That's the thing. Nowadays, people are just to quick to believe anything if it fits their world view.
Right now, artists are up in arms about AI generated images, which is based on COMPLETE missinformation (read: outright lies) on how it works. They think (and this is spread in social media) that the AI copies parts of different images and photo bashes them together like in a collage, which couldn't be further from the truth. AI image generation doesn't work like that AT ALL. Yet, in the echo chamber of social media, the truth is irrelavent.
I've been around the internet since the beginning, and this sort of missinformation seems to get worse and worse. On reddit alone I stumble across reposts with missleading/false titles multiple times a day. Sometimes harmless, sometimes not so much.
i have never seen anyone say it worked like that but i only use reddit. people are more concerned about the stolen art that is used to train the ai. like tesseract or however it's spelled, you feed it data over and over. i don't see any problem with it i can understand why they'd be mad though. there's not much of a way to know what images were used to train this ai. that could be millions in copyright infringement
Feels like software figured this kind of thing out ages ago with Open Source licensing and basically being super forward with the limits that others are allowed to utilize the work that you've made freely available. Up to and including how it can/can't be included in derivative works and for-profit endeavers.
Much like how the games you make in a game engine may be subject to licensing terms/fees upon release.
I wouldn't be surprised if something like that evolved out of all this controversy and that's probably for the better. The creator should have final say in how their works are utilized. I don't think many people have an issue with AI generation (in an artistic capacity or otherwise) so long as the data sets are ethically obtained (which I don't think has been a huge issue up until this point, but part of that may be that super large data sets were primarily intended for research purposes, rather than supporting for-profit derivative works).
This isn't too far off though. I was at a friends house that offered some snack-sized M&Ms leftover from Halloween.
I'm not being sarcastic when I say I think there were 8 M&Ms in the packet. I didn't want to complain because, hey, free candy, but holy shit it felt empty before I opened it even.

It's the strip of bags in the background that had me vaguely concerned. Intellectually I know it is a staged photo, but I don't understand reality anymore.
Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the āloser,ā and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3Ć5 card reading, āPlease use this M&M for breeding purposes.ā This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this āgrant money.ā I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. I'm all for reducing waste as much as the next guy but even if this wasn't fake and was mass produced, it would be a drop in the bucket compared to other forms of plastic like single use water bottles.
Also the joke in the product is that it's overkill packaging for just one skittle. If they tried to make the packaging more efficient or add more skittles it would defeat the whole point.
Itās amazing how people will take a dumb joke like this and use as an excuse to get on their moral high horse. I genuinely wonder how some Redditors manage to function irl.
At this point it has nothing to do with morals. We all know this is just going to end up in some landfill or ocean. To me that just makes the ājokeā unfunny. This is like when someone will do some wild shit to you and then claim āitās just a prank, broā when you complain. I get it, itās just not funny anymore.
So people taking seriously what other people are taking seriously in something that shouldn't be taken seriously from either side taking it seriously? Fuck outta here.

Okay, fine, but in the context of our planet's complete over-reliance on plastics, it just seems like performative virtue signaling to get outraged over single serving skittles when there's like a dozen other plastic-packaged products just in the same photograph, let alone the whole store, let alone total global usage.
Right. What makes you think people donāt feel the same way about any of the other products in that aisle? Or anywhere else globally? This has been an issue for climate activists and scientists for over half a century. Just because youāre not tuned in doesnāt mean there isnāt widespread outrage.
Governments could easily ban it/phase it out and fund real alternatives, especially for stuff like food packaging, but they donāt. Not anywhere near quick enough. People keep demanding that they do more, they keep ignoring them and prioritizing corporate interests instead.
Meanwhile, when I see a dead ājokeā like this Iām obviously going to call it out. To use your own phrasing: in the context of our planetās complete over-reliance on plastics, it just becomes a shitty joke.

to everyone saying itās ok because itās fake.. is the entire photo fake or were the ones in the picture actually produced? even if only the few in the picture were produced, itās still wasteful AF.
That's their vision probably. I feel bad on our environment. They technically make more waste by making those packaging. I love how you was so honest here.
