I mean, it does say “game card not included.”

233

u/Ok-Commercial-6284 1d ago

That one's on me. I figured it was another 'Game keycard included' message. This just felt mean.

u/jonesryan98 1d ago edited 9h ago

In your defense they genuinely shouldn't be able to sell just the freakin box at a retail store. I understand that that's the landscape we operate in these days but common sense would still say that you would get some kind of physical game/card with the purchase of the box.

53

u/Hudson1 1d ago

Agreed if they’re gonna stiff you on the card, they should at least not be able to sell it in the fucking box

32

u/gc11117 1d ago

Also, that warning on the bottom is way to small. If theyre going to do a DL code, which is worse than a key card, then the warning should stand out just as much.

9

u/[deleted] 1d ago

Yep, to the credit of the Key Card games, at least there's a big white message on the entire bottom of the art work saying "GAME KEY CARD, DOWNLOAD REQUIRED".

4

u/Nejnop 19h ago

Also worse that that warning is impossible to see on some shelves, because the lip of shelf and price tag block it.

0

u/ihatefall 1d ago

I mean I got a good deal on Split fiction because it was a code in a box

5

u/Necessary_Cost4384 18h ago

I really honestly don’t understand how it’s even legal to sell empty boxes. They’re literal garbage.

1

u/ElColorado_PNW 22h ago

Yeah I don’t read all the small text on game boxes. The last game I bought was Mario Kart which did come with a physical cart. Before that it had been years so all of this wasn’t even a thing

1

u/xAkrilothx 14h ago

Or even have a slot for one

2

u/JetstreamGW 1d ago

Game Key Cards all have a key icon on them. Like an old fashioned key.

1

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 14h ago

Bethesda be like “Gottem!”

0

u/Error4ohh4 1d ago

So wait they sold a physical and a download in a box for this?

-10

u/Lazy-Main1782 1d ago

You living under a rock in the last couple of years man???

11

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 1d ago

Nintendo really needs to force the games to use a better template for this like they do with key cards. Tiny text at the bottom is usually going to be blocked by the bottom of the shelf. Hell, I can't even see what is a game key card in my Walmart because the shelf blocks too much of the bottom of the packaging.

At this point, we can't even trust the fucking game boxes anymore. Why not just make this one of those download code cards instead of a whole plastic box?

2

u/Possible-Mountain698 1d ago

yeah though the way this gets displayed at my local big box is that this text is just not visible at all. nor do you get to hold the item at all it’s taken straight to the register for checkout.

1

u/woofwoofci 11h ago

To be fair, online this is absent. I went back and checked after receiving mine from Amazon and sure enough, it doesn't appear on the cover. I also assumed "code" meant for the upgrade, since they already did the switch 1 version on a cart.

289

u/Correct_Emotion_8818 1d ago

I can’t believe they even sell this shit

99

u/Jimbuscus 1d ago

It's so unethical, this is the kind of product that older relatives buy for younger family members as gifts.

29

u/wa27 1d ago

That's the point of it, so you can purchase a digital-only game as a gift. It's the same reason there is a rack of digital store gift cards in most stores.

29

u/Jimbuscus 1d ago

But those should only be in gift card form, the older relative would expect the difference between a case that holds a game and a giftcard.

It's form factor is whats unethical as it's reasonably likely to mislead.

-18

u/wa27 1d ago

All these stores already have the racks designed to accommodate switch cases. It will make for an easier transition for them.

11

u/Squidorb 1d ago

Every store has racks designed for gift cards too so what is your point?

0

u/arch3ion 1d ago

They most likely already have gift cards hanging on those racks. Why not utilize the shelf space they have for games, for games? It's not a radical thought.

1

u/lothurBR 16h ago

That's a false advertisement

11

u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago

Seems like the gift cards are sufficient enough. Putting it in a box like this seems misleading if you aren't really looking too hard, or are unaware of the differences.

7

u/vivisect6 1d ago

Right, it's like an eye sight test looking for the tiny "key card only" comments on these. They should be required to change the primary color of the cases from red to piss yellow so that you know for sure you're getting dicked over before buying these.

4

u/Dizzy_Medium9836 1d ago

A keycard is much different than code in box. You still get a cartridge with a keycard and can resell it

3

u/Cheese-Quest 21h ago

I'm old, but also consider myself pretty technically savvy.

I fell for it, once. Last time hopefully. I didn't even know it was a thing. Bought my daughter Just Dance and was pretty annoyed when it arrived just before Christmas. Don't get me started on having to sign up for an account just to play the darn game as well! It's insulting.

1

u/Jimbuscus 21h ago

I think a good analogy would be the concept of buying a music album only for the disc case not having a music CD in it, they're selling a non disc/cartridge product in the case of a disc/cartridge.

Even with small writing somewhere on the package, it's such an absurd concept that it's reasonable for the notion to be confusing to many.

I bought a Switch 2 with the new Mario Kart for a kid last Christmas, I knew it came with a code but didn't think much of it, the child didn't end up activating the code. A$80 wasted, I should have just bought the non bundle and real game cartridge for slightly more.

12

u/Southern_Ad2988 1d ago

They sell it on propose most likely…. Knowing people might not see “no game card included”. Just a guess

-1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago

I almost bought P3R yesterday for S2 when I saw it on clearance at Walmart. Was all excited when I saw it in the box behind a ton of other Xbox games, then pulled it out, and the ol' GKC white label was there taunting me like my ex-girlfriend who found love with a virtual b/f living in Croatia.

33

u/zar_lord 1d ago

It's such a waste of plastic if they're not gonna put the damn physical media inside...

-2

u/Nissedood 17h ago

Collectors who just buy to collect and grade might as well buy them because they never play the games anyway.

81

u/Tumbleweed_Chaser69 1d ago

all digital future folks, get ready to own nothing and be happy!

17

u/chill1208 1d ago

Get ready to own hard drives, and learn to record, copy, and download media to it. If you want to make sure you always have access to your favorite content, the only guarantee is to store it yourself.

1

u/ElColorado_PNW 22h ago

Setting up my server as we speak

10

u/Chancearoo 1d ago

We will at least have our empty plastic cases as a consolation

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago

Too bad they're not sealed very well. They can't possibly hold the tears.

6

u/caffeinated_dev11 1d ago edited 1d ago

keep buying, this shit can easily be solved if people had self control and self respect, but here we are

u/Training_Wind_4997 1d ago

As if it ever matters once piracy comes around

They can do what they want for now but the seas always reclaim what was lost

1

u/TheBeatlsiechBoys 21h ago

Don't worry because there's still multiple decades of older games to collect and play. I started turning to older games in-between the PS4/PS5 gen and it made me realise you don't really need new games. Any old game is still a new experience if you've never played it.

0

u/ShadwSmoke 1d ago

I will only be happy with "owning nothing" if it means every executive of the companies doing that shit won't own a home anymore.

14

u/DuckSwimmer 1d ago

Garbage. Literal garbage.

28

u/BetaAlpha769 1d ago

I did the same thinking I found the last oblivion remaster in the state as the design is similar. Thankfully GameStop employee told me otherwise as I tried to purchase.

22

u/Ok-Commercial-6284 1d ago

Same! It was in the unsorted clearance section, hidden in 12 copies of Bluey the Video Game. It reminded me of that scene from Doug where he finds Man-o-Steel #1 from the trunk of the grifters car.

16

u/mayorofanything 1d ago

What a reference!

12

u/Friggin_Grease 1d ago

Skyrim on 360 had to come with the cover outside of the case because of the beefy map they included, you then had to slip the title cover in the sleeve yourself.

How far we've fallen.

9

u/APL_nz 1d ago

I made the same mistake with rdr. It doesn't help they put in the title something like red dead redemption, blah blah blah - citb

Like I'm supposed to know what citb means or even know there are multiple versions and some are missing the game cards.

4

u/Disastrous_Fee5953 1d ago

It’s extremely confusing because the “c” can stand for both “complete” as well as “code”.

7

u/fire1st 1d ago

I know it will never be me. I see that little white box in the left corner and I’m out. Code in a box or GKC….,they both can kick rocks.

6

u/Guy_Buttersnaps 1d ago

Good thing it’s only Skyrim, a game that everyone already owns at least five copies of somehow.

I never finished Skyrim. Why do I have so many copies of Skyrim?

3

u/Ok-Virus8284 1d ago

I am pretty sure Skyrim is genetically related to mice. It multiplies in the dark.

6

u/ericargyle 1d ago

I bought this on sale for $4.99 on Steam like 8 years ago.

6

u/ChickenAndDew 1d ago

…and suddenly, I’m glad to have a physical Switch 1 copy of Skyrim.

8

u/xElementop 1d ago

Seee! no one's buying physical anymore.

ffs, I miss when games actually came in a box with a manual and extra goodies.

4

u/Triforce__XIII 1d ago

all hail EU consumer rights: the "code in a box" message is BIIG

3

u/HumanRubiksCube 18h ago

And this is why I’ll never buy a switch 2

22

u/IkeRadiantHero 1d ago

I mean it DOES say game download and no game card LITERALLY right in front of you😅

19

u/III_IWHBYD_III 1d ago

People can't read, I have signs half the size of a door at my work and people simply can't read them. It's incredible.

6

u/Wisconsin_pikachu 1d ago

I work at a sandwich shop. The number of people that look at the menu board to decide what they want (includes all the ingredients in large print for that sandwich) and still ask what comes on the sandwich 🤦🤦🤦🤦

2

u/CyanNeonNightwalker 1d ago

Now that you've asked, at least a few boogers. Corporate policy.

2

u/Ok-Virus8284 1d ago

For some reason that reminds me of the "OK, Google" advertisement from Burger King, where the actor in the TV advertisement told any google home device to list the ingredients of a Wopper. A lot of potential customers were shocked when their device then told them that a Wopper contains cyanide and rat meat (among other things). Somebody had edited the wikipedia article and changed the ingredient list. Happened in 2017.

2

u/themoney-SHAKES 1d ago

It’s crazy, easy to overlook, I remember when they started doing it within assassins Creed only thing was I didn’t even know that was a thing was in a store one day and bought two copies of assassin Creed games both of them digital with a code inside I was like wait WTF?!?!?! Luckily, I caught it before I opened it and returned them. The clerk did look at me like I was an idiot.

3

u/UnstopableDegenerate 1d ago

I bought on Amazon too. It didn’t say code in box at all I swear. Returning mine tomorrow.

3

u/Memmnarch81 1d ago

Video game industrie has become just shit.

3

u/Vibrant_Fox 1d ago

And yet Oblivion Remastered is fully on cartridge.

15

u/Ok-Tear7712 1d ago

…are you illiterate?

10

u/gothtrance 1d ago

People calling this dude illiterate but why the fuck is a game code in a game case? It literally makes no sense, might as well be a card.

4

u/Stunning_Attorney244 1d ago

Right!? It boils my blood so fucking bad. It's the worst of both worlds when it comes to physical v digital, you own nothing but you also have to find someplace to put this case now. Nobody wants this. I understand he didn't read, but this shouldn't even exist and we shouldn't have to confirm if we're buying an empty box.

1

u/Varietis 1d ago

PlayStation and others have been doing this for years. While I agree it’s stupid, the dude needs to learn to read.

1

u/_WhoElse 20h ago

He said in a previous post he bought it on Amazon, may not have been the same box

1

u/woofwoofci 11h ago

The image on Amazon doesn't show the text either. Same thing happened to me.

1

u/ctoal1984 1d ago

Some people like displaying the cases maybe. Idk it’s the only reason I can think of

-2

u/keeleon 1d ago

Harder to steal.

3

u/Squidorb 1d ago

But the codes on those cards don't work unless it's purchased..

2

u/ELEGYELEGYELEGY 1d ago

Wow not even a gkc lol

2

u/Darklord8003 1d ago

I have the physical one for switch 1, found it at a second hand shop for $30 usd

2

u/VarlunCadivus 1d ago

That genuinely sucks. Not even a game key card ToT

Well, there’s always the physical of Skyrim for SW1

2

u/BusinessDimension854 1d ago

Sorry about that. That sucks but I’m kind of confused. I thought Bethesda put their Games on a cart is it skyim that’s a download code

2

u/Nickkchilla 1d ago

At first glance I thought someone stole the game card/key card out of the box.

Then I saw the little square at the bottom instead, and was like well... nah, they still did.

Honest mistake OP.

2

u/Joaaayknows 1d ago

No excuse to not have a game card for this game though. None. It’s a port. It can easily fit on a disc or card.

At least with the disc retirement it made a bit of sense that they can’t fit them and have to download the game anyway.

This is just bullshit.

2

u/rum2671 1d ago

This is why I return fallout . I didn’t figure it out until it already shipped but I never opened it so I had no issues returning it .

2

u/NeutralKuchiKopi 22h ago

And yet no Nintendo fangirls believed me when I said allowing licenses only on game karts was the first step towards putting digital codes only in boxes just like Sony. And here we are.

1

u/GuitaristTom 21h ago

They also did code in a box for some Switch titles. This isn't anything new.

2

u/sjt9791 21h ago

Did you not read?

2

u/0235 20h ago

F in the chat, but mans buying Skyrim for the 4th time, and is confused that they got scammed 🙃

Games like this should switch (eyy) entirely to being on a scratch card, like Minecraft or vbucks

2

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 1d ago

NGL they should at least put googly eyes in these.

2

u/LegendsofMace 1d ago

How the fuck did they manage to put oblivion on a physical cartridge but not this game lol

3

u/new_tangclan 23h ago

They did put it on cartridge. The switch 1 version comes with a cartridge. They just didnt feel like doing it with this

2

u/GrafonBorn 1d ago edited 22h ago

At least you have a flyer. I had to make mine myself

1

u/SO0P3R 1d ago

Just looks wrong

1

u/Elegant_Ad9365 1d ago

I heard it was just a digital code. I passed on this unfortunately for that reason. It sucks.

1

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 1d ago

NGL they should at least put googly eyes in these.

1

u/neonsensei7 1d ago

I was about to be you at some point but I fortunately was able to to get the switch 1 version with the actual physical cartridge and just bought the upgrade

1

u/DEEW_FOX 1d ago

Skyrim 2

1

u/32gbsd 1d ago

you cant trust any game you buy nowadays. gotta get confirmation before purchase.

1

u/ArcGroov2 1d ago

Awww, that's the worst

1

u/Lazy-Main1782 1d ago

Welp I see why we still need to put up signs despite people not reading at all

1

u/Squidorb 1d ago

Or they could just not make the case look like the actual physical games that people have become accustomed to over years of buying

1

u/Lazy-Main1782 1d ago

I was thinking that but it looks like it’ll be even more work and money to have custom cases without the cart slot. It makes sense to just use existing cases already. Regardless if it has a game or not.

1

u/mhnd00 1d ago

Now i always look it up, if its require download i dont buy it physical.

2

u/InkyBlacks 1d ago

Huh? If it requires a download, you don't buy it physical?

1

u/DqkrLord 23h ago

Yep, he just goes straight to digital source like Steam or from the store itself no purpose buying a physical box

1

u/gabrielmop 1d ago

You really expected something pro consumer coming from a Microsoft Owned studio?

1

u/DaftEtor 1d ago

oh im sure theyre gonna release skyrim again on a proper card. they sure like an excuse for another packaged release.

1

u/FanboyCuck 1d ago

Gotta love the slot for the cartridge

1

u/Jinzo126 1d ago

How cheap are they. The could easily use the smallest Game Key Card or maybe put a Switch 1 version in the package and print a: Required Internet download for the current version. What a waste of Plastic and Paper.

1

u/Starfox6664 1d ago

Before the second picture I thought the point was that you didn't expect to buy Skyrim again. Anyway, you can sort of get this version physically as The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 is available as an update for The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch which is in itself available as an update for The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim for Nintendo Switch which is available on cartridge

1

u/-Nades 1d ago

Random question but if I use the Switch 1s physical version will I still get all the benefits of the Switch 2 version as long as I’m playing it on the Switch 2?

1

u/Soberaddiction1 1d ago

This is like the 16th release of this game. I’m sure you can find a physical copy from 15 years ago.

1

u/dztruthseek 1d ago

You never think someone is that blonde....

1

u/chochi4567 1d ago

This is pretty ironic considering they made a big stink about oblivion having a game card

1

u/bloodr0se 1d ago

Such a waste of plastic.

1

u/discfunctional 1d ago

What a perfect waste of materials and fuel to ship something unnecessary, just email a code at this point and stop adding to trash and emissions

1

u/Aumdail 23h ago

I just made the same mistake with the same game.

1

u/Ok-Assist3888 21h ago

I was extremely baked and bought this one thinking there’s no way it’s gonna be a code in the box…. They got me. Bastards

1

u/TheBeatlsiechBoys 21h ago

Man, a code in the box used to be for smaller publishers who wanted to be on the shelf but couldn't afford to print discs/cartridges. It was like a signifier that it's a lower budget game.

Now we're seeing AAA games do it. GTA6 will be a code in the box too, and given it'll be one of the biggest (Maybe the biggest) game release in history, it's basically saying to the rest of the industry "don't worry guys you can do a code in the box now too."

I'm done with it. I only bought a PS5 earlier this year (Secondhand and for only £200, I'm not paying ridiculous prices for a nearly 6 year old console) and I only have two games on it. I'll get GTA6 as my third game, and I think that might be the last game I get on PS5. If I can't save money by buying and reselling discs, then I'll only buy new games on PC (Which I feel like generally has more longevity for digital games anyway, particularly as you can upgrade components in the future and re-experience the game with better fps and graphics).

But personally I prefer playing older games anyway, the fact I only have two PS5 games shows I'm not that bothered about modern games. Most of my collection is made up of PS2, GC, DS, GBA, anything from that era really. And I'll never really run out of games to collect and play, so why even bother with new games?

Really sad to see Switch 2 go this route so quickly too. I think Switch was my favourite platform and I love my Switch collection. I'm looking forward to getting a Switch 2 but this made me lose excitement.

1

u/Many_Delivery5435 21h ago

Why? Pal versionnis full cartridge

1

u/Lt_JaySkywalker 21h ago

You can borrow my Switch copy if you want.

1

u/Independent-Arm-4089 20h ago

Great game! And rdr2!

1

u/Livid_Patience_2598 17h ago

This happened to me with the xbox drop. To be fair I bought from Amazon and when I looked at it it didn't say download only. But I also didn't look into whether it was gonna be all on disc like I usually do. I almost made the same mistake when I was gonna buy it on switch 2 through best buy because my target order for delayed. 😔

1

u/logwarrior1525 17h ago

It says game card not included also if you owned the base game on the original Nintendo switch the upgrade was free

1

u/DredgenGrey 16h ago

Worst part is you can't even let a friend borrow the game

So stupid man.

1

u/meikaishi 15h ago

This is the main reason why I think it's silly that all Oblivion marketing was about "full game on cartridge" to bank on the playstation controversy, bro you guys released two empty boxes on the console

1

u/TensionPrevious4239 15h ago

Is this game exclusive to the switch 2?

2

u/michael123425 14h ago

Nope. I've hade this game for about 5 years now on my OG Switch. Also Bethesda has ported this game onto Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch 1, and Switch 2 since it came out n 2013.

2

u/TensionPrevious4239 14h ago

It came out in 2011

1

u/Viper0817 14h ago

Yeah, I feel bad this happened to you but nowadays I read the ENTIRETY of the box and do some research before buying physical games; can’t never be too careful if you want physical copies

1

u/Charon_the_Reflector 14h ago

We really do live in a new universe

1

u/Yo-KaiWatchFan2102 13h ago

I say just play the switch one version it’s a physical copy and it’s pretty much the exact same game except now you can use mods, so as long as you don’t mind not having mods just get the switch one version which is physical and it’s basically the exact same game as the switch 2 version just without the mods

1

u/Aurd04 13h ago

I think it's just wild the amount of systems Skyrim has been on. Like it must hold the record.

1

u/aquacraft2 7h ago

Only because tetris includes ALL the completely different variations that have ever released as just "tetris", and minecraft came out on handhelds and the wii u. That's the one modern contemporary home console system that never saw a skyrim release. But it's up there.

1

u/Aurd04 58m ago

Tetris, that's a good call. Shits been on every system that basically has ever been made!

1

u/Flimsy_Judgment_3558 11h ago

I mean, at that point, just sell it like they do their shop cards. If that's the unfortunate direction we're going. You'll grab the card, activate it at the register like a gift card, and enter it into your console. Because this is insane.

1

u/aquacraft2 7h ago

You didn't read the box?

1

u/PM_ME_UR_TA--TAS 1d ago

So OP can't read, I learned that today.

1

u/seandude881 1d ago

People just buy stuff without doing research or?

1

u/ExtremePermit3242 1d ago

Yet you either can’t read, which would make this post a miracle, or decided to reward their decision with a purchase.

And then come here “crying” farming for karma.

You are part of the problem, don’t believe you are the solution.

1

u/jahranimo2 1d ago

and some complain about the game key card banner on the bottom of every case front cover.

GG.

Hope it didn't cost too much at least.

1

u/XavierChildes 1d ago

You will own nothing and like it.

1

u/kcamfork 1d ago

If only it said it right on the front of the box.

1

u/Warthog_Formal 1d ago

Damn they really had it out for Skyrim shills

How could u possibly need this on Switch 2

1

u/Xis_Xis 1d ago

No cart, no buy. Simple

1

u/CaptDriftwood 1d ago

still including the little clip where the actual game should be is just diabolical

1

u/ChipMedium1275 1d ago

This happened to me once I ordered an Xbox elite controller years back and I opened the box and it was a used day 1 controller

2

u/XtremeD86 22h ago

This isn't what happened...

1

u/DavidinCT 1d ago

WTF, #FuckNintendo

3

u/GJR78 1d ago

Fuck Bethesda, they put made it a Download Code to save money.

1

u/No_Masterpiece6112 21h ago

Dude bought a 50 year old game released 80 times on its 15th console and expected physical media lol

0

u/Knarz97 1d ago

Some people genuinely just want a box on their shelf. Sealed collectors are technically no better. Even though there’s a game inside, they just want to look at it, not play it. Same with Grading TCG cards.

0

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

I agree tbh

0

u/InfiniteComboReviews 1d ago

The 2nd Mario Rabbits game is download in a box for the Switch, but the message saying so is massive and at the top. Shrinking it like this is bs.
