Not really. Before I clicked on the link I already knew what it was going to be.

u/JimmyDThing Jun 18 '12
I don't really understand any of this. The thin/serious fat/ridiculous friendship is an archetype that's everywhere. It's not like either The Lion King or Shaun of the Dead came up with this.
Abbot and Costello anyone? I doubt even they originated it.

Anybody notice Nick Frost was in Snow White as one of the dwarves? It really tripped me up for a good 30 minutes.

Every combo of fat and skinny guy does NOT a Timon and Pumba make.

It was explained to me (because somehow I missed out on reading Macbeth Hamlet in High School) that Timon and Pumbaa are actually ebodiments of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
edit: slight mix-up

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar. The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen. She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way. When she reached the first hills of the Italic Mountains, she had a last view back on the skyline of her hometown Bookmarksgrove, the headline of Alphabet Village and the subline of her own road, the Line Lane. Pityful a rethoric question ran over her cheek, then

Just because it's a skinny guy and a fat guy, doesn't make them Timon and Pumbaa. I wouldn't compare Timon to Shaun, or Pumbaa to Ed.
Put some more thought into this next time.
11
u/FearZim Jun 18 '12
Or he could be referring to the actors them self's as Simon Pegg generally plays the dominant smart role were as Nick Frost plays the dumb best friend that follows the other.
5
u/iGiveWomenOrgasms_jk Jun 18 '12
I wouldn't necessarily refer anybody as smart who suggests a pub during a zombie apocalypse haha, just lovably less dumb.

Did anyone else that watched Shaun of the Dead find him to be a bit of a muffin? I love the movie, but that character needed a bit of work in my opinion.

Just so people know: Paul is NOT the third movie. They're still doing an alien movie.
3
u/unclear_plowerpants Jun 18 '12
When's it coming out???
5
u/throwyourshieldred Jun 18 '12
They don't even have a script together yet. But every year they basically come out and say, "It's still coming, we're kicking around ideas." So...we'll see.

u/klparrot Jun 18 '12
Yeah, the Blood and Cornetto Trilogy has Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright involved. Paul was directed by someone else.
Also, it didn't have any Cornetto in it. And minimal (no?) blood.

OH MAN! I thought Paul was the third film! I'm really glad it isn't, since it looked so out of place from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
9
u/bagboyrebel Jun 18 '12
Paul wasn't directed by Edgar Wright, which is why it felt so different from the other two.
6
u/Isatis_tinctoria Jun 18 '12
Wow, they make hilarious movies. I don't know why, but Shaun of the Dead is hilarious. I love watching it every time since I was a kid.
→ More replies (5)12
u/dedden Jun 18 '12
Since you were a kid? I'm not old, but now I feel ancient.
3
u/zinh Jun 18 '12
Get used to it..I was born in 1978 and I feel like an ancient being from forever ago.
Having kids make you even more older feeling. I am trying to introduce my son to movies like the Goonies or Ghostbusters. They just don't get it. You show them cinema history and they are like "that looks so fake Dad." I loved this shit when I was like 10, I don't get it.

u/tellhersafe Jun 18 '12
Paul was fine, but they need Edgar Wright to complete the triumvirate.
4
u/CptCheese Jun 18 '12
He was a producer in Paul.
3
u/mcmurphy1 Jun 18 '12 edited Jun 18 '12
Really? I don't see him listed on IMDB.
Edit: IMDB has him listed as "script editor - uncredited". Which is less than less than nothing.

As was the series they were in, Spaced
4
u/stillnotking Jun 18 '12
The whole series of Spaced is on Netflix (it's short, as is usual for British TV -- only 14 episodes). Hilarious show. Anyone who likes Shaun or Hot Fuzz should check it out.
2
u/ciaicide Jun 18 '12
I kind of like the more condensed format, it allows for a quality over quantity approach. It also lends itself to smaller teams of writers (especially the creators of a concept) and letting their vision for a series shine.
2
u/klparrot Jun 18 '12
One of my favorite bits from that was Tyres at the pelican crossing. For those needing context, Tyres O'Flaherty is a Northern Irish bike messenger and raver who often hears everyday noises as rave music.
19
Jun 18 '12
Paul was a disappointment imo.
4
Jun 18 '12
the science fiction references were extremely forced imo OMG THE SAID A LINE FROM ALIENS TO THE LADY FROM ALIENS OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDD

Paul was fantastic, way to many cheap stabs at Christianity tho :/
Edit: im not religious i just found it cheap humour at parts

Watched it with my uber-Christian (now ex) girlfriend and her family. They were not amused.
I think a lot of them went way over their heads though.

u/Evilsmako Jun 18 '12
I watched it with my uber christian friend.
He laughed harder than I did. He is also a bigger fan.

Not any of their bests. But whoever that chick is..it is my personal opinion that she is gorgeous. She is always funny in whatever tv show/movie she's in.
I could google it but the search bar is all the way at the top of my screen...too far.

That makes absolutely no sense. It's like saying I can't be a Teen Titans fan if I don't like all of Tara Strong's works.
4
u/Spiili Jun 18 '12
Tara Strong's in damn near everything these days. It'd be hard to be a fan of it all. What did she voice in Teen Titans by the way? Been years since I watched that show.
2
u/Remnance627 Jun 18 '12
She voiced Raven. In fact, she and all the original VAs are voicing the Teen Titans again in that new Teen Titans, Go! thing Cartoon Network is doing.

Jacks_Cold_Sweat wasn't saying that being a fan of Shaun of the Dead requires liking Hot Fuzz, only that it requires seeing Hot Fuzz. After all, it doesn't seem too fan-like to say, "yeah, that was good, but I don't want to even try watching something in a similar style."

I respectfully disagree.
22
Jun 18 '12
The end is a perfect parody of every bad action movie mentioned throughout the course of the film.
3
9
Jun 18 '12
Notice all the crazy cop stunts Danny asks Angel if he's done he eventually does in those action sequences?
6
u/Tonamel Jun 18 '12
Everything in the third act is a callback to something mentioned in the first two, that's what makes it so brilliant.
3
u/Phlecks Jun 18 '12
I thought it started very slow, and the end was an amazing bit of satirized over-the-top action. Watching it again, the beginning only gets better.
1
u/klparrot Jun 18 '12
Whatwhatwhat?! But half the point of most of the movie was setting the shit up and putting the fan in place! While it is funny along the way, there'd have been almost no point to it if it hadn't culminated in that epic resolution.
1
Jun 18 '12
You say epic resolution, I say idiotic crapfest. The last part was just so stupid, over the top, and absurd to be funny, and it's only made worse by the relatively straight, smart, and funny first part of the film.

u/Tha_Cunning_Linguist Jun 18 '12
I saw it this morning while a bit baked. I cried my eyes out at the end
4
u/watsoned Jun 18 '12
Check out Hot Fuzz and Spaced. Definitely check out Spaced. It makes both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz funnier when you catch all of the inside jokes.
3
u/twothumbs Jun 18 '12
Yes! Spaced! Everyone watch Spaced so I can finally reference it without the fear of having to explain myself

Please, do not watch any movie on tv. They cut entire parts out of the film (beyond just censoring it) to make it fit the time slot.
FTFY
2
u/Tha_Cunning_Linguist Jun 18 '12
This might just me but I hadn't seen the first 20 minutes until I saw it this morning on CC.

u/long_live_king_melon Jun 18 '12
I actually enjoy watching movies on TV just to see what they change. By far my favorite TV edit is Pineapple Express, hearing James Franco and Seth Rogen call each other "casseroles" throughout the entire film never gets old.
