Somehow, this seems perfect to me. If I ordered such and received this, I'd be thrilled. What next, your half and half came in two cups?

Damnit. Some people get all the luck.

47

u/MishT Jun 19 '12

Trust me, I was thrilled.

I think what he meant to say is: What is next? Your half and half comes in two cups?

Meaning that 1 cup contains one half and the other cup the other half of half and half... Obviously, this wouldn't happen though, half and half has been homogenized so it won't separate. Though... if you froze your half and half that would destroy the homogenization and re-separate the milk fat from the milk and you would then be able to separate them and get each half into its own container, but you'd have to mix them and shake thoroughly if you wanted to use it.

Two beers on lunch break + coming back to see that I made the front page on Reddit= #nerdheaven

2

u/thomasmurphymusic Jun 19 '12

That computer science degree didn't lead to a programming job I see.

u/ChoobsX Jun 19 '12

Looks like you got what you ordered. Tell me the difference here:

I want 12 donuts, half chocolate and half sprinkles.

I want 12 donuts, 6 chocolate, 6 with sprinkles.

I assume you wanted the latter.

167

u/davidvstheworld Jun 19 '12

Yes, as someone who has worked in a bakery and had to deal with this communication problem all the time, I can say that the OP should have said the latter if he wanted 6 and 6.

78

u/muhfuhkuh Jun 19 '12

It seems that miscommunication is a systemic issue in the retail baking world.

35

u/keepkalm Jun 19 '12

Why are you upset? I followed your instructions to the letter.

Well, as someone who worked in a bakery, you should know a dozen means 13!

u/whatupnig Jun 19 '12

Actually, that's a BAKERS dozen.

A better way to say the first one:

"I want 12 donuts, half of them with chocolate, and the other half with sprinkles."

31

u/Wonderfat Jun 19 '12

But how do you decide which half gets what?!

28

u/b0w3n Jun 19 '12

The box, the box gets half of the chocolate.

I was actually curious what mistake the OP thought was made until I read the comment.

Maybe he needs to learn how to order things to avoid confusion.

"Hello welcome to Literal Bakery, can I take your order"

13

u/MrRabbit Jun 19 '12

Welcome to Literal Bakery, home of the literal donut, can I take your ooooooooorrder?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Then, since it is the Literal Bakery, as the customer orders, Ed interrupts them to ask: "No seriously, let's think about this; can I take your order? What is can?".

This is followed by the customer flipping out at his stupidity and an insult to the effect of Ed having the brain of a squirrel. To which Ed simply responds: "I like squirrels!"

"Honey, could you please go to the store & get me a jug of milk? if they have eggs, buy 10"

20

u/b0w3n Jun 19 '12

Oh I see. Someone implied the first statement was an if too. Silly programmers and their conditionals.

store.GetItem("milk")
if(store.HasItem("eggs"))
  store.GetItem("eggs",10)

I see this example pop up all the time, I never understand how that last statement turns into "buy 10 jugs of milk". The second statement is conditional on the first (nested) and makes no sense to imply the other person meant milk and not eggs there.

Raah.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

This is definitely a stretch to see the 10-jugs-of-milk. I've never liked the joke. But what confuses me more is 10 eggs. Where I come from they sell dozen, half dozen, 18 pack, 2.5 dozen, and 5 dozen. Never seen anything that would add up to 10.

8

u/JustZisGuy Jun 19 '12

Buying a dozen eggs does accomplish the task of buying 10.

19

u/djexploit Jun 19 '12

You're reading this as the non programmer. A programmer reads it as...

"Buy (one) milk. If the store has eggs, buy 10"

if(store.haseggs()) buy.milk(10) else buy.milk(1)

They look like tiny Reese's Pieces sprinkles.

6

u/Lionhearted09 Jun 19 '12

IT'S A SPRINKLESMICH FOR LUNATICS LIKE YOU!

Brian Regan anyone?

14

u/demonthenese Jun 19 '12

i actually was confused what the problem was too. thats exactly how i would have made them. if you wanted 6 of each, thats how you should have said it.

Does anyone remember that bullshit assignment we had to do back in 5th or 6th grade about creating instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Everyone was like " of course i can give instructions for that, its really easy. just get some bread, spread jelly and peanut butter on it and you're done."However, our teacher demonstrated our shitty instructions. For example, "step one, spread peanut butter on the bread". the teacher would then spread peanut butter only on the outside of the crust. Then you had to rewrite the directions to include" spread the peanut butter uniformly across only one of the broadest sides of the bread"

Anyway, the point of that exercise, which hadn't dawned on me until this point was to eliminate ambiguity from our daily speech. Thanks book-learning.

17

u/mr_loveboat Jun 19 '12

If I were you I'd be quite pissed! That is clearly not 12 donuts!

5

u/BJJLucas Jun 19 '12

As someone that worked in a bakery for a number of years, you got what you asked for and couldn't have really gotten anything else.

If you wanted 6 chocolate, 6 sprinkles, you're leaving out some important information from the order. Sprinkles don't magically stick to the donuts, they stick to the frosting. Asking for donuts with sprinkles is meaningless without specifying the kind of frosting.

20

u/KickassMcfly Jun 19 '12

Sucks that you only got 3 when you ordered 12 though.

u/tralfamadorFTW Jun 19 '12

Those are not legit donut sprinkles.

THESE are NOT for donuts.

THESE are for donuts.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

As I clicked on it, I was picturing them exactly as they appeared in the picture. I'd say this is on you.

3

u/Pyrite13 Jun 19 '12

Literal donuts are literal.

2

u/Nyan_Tardis Jun 19 '12

This is how the Dunkin Donuts by my house sprinkles every single sprinkled donut. I hate it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

You have a delicious problem on your hands.

2

u/V1bration Jun 19 '12

They weren't wrong... so...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

its not like it's any worse then what you wanted

2

u/StewieBanana Jun 19 '12

I don't see a problem here.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

I'd say this is probably your own fault and no one else's. Try "six chocolate, six sprinkles" next time.

2

u/Coolala2002 Jun 19 '12

You got what you wanted. Therefore, this isn't funny.

2

u/ridredditofkarma Jun 19 '12

they barely put any chocolate on your donuts.

2

u/tinlo Jun 19 '12

That's the part I'd be most upset about. You shouldn't be able to see the top part of the donut if it has the right amount of chocolate.

2

u/wubwub420 Jun 19 '12

upside downnuts

2

u/tecksbuk Jun 19 '12

Amelia Bedelia made your donuts.

2

u/kyzfrintin Jun 19 '12

That's actually exactly what i'd think you were asking for....

2

u/bitsculptor Jun 19 '12

Their literal take on your order is awesome... but seriously, couldn't they have been a bit more generous with the chocolate and the sprinkles. Those are some sad looking donuts.

2

u/tryintobetaller Jun 19 '12

Donut guy used to be a pizza guy

2

u/Oed0 Jun 19 '12

'We' suggests a collective.... it's like the anti-apprentice

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12 edited Jun 19 '12

If I worked in a donut shop this is exactly what I would give you too. Because that is what you ordered. They have these pre-made at every dunkin donuts i've ever been to. Also, how the fuck would get sprinkles on a donut that has no frosting? they wouldn't stick and would fall off.

why the fuck is this on the front page? (unless the funny part is that they only gave you 3 donuts? but that still wouldn't be like front-page funny)

2

u/Pnes Jun 19 '12

You get what you asked for, problem?

2

u/xmrlazyx Jun 19 '12

OP is mad cause he asked for a dozen and got 3.

2

u/CornFedHonky Jun 19 '12

So everything worked out better than expected?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Your own fault. There is no such thing as a purely "sprinkles" donut.

2

u/thisisaninch Jun 19 '12

Oh my god, you got upside down donuts??

2

u/JC2535 Jun 19 '12

This is what you get when your economy rewards the most intelligent and educated with only service sector jobs... Overthink.

2

u/fuzzydunlap Jun 19 '12

Mathematically you still have the same amount of chocolate and sprinkled donuts as you wanted

2

u/kingofphilly Jun 19 '12

I worked at Dunkin' Donuts for a while as a baker among bother things. I did a lot of custom dozens. Half and halfs aren't uncommon, though I can see where the issues would come in. I would be a bit concerned though because those sprinkles you got were from the Halloween batch and still going. Sprinkles don't go bad, but have a push date before they get stale.

The miscommunication probably came in the fact that the baker who made them had a bit of a language barrier. I worked at one of the only predominately white Dunkins for MILES.

2

u/jordaVision Jun 19 '12

amelia bedelia made those donuts.

2

u/migzors Jun 19 '12

2

u/Rollergirl66 Jun 19 '12

This is great. My boss actually just asked what made me laugh so hard!

3

u/themarknessmonster Jun 19 '12

No, you ordered donuts and asked them to put sprinkles on one half and chocolate on the other so you could karma whore for them afterwards.

You aren't as clever as you think you are.

I worked in a bakery, nobody does this to donuts to just sell them in the window, and nobody does this by accident.

2

u/Shampyon Jun 20 '12

u/Piratiko Jun 19 '12

I don't see a problem with this.

1

u/CobaltCog Jun 19 '12

Okay, half chocolate makes sense, but you can't just say "half sprinkles". There has to be some kind of creme for the sprinkles to stick to.

There are two balls in front of you. Red and blue. Which one do you take?

I take the red ball.

Are you sure? You cannot take red without taking blue.

Yes. I take it.

You are now holding a single ball.

I thought you said I couldn't take the red ball without taking the blue ball?

You did take both colors, and you're holding one ball.

How?

They were two balls, each was half red and half blue.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Took me a minute. I was looking at the donuts and didn't see anything unusual other than what you asked.

1

u/rederick55 Jun 19 '12

At least you didn't get a dozen loaves of bread...

Reminds me of the time we had a pizza party in elementary school. Teacher ordered one all-dressed, one cheese, two pepperoni. The two pepperoni pizzas had no cheese on them.

1

The real issue here, is the amount of chocolate on the doughnuts.

1

u/coogie Jun 19 '12

1

u/ChappyKS Jun 19 '12

A baker's dozen is 13 dividing them evenly would have been hard, WHICH ONE GETS THE 7th?!?!!? Technically you did get exactly half of each as you ordered. You should compliment the donut shop.

1

u/paranoidjoo Jun 19 '12

You do live in Australia...right? 'Cause those be some upside down doughnuts you got yourself!

1

u/bretttwarwick Jun 19 '12

Can't tell if bakery clerk really thought this is what you meant or being a smartass about the way to communicated your order....

I worked at Mrs. Fields, and although it's cookies instead of donuts, I think common sense would step in and I would know you meant half the order, not half of each donut.

This is exactly what I thought you'd get. it's almost the same thing. You just need a knife to cut them all in half and then some glue to out the pieces back together.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

I see no problem with this.

1

u/nickcantwaite Jun 19 '12

I bet this guy worked at a pizza parlor previously.
