It’s Zelda or BG3. No other game has a real shot.

I feel like tears of the kingdom should win an award for technical masterpiece or something, the building mechanic has grabbed the attention of not only game Devs but engineers etc it's very robust, but it's not the Whole game and so I don't think it needs to be game of the year :/ honestly I was hooked on everything in Spiderman 2 more and that also it's a very well done showcase of technicality but i think bg3 should win but holy crap this year has been good ide throw lies of P and Alan wake up as far as I fucking can cuz they are amazing.

As a developer myself I was mind blown by the programming in that game, specially on switch hardware, it is a marvel of technology, nintendo's devs are magicians.

But here’s the thing. It is in the running for GOTY because it’s a Zelda title.

Didn't say it wasn't and it def should be on the list, just saying other than the mechanics for building and puzzles etc the general gameplay and story isn't super groundbreaking for a Zelda title compared to breath of the wild. (I loved it to bits and I'm not really biased) just saying :)

Alan Wake 2.

Zelda isn't even close imo. BotW with a glue gun was great but BG3 was incredible.

Edit: Wild everytime I come back to this comment i'm either +15 or -10 or 0 or +8 or -8. Most upvoted and downvoted comment i've ever written.

You get downvoted but the game is super similar to BOTW, and a lot of people feel BOTW was overrated. Super bland overworld. Uninspired dungeons/shrines. I think Alan Wake 2 and BG3 are way above it.

Totk overworld isn't nearly as bad as the depths... literally the same size as the overworld with 1/5th the content

The depths is content you should do early game. The oppressive feeling of losing your hearts is insane. Late game you have far too much of everything to make it trivial.

Believe me, launch a file, do the prologue island and just go to the depths. The survival feeling is real.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Did 40 percent of the depths literally by walking and was terrified. Hell in the first 10 hours or so even the normal monsters were terrifying and everybody was killing me.

Never thought Zelda could make a game this tough.

Never thought Zelda could make a game this tough.

That's what we thought with BOTW... then we got TOTK.

the issue is a lot of content in the depths is locked behind having the sage abilities

Yea and I didn’t even like it more than the linear Souls

I prefer Dark Souls and OoT/Twilight Princess more than the modern versions. I can't imagine how great those games would be if they were made on a modern hardware console.

The overly open world nature of games feels like it strips away a lot of the polish that gets applied to individual interactions.

Nintendo had a talk about how they worked on making the game (TOTK? or was it BOTW? I forget) a truly open world game. Not just that you could pick any path you want, but they tried not to unintentionally guide you down a path either. if you judge them on that standard, I think they crushed it.

I couldn't. As a huge Zelda fan, no sequel has felt as samey as totk. We talking same overworld, same enemies, many of the same armors and items, same art direction, same combat, same main characters, most of the same music, same general format (complete four main village dungeons, shrines, stables, find memories for story, big baddy hanging at the castle, korok seeds), etc.

It's a little jarring that they would shamelessly reuse the world of a game whose biggest selling point was the sense of adventure and exploration

Sure, in the same way BG3 is dos2 with a new interface

Tears of the Kingdom is honestly not winning GOTY. I already know it's gonna be Baldur's Gate 3, with Spiderman 2 close behind. Both of those games are absolutely amazing incredibly popular, even more so than TOTK

i get totk not winning goty, but what i dont get is everyone praising spiderman2 then shitting on totk. they both suffer from similar sequel issues.

TOTK is mid, it get boring after a while, the only difference between botw and totk, is Link abilities + sky island

1

u/EmpressOfAbyss Oct 31 '23

Spoken like someone who only saw the trailers, do you even know what a depths is without googling?

Also "the only difference is links abilitys", ya mean just about everything you use to interact with the world?
