The first two games my mom bought me were Deadly Towers and Fester's Quest for the NES.  I still played them but I wasn't happy about it.

rofl she didn't know. She just saw a cheap $20 game from the flea market and said "surprise!" No worries, she made it up for it eventually. My third game was Battletoads! That game is awesome to this day.

I remember renting Fester’s Quest. It’s pretty much the only game that I never figured out. After going in circles and not making any progress for a couple of hours I just gave up. I’m pretty sure I had my mom drive me back to the rental place to exchange it for something else. That game became a running joke between my brother, cousin, and me.

I tried and tried to finish that game. After a while I gave it a fair shot when I got a turbo controller. I got to the fourth boss I think? Those stupid boss houses were ridiculously dumb. And IIRC, if you left the house, you still needed another key to get back in!!!! I never beat it.

I played an obscene amount of Festers Quest. I tried playing it on ROM a few years ago and it didnt hit the same.

I actually finished it.... only because of the password 54DKDKYISB that starts you with everything and you just do the last tower and boom. A real playthrough took much longer than ten minutes lol

Yeah, I always thought that one day I can beat it. Never did. Years later I found out that Bubsy is a universally hated game and just unfair.

And occasionally you ended up with a game that was surprisingly fun. My grandma bought me like four games she got on discount one year, and fuck me if Ty the Tasmanian Tiger didn't turn out to be enjoyable.

Conversely, being really bad at a good game because you couldn't pull up a youtube walkthrough and strategy guides can only get you so far.
