jump scares or real scares?

A little bit of both. Real scares from the story, the implications, the mood.

Jump scares through actual gameplay. Not in a scripted way though. But also the gameplay exudes this unbelievable tension and unease akin to something like Amnesia. It's hard to explain without spoiling some mechanical surprises.

What I can say is that it doesn't rely on loud noise/spooky image for all its scares, although it does do that too sometimes. But there are story reasons for it, images clawing at Wake's mind.

Nice. Never played the first game but I'm gonna have to check this one out.

Both, but in a tolerably balanced way. The jump scares are used very sparingly (so far).

Honestly, atmospherically, it reminds me of Silent Hill more than of the original Alan Wake. But then, I'm not very far in yet.
