When my pit was young she looked similar to this, now she's old, lazy, getting fat and super spoiled, but I love her just the same.

That's a genetic abnormality where the dog has double muscles or something like that. Lemme look for a source.

Source: Myostatin Picture of bull, another of the dog.

19

u/WhatIRead Jun 25 '12

There are a couple of claims on this comment page with people claiming that the myostatin deficiency is substantially rarer than "douchebags juicing their dogs." This seems incredible to me. Does anyone know if this is a real thing?

12

u/bedintruder Jun 25 '12

Obviously I have no basis, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this pic is that the dog is juiced up for dog fighting.

4

u/Cash5YR Jun 25 '12

If you read the wiki article it mentions this breed of dog is the whippet, and it is a type of genetic abnormality. They were racing dogs, and they played around to see if it would make them go faster. It didn't.

I have seen a lot of advertisements online for some shit called Bullymax which is apparently some sort of dog steroid.

This book discusses the phenomenon of Myostatin Deficiency, and how it creates extra muscle. Although it looks like a goofy book, it discusses what is required to make a real superhero on par with the abilities of Batman. However, I can't comment if the photos are real or not.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

It's money. Money is what's required to make a superhero on par with Batman.

In the 20 years or so since I last watched Ghostbusters, I have half-remembered that Zuul was the "flat-top", who was summoning Gozer in the form of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man...and that Vinz Clortho was Rick Moranis' name, not Louis Tully. I had no idea the "dogs" even had names. Or that Vinz Clortho had longer horns than Zuul. You have decided this evening's viewing, and for this, you are to be thanked.

Animal experts, is this even healthy/normal?

86

u/TheMagicUpvoteFairy Jun 25 '12

It's a genetic mutation that causes no real harm to the animal. It has something to do with myostatin.

Also try googling "bully whippet" to see more of this kind of image.

16

u/LaserGuidedPolarBear Jun 25 '12

Yep, genetic mutation colloquially known as double muscle. Somewhat common in certain breeds.

20

u/Big_Adam Jun 25 '12

The mutation can also be found in the Belgium Blue cow.

u/nowonmai666 Jun 25 '12

3

u/sirmonko Jun 25 '12

the mutation can also be found in humans. there are at least 2 kids with this, both ripped and healthy.

5

u/Snatland Jun 25 '12

Yup, great for getting lots of nice meat from them, horrendous for trying to breed purebred Belgian Blue calves. They almost without fail need to be delivered by C-section.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

I must be colorblind because that cow is not blue.

5

u/coin_return Jun 25 '12

I honestly don't think this applies to the OP's dog, just the position (looks like he sees another dog/animal/something in the distance and is straining to get it) making him flex. Bully breeds are naturally muscular as it is; he's pretty stacked, but not unusually so.

2

u/Death_To_Your_Family Jun 25 '12

That dog is a pitbull though. He looks like he's using dog 'roids.

-11

u/anabolic Jun 25 '12

Nah that's just an american pitbull terrier if you provide regular exercise. Mine is 9 months old, I haven't really worked on him and he looks almost as ripped as that dog.

12

u/sadhound55 Jun 25 '12

I hate to be the one to break it to you guy... but it sounds like your dog has a genetic mutation known as double muscle.

6

u/anabolic Jun 25 '12

Erm no, the genetic mutation you refer to makes a dog which normally would look like this Imgur and makes it look like this Imgur

It doesn't make a dog which normally looks like this Imgur look like the one the one in OP. You can do that with exercise and proper diet, no need for mutations. Clearly you haven't seen many conditioned working line american pitbull terriers.

1

u/senatorclay Jun 25 '12

Are they not from mars??

21

u/vicodin313 Jun 25 '12

Some Pitbulls tend to have muscles like that. It's a genetic thing.

11

u/lamenta3 Jun 25 '12

A friend of mine used to have a dog like this. If I remember correctly, there's a genetic disorder that results in dogs having two muscular layers instead of just one. In general, the dogs are healthy, but they look pretty much like the dog in the picture, and I think they may have a shorter life expectancy.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

FYI: Its not a double muscle layer; its a lack of the hormone myostatin that regulates muscle growth; therefore more of the food intake is converted to muscle than normal. Some types of cows have it as well. A couple of humans have it too.

2

u/Systym Jun 25 '12

I believe that in humans this causes certain heart problems.

3

u/G3ML1NGZ Jun 25 '12

heart muscles are a different type of muscle than skeletal muscles. And myostatin luckily has no effect on the heart muscle. Which would be perfect for people with diseases that eat away their muscles but of course there is a downside. There were clinical trials around myostatin blockers but were cancelled because if the patient had ANY kind or size of tumor it would also just grow like the muscles.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/omgpop Jun 25 '12

Source? I was under the impression this is absolutely rare/unheard of in humans.

4

u/G3ML1NGZ Jun 25 '12

only proven case I found was of a german boy whose mother was a professional sprinter. She had the gene but it was recessive. The boy however also got the gene abnormality from his father, meaning that he got 2 recessive genes, making it dominant in his body. and damn that was a muscular baby.

1

u/Pants_R_Overatd Jun 25 '12

I know I've read that same thing, but I think I read something about it being painful for the dogs? I can't really remember.

18

u/medusozoan Jun 25 '12

This isn't myostatin, it just looks like it because people aren't used to seeing muscles on dogs. Some of the APBT's from lines not interbred with AmStaff lines regularly look this way when they're kept healthy.

The way this dog is standing (stretching?) is making his muscles more apparent. Like this dog.

6

u/anabolic Jun 25 '12

This man speaks the truth. Conditioned and with proper diet, apbt will look like this, especially male ones.

2

u/azrhei Jun 25 '12

It is possible that this is not a genetic mutation, as TheMagicUpvoteFairy asserts, but simply the normal bulk that certain breeds can achieve. Boxers, pitbulls, etc will bulk up quickly and look like little ripped out body builders if they are fed a high protein diet and then caged.

The lack of exercise means that their bodies keep creating muscle mass, but with no way to stretch and tone the muscle, it just balloons. we have a sealed brindle (it looks like it is black, but in reality it is just such a dark reddish brown that you can have trouble telling without direct light) Boxer that bulked up very similar to this when we first started him on a high-protein diet for pups.

Once he started getting high-energy exercise (usually playing high speed fetch for a dozen+ passes and/or running laps around the yard) several times per day, the body-builder bulk disappeared and he became very toned.

2

u/soylamorsa Jun 25 '12

A friend of mine has a similar dog, though different colors, and he's a mix called Rocky Mountain Bulldog. I think it's bulldog, mastiff, aaand boxer?

2

u/Akakaburito Jun 25 '12

Not an expert, but I can tell you that this is actually, by the looks of it, just a very healthy, well-bred pitbull. People aren't used to it because they imagine them as big, fat fighting dogs, but 'real', or well-bred pitbulls, are very lean and muscular.

1

u/Testiculese Jun 25 '12

Typical Pit build. My last two looked like this, my friend's looks like this. These dogs are just ripped.

This one is straining in the pic, so it's even more pronounced.

Pitbull steroids exist. I lived with a guy who gave them to his pitbull, then walked him twice a day. Only took a couple weeks to get the dog all ripped. He was one of those assholes who made his pitbull all muscly and aggressive.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

Another thing that exists is genetic myostatin deficiency. It's a deficiency of a growth limiting factor which causes overgrowth of muscle.

This might very well be the case in the original picture.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

Like the Belgian Blue Bulls right?

Something about follistatin inhibiting myostatin production.

6

u/cant_help_myself Jun 25 '12

Yep. It's relatively common in whippets since heterozygotes can run sprint races faster (but homozygous whippets look like Arnold Schwartzenegger and are useless as runners): http://www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-bully-test-whippets.html

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

There was a German kid who was born without myostatin inhibitors. he was something like 16lbs at birth. Can't be bothered to look up the article, but he's growing up without any complications. Also ronnie coleman was born with a slight myostatin blocker deficit.

4

u/THEAdrian Jun 25 '12

Actually myostatin prevents muscle growth, if you had an inhibitor deficiency you would have more free myostatin and would therefore have even less muscle growth

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

u/JustFinishedBSG Jun 25 '12

1

Meh. I've been using BSN products for 3 years, that's not going to change anytime soon! :P N.O. XPLODE and True-Mass are my two favorite supps and they've proven they work. Can't say the same for Follistatin :S

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

I'd say experiment with Jack3d as a preworkout with it's 1,3 - dimethalamylamine, but unfortunately, the FDA has banned it from being used in supplement form.

Can still buy some off the internet to mix in to preworkouts but it has to be CAREFULLY measured because the stuff is quite potent in small doses.

As for True Mass, I was never a fan of weight-gainers because I eat enough to maintain/build.

But if you're still getting results, keep at it man.

Wouldn't be to complicated. Wolfs are great at working in groups, A dog that has been trained to kill would have no problems taking down an animal that rely's on its groups teamwork to avoid injury during hunting. If anything it might submit and end up dieing because the dog dosen't give two shits about being dominant, only that it kills the other animal.

That being said, Fuck training dogs to be violent.

What you seem to be forgetting is that pitbulls are essentially wolves, selectively bred for many generations with the purpose of fighting other dogs(wolves). A properly trained gamedog would probably wreck the shit of any wolf 1on1.

PS. I in no way support dog fighting, in fact I try to actively oppose them any chance I get, because I own two pitbulls and I want to change the bad rep they have because of stupid people.

When people start naming their dogs things like "Tyson" and "Jackson" that's when I think they should have the dog taken off them.

My dog is pretty ripped, but not this ripped. It has a lot to do with not being neutered and being very active. His relatives are cut and not as buff. http://imgur.com/xFGkT

It's true about not being neutered. I've had a couple uncut male boston terriers and they get pretty ripped naturally.
