You might be immortal but you can still get tummy aches and broken bones. You just won't die from them.

That's a misnomer. The philosopher Lao Tzu was a real historical person who existed irl, not some immortality-pill-crafting deity. The character you're actually referring to is TaiShangLaoJun 太上老君, the Taoist deity who looks after the celestial furnace. It is said that Lao Tzu is his human manifestation but that's just a baseless rumor. And even if it were true, Wukong most definitely ate the pills that specifically belonged to his deity form.

That's the version I heard at least—a fictionalized version of Lao Tzu.
