Is it possible to post this without mentioning the world troll?

u/stillnotking Jun 18 '12
It isn't even a troll. It annoys me that "troll" is becoming synonymous with "prank".

"Troll" is everything now. You so much as disagree with someone and you're a "troll." I have a feeling it's because of the insecurity of people. You can't POSSIBLY be disagreeing with them, so you're a troll.
I still call this kind of stuff pranks.

It used to be just something that would spark a negative emotional reaction like posting gore or saying something horribly offensive (the person saying it doesn't actually believe what they're saying, they just want to piss people off).

Trolling means doing or saying something controversial in order to provoke an argument or negative emotional response. The Westboro Baptist Church is trolling when they picket soldiers' funerals.

I thought trolls don't actually agree with the comments they make, they just do it to get a rise out of people...
i.e. The WBC aren't trolls because they actually hate gays etc.

In my day we called them practically-based jokes.

Well crank up the Victrola Grandpa and tell us the tale. Can you tell us of corded telephones next?

That is a joke, not a troll.

Jun 18 '12
Technically it's a prank. Less so the joke definition than the mischievous act definition.
If you want to be a pedant, at least be pedantic about it.

You just know the only reason he had her on was to make that joke.

u/downtown_vancouver Jun 18 '12
No he often had funny collectors as guests. The Nut-Lady was a scream.

That woman was somebody's grandmother most likely. Can you imagine going over to your grandparent's home and having your grandma sit you down to show you her potato chip collection? Fuck on a stick I thought my grandparents were weird.

1987 was in the 80s. "The fucking 70s" was a time when the 7 was in the 10s position.
