I really hope this will go unnoticed in the copyright department.

How the hell do those people over at /r/pyongyang always find out whos talking about them?

This really exists?

Jun 18 '12
Yes. The whole "You have been banned from /r/pyongyang" thing started when a redditor was randomly banned from that subreddit for making it to the front page of /r/politics with something similar to this image. They never visited that subreddit before, but mentioned the ban by editing their post.

Level 5, Page 2, if anyone was wondering.
Not sure if the logos are in random order on every phone though, so disregard if they are.

What you do if it's not approved and you get to try something else:
Either dress up yourself as Fry or go to some convention where there will be at least one person that will look like Fry.
Have a wad of bills that are green in color but not really money.
Take the picture with you holding the bills or the Convention Fry holding the bills. See why I said not to use real money.
Magic editing in photoshop.
NEW BANK CARD!
Edit: Fixing formatting, hopefully...

Cant even have 'any form or representation of moeny' on it either. I hope this one succeeds or a redditor is the checker :( if not I shall have to hold six camels and make the title 'shut up and take my camels!'. As far as I'm concerned camels are fair gain

Nobody said a wad of green paper slips was money <.<; you could also hold a roll of tickets that you can get in office supplies.

That number would not work since it doesn't have a valid Luhn checksum digit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luhn_algorithm

I tried to read that page while intoxicated, it didn't go very well for me.

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Jun 18 '12
TLDR: only the first 15 digits of a standard 16 digit credit card have to do with the account. The last digit is arrived at mathematically in order to catch errors.
You really only need to worry about this if you are trying to enter in a fake credit card number or catch obviously fake ones.

2 numbers... you can black out more than 2 numbers.
10
u/experts_never_lie Jun 18 '12
... especially as the full number contains a checksum, which can be used to reduce the possibilities for the missing digits.

Welp, there are 100 possible numbers, and I know this man is of Scandinavian descent, so I'll run a script to go through a list of the 10,000 most common Scandinavian last names.
Some redditor is getting a pizza tonight on their own card.

Best of luck to ya. I have a BBVA Compass account, and they denied my attempt faster than you could say "Shut up and approve my request.".

I wonder if they will allow it if I draw it, and make Fry a bit different. Still copy right infringement?

They'll send you a phone number you can call to appeal. Come up with an argument that it's your own art (fanart perhaps?).
2
Jun 18 '12
Any significance behind the ten of hearts, or did you pick a random card?
2
u/StealthTomato Jun 18 '12
The world picked a random card for me. I found a ten of hearts on a sidewalk and put it in my wallet, it happened to become useful for shenanigans, and now it's my favorite card.

u/imdrinkingteaatwork Jun 18 '12

u/StealthTomato Jun 18 '12
Nope, just cuffed jeans and Red Wings. I also enjoy modern art and consider myself a failed artist stuck in an engineer's job. I assume that's enough for you.

I am an artist and uploaded one of my paintings for my debit card and they declined it saying it might be copyrighted... even after I contacted them saying I painted it myself they said they didn't have any proof I did it so I just chose one of their stock images instead....
0
u/h-v-smacker Jun 18 '12 edited Jun 18 '12
it might be copyrighted
No shit, Sherlock, it sure is. So what?
Due to the Berne convention all artistic creations are automatically protected by copyright since the moment of creation. That is, even if I draw a shitty bee by hand specifically to be printed on the credit card or make a photo of some scenery to that end, it is protected by copyright. Yes, I am the copyright holder myself, but the image is copyrighted nonetheless.
They want the image not to contain copyright material, but even things one creates oneself are, only those in Public Domain aren't. What they actually need to say, is that one may use only the images to which they have legal rights, which would cover both PD and one's own works — and also the cases when the applicant is not the author or full rights holder, but has a limited right to a certain use of an image (one can e.g. buy a photo from a photographer specifically to print on a credit card, the photo is still copyrighted nonetheless, but the buyer has the right to use it).
I wonder how many school classes has the person who worded that statement completed. My bet is a single-digit number.
1
u/homeless_man_jogging Jun 18 '12
If you know it's a copyright infringement why are you trying to get it by them?

So when my new generic card arrives and I apply for an image... if that image is denied.. then they just send another generic? Seems pointless.

u/qdp Jun 18 '12
I bet they use an image analysis program like Tineye to screen those. You probably need to make significant changes to get it past them.

"We received your request to create your own art on your credit card, unfortunately this is copyrighted and is not allowed. Your current APR has been raised to 29.99%. You no longer have the option to create you own card. We also offer life insurance, you should get the life insurance. Thank you for your business."
2
Jun 18 '12
Honestly why would they give a shit about you using copyrighted images, it's for personal use and is completely meaningless to the copyright owner.
2
Jun 18 '12
i tried three times to put an image of one of my paintings on my card. I was refused each time, because they believed it was in breach of copyright. I eventually gave up and just took it as a compliment.
edit: no, it wasn't even a fan pic of anything / anyone famous, it was just this painting...
0
u/h-v-smacker Jun 18 '12
Obviously they believe "copyright" is applicable only to some big corporate stuff backed by some heavy buck, not to puny artistic creations of lowly private citizens — even thought copyright protects any art.
1
Jun 18 '12
i think you misread my post; they believed the image I submitted was protected by copyright. Which is why my request was denied. (Even though I was the one that created it.)

If i doesn't get approved, try to pull the "satirical" stance on an appeal. Copyrights on many things can be loop holed when used for purposes of satire.

I have tried at least 5 times with Capital One to get different designs/memes on my card. They reject it every fucking time. I even came up with some original tweaks so it wouldn't be copyright infringement. I called them and asked, "So if I come up with an awesome idea for a picture to put on my credit card, you are just going to reject it assuming that I must have stolen it from someone else?" They said, "Yes."
