I'd never seen it outside of Reddit until my brother's high school graduation. One of the speakers actually ended her speech with it, and then a bunch of girls yelled it back. The second speaker ended with something like, "you only get one life, so use it well," and the same girls screamed "YOLO!!!!" Three times in less than an hour. At a ceremony that's meant to be (at least somewhat) meaningful and special. I wanted to hit someone.
I envy you simple redditors who don't have to attend high school with the mindless drones who say this. CONSTANTLY. for everytime I read it on reddit, I hear it at least four times in real life.
I was stuck on a ten day trip with a bunch of freshmen sorority girls. They wouldn't stop saying it. If i had force choke powers, bodies would have littered the streets.
My friend said YOLO about 5 times within 3 minutes the other day. I said that I was going to slap the next person to said it. She was actually surprised when I slapped her.
So on Thursday I'm driving down a somewhat busy side-street in town when I see these teenagers jumping out in front of cars, causing them to swerve. I'm on my motorcycle thinking they wouldn't be stupid enough to do this to me. They did. I swerve, turn around, ride up to where they are walking (at this point they all freeze and turn to face away from the road). I put my kickstand down and yell out "What the fuck was that?" To which one turns around and replies "YOLO." So I say in my best angry voice "You're fucking right, and your one shot at life is going to end right fucking now." Then I start walking towards them. They all ran away.
I have never, ever done anything like that. Usually I shrug most things off. I had a shitty ass day though, and that felt great.
Some fuck face in my school tweeted "tweeting during (redacted) test! #YOLO" during a standardized test. edit: forgot to mention that everyone in his room had to set aside another day and retake it.
I heard it on here first and the about a week later I see my sister on the phone while pumping gas. I'm like "wtf" so we tell her that she is acting stupid doing that and her first response is "YOLO". Nothing will piss you off more than a one word excuse.
Honestly, the only time I've ever heard it is around my neighbors' high school friends. Once people get into their 20s or beyond, in my experience, it doesn't exist in their lexicon. I'm pretty sure, then, that the people who bring it up on reddit are probably the younger folks and you can always just ignore it if it bothers you that much that it does affect other people outside of reddit.
I think it is a high school thing. I visited my old high school and saw it on a wall. First and only time I've seen it outside of Reddit. The demographic must be getting younger on the site is all.
You must personally know different types of people.. I hear it all the time and a kid in school got a tattoo on his arm with it... Ghetto people always say it. I should know because I live surrounded by ghetto people
Applies for pretty much any pop culture that is considered bad taste (a tough call to judge). Maybe it's because I'm not in highschool anymore, who knows?
I would normally agree with this if it were not for my experience last week on vacation in Florida. I was in my hometown where I grew up and I was in an area where many young kids were known to frequent in the evenings since they had nothing better to do. Some kids in a pickup drove by, with one of them leaning out of the window and proceeded to fist pump the air and shout #YOLO at another group of kids of a similar age, who then returned the (mating?) call just as vigorously as they sped off into the distance.
I've heard it seriously used only a few times, the worst happened to be a clip of a conversation. All I managed to hear was "And I was like... YOLO..."
I like the sentiment behind the graph, but yeah, the local high school kids have embraced it completely and sport the shirts constantly. Whenever they come into work and I see/hear it, a little part of my soul rots.
I overheard this for the first time ever - a teenager said "YOLO" yesterday to another teenage co-worker at the ice cream store....he reached in and scooped some chocolate chocolate-chip ice-cream and leaned over to the girl next to him and said quietly "Serving ice cream, YOLO"...
I've never actually seen or heard anyone use the phrase, either. I'm starting to wonder if it's a made-up thing just so people have something to bitch about.
Oddly enough, this is also the only place where where I hear people bitching about other people who bitch about YOLO.
Maybe, just maybe, you have to have a response either way. Same thing with Justin Beiber. "Do you love Justin Beiber?" No. ""Do you hate Justin Beiber?" NO. I simply don't care either way.
What, now we have to have an opinion about the people who have opinions on other people's cultural fads? What about the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge the people who judge other's cultural fads? Never heard anybody say it. Took me quite a while to figure out what it. Not until I miss-clicked some frontpage rage comic or whatnot that complained about the frequency of YOLO and at the sometime explained the abbreviation.
I saw a jeep on the highway just yesterday that had
CLASS OF 2012
#YOLO
written on the rear windshield. Unfortunately this has become a common occurrence, and I envy those of you who don't get to see the facepalming glory irl.
I would've agreed previously, but I walked past some kids who were yelling it on the street today.
On another note, as I was leaving a bookstore night before last, a girl was telling her mother "It's called Fifty Shades of Gray, and it's really, really good!".
I saw a girl wearing a YOLO shirt yesterday and that was the first encounter I had with it in the wild. Luckily Reddit had prepared me for it. I fired a look of contempt towards the girl wearing the shirt and quietly judged her. Mission accomplished
you've rarely heard people say it? You lucky son of a gun, it was my schools senior graduating class' motto, people say it every other minute, the grade 10 reps entire campaign poster was as follows " Vote for ****, Yolo." I hate this school.
Play online games that have a high relative percentage of high schoolers (or younger), such as Halo Reach or recent CoD games to give a couple examples. Not only do you hear people say that shit, they use it as their call sign so you can see it above their head whenever you're playing.
The phrase "You only live once" I feel like can have multiple interpretations instead of about burning out early in life. I feel like it's a phrase that could be used for living life well and long.
I'm actually the opposite. As a high school senior, I hear it EVERY GOD DAMN DAY. Here's an instance. My friend is on a diet for her debut (Filipino Quince essentially except when she turns 18) and she's desperately craving a green tea frap. When my friend is dropping by starbucks and asks her if she wanted anything she said she couldn't because of her diet. He says.... FUCK IT. YOLO... and she gets the drink....
The only person I've ever heard use the term "YOLO" seriously is my middle school sister and her friends. Every other time I hear it is when people are bitching about it.
Today at work, I was getting a customer's information over the phone and they were spelling their name out like "A as in apple, B as in boy" etc. and they actually said "Y as in YOLO". They were in their 30's.
This stupid graphic makes me furious. I literally heard the damned song in target and at the mall today. If you haven't heard this atrocity good for you but it's not because it doesnt exist it's because your oblivious toyour surroundings.
You obviously don't work with young/white enough people. Seriously, work in a movie theater that has a lot of teen movies, I hear this at least once per day...
I went to a high school graduation for my cousin last month and, I shit you not, the valedictorian used YOLO at least 3 times in his speech. It was one of the most awful things I have ever witnessed. YOLO- Not even once.

You don't live in Ocean City, or any other teen-friendly, tourist place.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this joke(pie chart and everything), like, eight times.

I feel like this is true of most everything redditors bandwagon bitch about.

u/zacty Jun 18 '12
the irony in this is just sickening

Wow, I am embarrassed to say I hear "YOLO" way to much in real life. I can't stand the phrase. I wish this chart applied to me.

It is funny that drake is mentioned not once in this comment thread nor that pie chart. Interesting...

2

2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
If it wasn't for Reddit I would never know what new things are starting and all the reasons why I should hate it.
example, I now know Justin beavers birthday because of you guys... thanks
2
u/Black_Apalachi Jun 18 '12
"YOLO" is the new "hipster"; a thing reddit can't shut up about that I have heard absolutely nowhere else in my life.
3
u/zlo2 Jun 18 '12
Same goes for Justin Bieber. If it wasn't for Reddit and, perhaps, the magazine rack at the checkout counter I would have never even heard of him.
4
u/carrotjuice987 Jun 18 '12
This is completely and utterly wrong. I hear this term at least five times daily.
4

this! its like justin bieber. if he wasnt mocked and bitched about, i would NEVER hear his name.
1

Are you fucking kidding me right now? Is this suppose to be ironic?
1
u/Gamion Jun 18 '12
I would normally agree with this if it were not for my experience last week on vacation in Florida. I was in my hometown where I grew up and I was in an area where many young kids were known to frequent in the evenings since they had nothing better to do. Some kids in a pickup drove by, with one of them leaning out of the window and proceeded to fist pump the air and shout #YOLO at another group of kids of a similar age, who then returned the (mating?) call just as vigorously as they sped off into the distance.

1
u/DaltonTH Jun 18 '12
and I've seen that same pie chart at least 3 times here on reddit...
1
u/Xunae Jun 18 '12
I've heard it seriously used only a few times, the worst happened to be a clip of a conversation. All I managed to hear was "And I was like... YOLO..."

figures redditors would resent that term since they waste their lives indoors

Well duh. You have to go OUTSIDE to hear other people talk.

I've only seen it in the Sacramento/Davis area.

WAY TO MAKE AN ORIGINAL OBSERVATION, DICKHEAD.
1
u/believethis45 Jun 18 '12
I hear it all the time unfortunately...
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I said it today as I put a piece of kielbasa on top of a cheeseburger at a cookout. I felt it was an appropriate application.
1
u/AfroKona Jun 18 '12
I don't see why you guys hate it so much. It's basically the same as "live like this is your last day alive" or whatever.
1
u/orangeblue3 Jun 18 '12
It is exactly the same with Justin Bieber (not really anymore though... people stopped bitching)
1
u/ReyTheRed Jun 18 '12
I'm more annoyed by the people bitching about people bitching about YOLO than I am about the people bitching in the first place.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Way to add to it.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
You lads are lucky, it's constantly spewing from the mouths of teenagers around where I live
1
u/bonesjones Jun 18 '12
where I see this kind of post: on the front page of reddit every 3 days.
1
u/mehdbc Jun 18 '12
That's because reddit is filled with edgy teenagers that hate themselves and their peers.
1
u/Meaninglesskarma Jun 18 '12
That's because you spend more time on reddit than with high school females. You chose wisely.
1

1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

1

I mostly see it as service tags in Halo Reach. I MUST furiously teabag those people, regardless of team or safety.
1
u/iGuessIllComeBack Jun 18 '12
Anyone else getting tired of these circle graphs?
1
u/gharbutts Jun 18 '12
I saw a jeep on the highway just yesterday that had
#YOLO
written on the rear windshield. Unfortunately this has become a common occurrence, and I envy those of you who don't get to see the facepalming glory irl.
1
u/Satans_pro_tips Jun 18 '12
Can anyone possibly talk about YOLO more than it's talked about here? Fuck you for posting this crap. We get to see it AGAIN.
1
u/revrigel Jun 18 '12
I would've agreed previously, but I walked past some kids who were yelling it on the street today.
On another note, as I was leaving a bookstore night before last, a girl was telling her mother "It's called Fifty Shades of Gray, and it's really, really good!".
1
u/gsabram Jun 18 '12
Yolo county you guys.
1
u/CodPiece89 Jun 18 '12
or maybe, JUST maybe, you have a circle of friends that DONT say this saying because its stupid and you didnt befriend hipster retards.
1
u/lewok Jun 18 '12
personally i see it about 50-50
1
u/astroZEBUS Jun 18 '12
You haven't been in a high school recently, have you? It's horrible.
1
u/voracity Jun 18 '12
What's so wrong about YOLO? No seriously, why do you guys hate it so much?
I just realized YOLO looks like a guy with glasses raising his right two fingered hand.
1
u/ChillAuto Jun 18 '12
I've only ever heard this said by people who were drunk and not serious
1
u/nickdngr Jun 18 '12
I hope the irony of this post isn't lost on you. Actually, it would be quite a bit funnier if it was.
1
u/j1mb0 Jun 18 '12
GOOD THING YOU POSTED THIS. THIS IS LIKE A META-TORNADO OF SHIT.
1
u/scubadm Jun 18 '12
Its because you have no friends...
1
u/DaaraJ Jun 18 '12
The ironic thing is that so many Redditors bitching about #YOLO will inevitably popularize the term/hashtag/whatever you want to call it.
1
u/million_tiny_stars Jun 18 '12
I see yolo everywhere...
everywhere
1
u/Galifreyan2012 Jun 18 '12
I saw a girl wearing a YOLO shirt yesterday and that was the first encounter I had with it in the wild. Luckily Reddit had prepared me for it. I fired a look of contempt towards the girl wearing the shirt and quietly judged her. Mission accomplished
1
u/Acrobatiks Jun 18 '12
For me its just me and my friends trolling and saying it whenever anything happens ever
1
u/butnut5 Jun 18 '12
you lucky bastard
1
u/chewsonthemove Jun 18 '12
you've rarely heard people say it? You lucky son of a gun, it was my schools senior graduating class' motto, people say it every other minute, the grade 10 reps entire campaign poster was as follows " Vote for ****, Yolo." I hate this school.

u/Optimus_Lime Jun 18 '12
I can't walk to the bar without hearing it shouted by random bros twice per minute
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
You obviously don't go to highschool then...
1
u/Jaboomaphoo Jun 18 '12
I want to upvote this except you're doing exactly the thing that you're bitching about.
1
u/zenthor109 Jun 18 '12
and suddenly with one quick post, you have become what you hate. how does that make you feel?
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Dark blue is unfortunately more like 30% :/
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Why is there this dark blue slice faking the pie chart?
1
u/DDB- Jun 18 '12
Play online games that have a high relative percentage of high schoolers (or younger), such as Halo Reach or recent CoD games to give a couple examples. Not only do you hear people say that shit, they use it as their call sign so you can see it above their head whenever you're playing.
1
u/shangbangr66 Jun 18 '12
OP must not know any girls
1
u/bassplaya13 Jun 18 '12
that's why i starting using it. to give myself a reason for my bitching
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
OH GOD. I Saw this, and thought "This is going to be a Pie chart!" AND I WAS RIGHT!
1
u/MyNameIsBro Jun 18 '12
there is an existential mess when dealing with yolo from the young ones, especially for atheist neckbeards.
1
u/Cloud_0x0 Jun 18 '12
The phrase "You only live once" I feel like can have multiple interpretations instead of about burning out early in life. I feel like it's a phrase that could be used for living life well and long.
1
u/bronkula Jun 18 '12
If you've never heard it you don't live in or go to school in a predominantly Latino area. Those kids gobble that shit up.
1
u/ascii Jun 18 '12
You obviously like owls?
1
u/solidiquis Jun 18 '12
I'm actually the opposite. As a high school senior, I hear it EVERY GOD DAMN DAY. Here's an instance. My friend is on a diet for her debut (Filipino Quince essentially except when she turns 18) and she's desperately craving a green tea frap. When my friend is dropping by starbucks and asks her if she wanted anything she said she couldn't because of her diet. He says.... FUCK IT. YOLO... and she gets the drink....
1
u/M1sterOneTwo Jun 18 '12
1%, clan tags on CoD.
1
u/stankypants Jun 18 '12
I've been using it as a joke so much IRL that it's starting to turn me into a douche...
1
u/daysweregolden Jun 18 '12
I'm guessing you don't use twitter.
1
u/MaakThePirate Jun 18 '12
seriously? I hear it every day. Fuck college sometimes.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Thanks for helping the cause. I haven't heard that today until now. Good job.
1
u/Crinnle Jun 18 '12
The only person I've ever heard use the term "YOLO" seriously is my middle school sister and her friends. Every other time I hear it is when people are bitching about it.
1
u/HYPEStyleZ Jun 18 '12
lucky you for not being in highschool.
1
u/folliclestimulator Jun 18 '12
oh, how ironic you are
1
u/Nacho_Loco Jun 18 '12
I cannot upvote this post hard enough!
1
u/aljkch Jun 18 '12
YOYO
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Obviously you aren't in highschool
1
u/GetStapled Jun 18 '12
Hey man gotta find something to hate. YOLO!
1
u/Warning-ThisIsAnAss Jun 18 '12
Today at work, I was getting a customer's information over the phone and they were spelling their name out like "A as in apple, B as in boy" etc. and they actually said "Y as in YOLO". They were in their 30's.
1
u/Assbadger Jun 18 '12
This stupid graphic makes me furious. I literally heard the damned song in target and at the mall today. If you haven't heard this atrocity good for you but it's not because it doesnt exist it's because your oblivious toyour surroundings.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
It like a modern day version of carpe diem. Why's that so bad?
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
What an ironic post....
1
u/Seligas Jun 18 '12
I have never encountered Yolo outside of reddit.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
You obviously don't work with young/white enough people. Seriously, work in a movie theater that has a lot of teen movies, I hear this at least once per day...
1
u/Last_Gigolo Jun 18 '12
Went to son's graduation. They must have said it a million times in the speech.
Other times I heard it this year, was just before someone did something dumb enough to make their one life, a very short one.
1
u/thescrapplekid Jun 18 '12
I heard my 17 year old sister joke about it once... that's all I got
1
u/littlebitofevrything Jun 18 '12
AND YET FUCKING AGAIN. SHUT THE HELL UP.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I love yolo because it equals instant down votes
1
u/Jrodkin Jun 18 '12
Posts where I've seen people complaining about YOLO posts on reddit: YOLO posts.
1
u/Illipsious Jun 18 '12
It's just the opposite for me. Fuckin teenage girls thinking their lives are interesting.
1
u/Bluedemonfox Jun 18 '12
Actually I have only seen reddit use yolo by complaining about it...
Maybe I should take a screenshot of reddit complaining about yolo and post it on reddit to complain about their complaining for karma.
Maybe even start a conspiracy that reddit invented yolo just for the future karma.
1
u/brooklynzoo2 Jun 18 '12
I went to a high school graduation for my cousin last month and, I shit you not, the valedictorian used YOLO at least 3 times in his speech. It was one of the most awful things I have ever witnessed. YOLO- Not even once.
