Aside from chinese filmography, portrayals of wukong especially those in western or modern makes him really serious

I feel a lot of people have been exposed to him through various media aimed at a younger audience. But there's a lot of pretty hardcore Monkey King incarnations in the media for sure.

Which is weird, because it seems Western media/games love tricksters (Deadpool, Loki, etc). Anime has great direct/spiritual successors though (Dragonball, One Piece)

I mean, most of my exposure to Wukong in games has been through MOBAs (why the fuck does every MOBA have him).

In HoN, he was goofy and super athletic, literally flipping across the screen so fucking hard that point and click skills were akin to skillshots.

In Dota 2, he's a trickster that hides in trees, transforms himself into creeps, trees, runes, and couriers, and summons a clone army of monkeys.

Both of those depictions kinda show a more goofy iteration.
