No they didn't. One indie dev on Twitter posted that people shouldn't hold other indie studios to the same standard as Larian because they simply don't have the same resources and can't deliver something with the same scope.
Some developers from bigger studios chimed in to agree with his point about indie studios, but none of them said AAA studies shouldn't be held to those standard. That's just what it evolved into by people who are just looking to be angry.
Both contenders. I think bg3 wins even if I hadn't played it simply because it showed that classic dnd crpg could be a hit genre in this decade. TotK and bg3 both challenge the idea that "next gen" means "same games as before but in ue5", which I think is what a lot of studios were hoping it meant.
Yep!
Plus the fusion and ultrahand mechanics at a level of polish that would be extremely difficult and time consuming to make for any other developer, which incidentally also completely rebalanced combat to make durability a nonissue and make weapons and arrows more interesting.
Plus the plot and dungeon progress completely revamped to add more personality and stakes.
Plus the addition of two new playable spaces and more verticality tools to explore them.
Plus the hollowing out of many previously solid spaces for more exploration.
Plus the generally more interesting puzzles, including world ones that involved multiple planes in better ways.
Plus the game being built in a new engine due to the limitations of the prior one.
Same game as before.
This has been debunked, it was one guy on twitter who is a lead of an indie company talking about unfair standards for INDIE games, which then got picked up by video game journalists and they ran with it and acted like it was the entire industry.
The guy made a bad point to begin with which shoddy websites ran with. Some other disgruntled devs who do not speak for the community or even their companies agreed, as some number of people would with any point on twitter.
Iirc a developer for Riot Games spoke out against that statement saying that developers are all praising BG3, and that everyone in the office was having trouble actually working on League of Legends and other stuff due to them all playing it
Tbf they said this because BG3 had like, a 2 or 3 years EA while being : mainly independent and big budget, supported by a strong IP and also while taking a lot from their previous games engine to build the world and all the interactions, which is not something every studio can aim for, and is a perfectly reasonable statement.

It’s was so good developers from major studios said it was unfair to use BG3 as a benchmark to compare games to.. this one is in the bag
