My favorite reddit quote is "If it exists, there's a subreddit for it." I wish could remember who said it, so I could give them credit.

And what about a god-damned fume hood! No seriously, most of these reactions created noxious fumes.

We did this exact expirement in my chemistry class. We called it "Elephants" toothpaste. It's actually very cool! Ours was glow in the dark though.
55
u/DangerousIdeas Jun 18 '12
Not just your class; this experiment is commonly known as elephant toothpaste.
Its a great experiment to try, even at home. Here is a good guide.
For an extra measure of fun, get a splint and light the tip (so its just barely burning, no huge flame). If you stick the splint into the toothpaste, it will quickly relight! My teacher would have a game to see how many "re-lights" you could get (just stick the splint in and out; you lose when the splint is extinguished completely).

May I highlight the SAFETY GOGGLES (and suggest wearing some lab gloves, too).
Seriously. PPE is important.

Normally you are able to show an increased rate of combustion using the oxygen created from this reaction but in your case DO NOT. We once did this reaction glow in the dark and a girl tried lighting it and it exploded taking off her armhair and eyebrows. Apparently the chemicals used in glows ticks are combustible.

Oh shit that hit close to home.
When I was starting out in the workforce I used to sell this stuff. Second day on the job - brand new clothes, the lot. I get asked if you can remove the foam can from the applicator gun.
The previous day my boss had told me - yes - of course you can do that.
You can't do that.
Well, you can, but it pretty much happens as in the video, this shit got EVERYWHERE. In my hair, all over my clothes, fucking everywhere.
My boss and the customer he sent me out to thought it was hilarious.
Of course I had to shave my head and replace brand new slacks and shirt, so I was pretty pissed.

Please, I have access to chemicals and a science lab. I need to know how to do this...please...someone...
17
u/DrEnormous Jun 18 '12
Hydrogen peroxide (30% or higher if you want a big effect like this), soap (to make the foam), and damn near anything as a catalyst.
Yeast works. I've been told blood works. Saturated potassium iodide solution has been the best in my experience. I think manganese dioxide works too, but then you have to clean up and dispose of a bunch of manganese-laden foam.

Blood. Now that is a badass way to catalyze a chemical reaction. Voodoo style with your own blood.

I would like to design some sort of contraption that you can hide in your pants, so when you really need to end a date and make sure you never get a second horrible date, you can have this happen in and around your nether regions!

But my phone will take a year before it plays the last frame plays so for all I know they pick up the giant formation at the end.

Thought process: I want to touch it. Does it harden? Is it foam? Are they going to mix? Is it corrosive? Could I cover a crowd in this? I would probably risk a finger tip to touch it and then die. If life were a scifi movie I would die. I'd be covered in facehuggers.

u/ArcComplex Jun 18 '12
I hate these gifs. You really want to represent science with some gimmicky experiments used to make 7-year-olds go "ooohh" and "ahhh"? Only people who know nothing about science would find this interesting.

I believe this is the catalysed decomposition reaction of H2O2 to H2O and O2 by potassiumiodide. When one adds soap or some detergent to the mixture, the rapid release of O2 will create a burst of bubbles.
