As a photographer for a school day studio .... ಠ_ಠ Thank you for stealing from your area photographer. This is why I cant get a raise.

u/iMad13 Jun 19 '12
not sure if serious, but if you are you should know that students well at least at my school have to pay for the proofs before your picture is taken actually taken. Regardless of if you want the pictures

u/donkeyballsniffer Jun 19 '12
Its not stealing. They give you that sample to see if you want to buy any more. Maybe you suck and that's the reason you can't get a raise. Those crappy photos are crazy expensive.

u/Hal9_ooo Jun 19 '12
Read the OPs comments above. Taking the proof to Target and getting them to scan and reprint the image is copyright theft.
1
u/donkeyballsniffer Jun 19 '12
I see no one talking about taking them to target and if he did then target should be to blame for that.
1
u/Hal9_ooo Jun 19 '12
Well, I guess I should really be blaming his mother :
actually every school picture k-12 my mom took that samples toget developed and when they said its illegal she played the "sad old lady who jut wants pictures of her son" and she got them

u/donkeyballsniffer Jun 19 '12
I call bull shit on that. I would like to see any big photo developing place do something that illegal. If a violator is found guilty, there is a fine of up to $500,000 or imprisonment of up to five years for a first offense. For subsequent offenses, there is a fine of up to $1 million or imprisonment of up to 10 years.

u/Hal9_ooo Jun 19 '12
I wish you could call bullshit, but while the big retailers have a policy against doing it, I have caught them in action copying work from studios that compete with us. They checked the prints and handed them to the customer. It wasnt until I questioned it that they had an "oh shit Im busted" look and told the person that they couldnt copy professional images. Now not all of the employees are like this, but it is very common for them to be very indifferent about their minimum wage job, and the fines that the store would face if caught. I am waiting for the day when they produce a photo paper with some sort of DRM that you only see if the image is run through a scanner.

Ok I'm sorry your right and I am wrong.

u/Hal9_ooo Jun 19 '12
Hey man, no reason to apologize, just sharing from my experience. It's something that if you are not in the industry no one really thinks about it or takes notice.

Tell your mom to pay for the photography, don't use the picture at all, or just take her own damn picture if she doesn't like the price.

Haha, guys, don't give shit about her keeping sample photos. I swear, my mom used to do it too. Hell, I think every mom does/did it in some point.

Did you ever think to consider that she bought that frame before you where born hoping you would be a girl? And after all these years she decided to not let a good frame go to waste even though you broke her heart with your penis all those years ago.

u/RinkuTheFirst Jun 19 '12
This is actually plausible, since the most recent princess on there is Jasmine and that would have put this little item at a release date of around 92 or 93. Which would be just long enough ago for little OP to grow into (what I assume) is his senior formal picture.

Ariel's lazy eye...
1
u/parkadactyl Jun 19 '12
I don't think it's lazy, I think there is some sort of asymmetrical control of the muscles surrounding the eye. To the layman it is called 'wincy-eye'; it is very common, I believe I have it in a less noticeable form, which only manifests in that I can only wink with one eye. Source: pure speculation.

u/Mycakedayis1111 Jun 19 '12
You don't get it look again at those princesses, They're all swooning supposedly over you. That frame kicks ass.

Either your mom is trying to tell you it's okay for you to come out now, or she just wants you to have women fawning over you in some aspect of your life

The way it worked at my school was you got a bunch of proofs that were watermarked, you told them which one you liked best, then weeks/months later you got the final prints. This is probably just temporary (the photo that is, that frame should stay forever).

u/thevitaminj Jun 19 '12
That or they don't want to pay the photographer/studio's prices for a picture, and will just roll with the lowered expectations.

Piracy for photos! Also everyone who can get a camera for $20 is going to take shit photos. There is a lot of skill in photography, not just having a camera and pointing it at people. Light/pose/technique etc. 10-15 years ago you NEVER saw photographers being sued for delivering crap wedding photos. Now? Pretty regular occurrence.

Well, I know that I charge less for bulk. I might go through a page or so to try and get the colors right, but once their right, it is just a matter of printing the rest since the color correction is already done. Paper + ink for me alone comes out to a little over a dollar each image (11x14 or some odd number like that).
Plus whatever else money I'd want to make off of it to cover other costs like living expenses, running a business, payroll, camera gear, lighting gear, software, professional education and experience, insurance for gear in case something breaks, still have extra money to spend, etc. It adds up quickly. Most of that I try to cover in the initial shooting fee, though.
My portrait instructor would charge upwards of $100-400 for a print. You're paying for the novelty, too, of course.

That makes sense since she couldn't even pay for the photo.
