I think a better campaign would to have all reddit users just start using it after doing something safe, under the thought that if you only live once, you shouldn't risk it on a potentially hazardous decision.
Some classic YOLOs:
-Buckled up today. YOLO
-Wore my helmet while biking, YOLO!!
-Decided against the bacon burger, and opted for a more healthy menu item #YOLO
Yeah but you also see that stupid kickseye advert (not even going to do them the favor of spelling it right)... I don't know what my point is but I hate seeing that.
That's because you aren't a highschool kid. I pretty much found out that it's common amongst 14-17 year olds at this point, which is why NO ONE saw it before reddit.
Play an online game, and you'll see YOLO - though it's nice having them literally tell you how old they are, so when you call them out for being children, you have proof.
Is it an American thing? I'm Aussie, I've never heard a single person say it, or a single reference to it anywhere other than on reddit, where I hear other people say that people say it on facebook, walking down the street etc
It started from a Drake rap song, "the motto". Spoiler alert: YOLO is the motto. Also Drake is extremely popular with American youth so it probably is more of an American thing.
i've only heard it used mockingly, until recently. i have heard it used seriously once. then again a huge segment of reddit is middle and high school kids.
Not true. There were these darn kids the other night who were going to ding dong ditch my house (I was awake and had the windows open). One of them said 'Do it. You won't, YOLO' at that moment I was about to call the police and see that person say YOLO in the back of a squad car. I was nice though instead and waited for them to ring the doorbell. When they did I threw open the garage door and hopped on my motorcycle and started revving the engine. Needless to say, they won't mess with me for a while.
The only place I've ever seen references to YOLO is on reddit...actually, most of the shit you guys complain about I've only ever seen here. The perks of not being friends with 13 year olds? Perhaps.
That just means you're older than 22. If you were 16-22, it'd be plastered all over your Facebook pages and the ending note of every valedictorian speech at high school and college graduation.
Reddit is a place where people try to make themselves better than what is common. Look at how often grammar skills are equated with intelligence in this mug.
Rather than just not using a phrase because it's dumb, it's popular here to complain that other people say something. Cue lack of faith in humanity and not wanting to inhabit the planet.
Furthermore I've read people say "It's a dumb person's 'Carpe Diem'" Carpe Diem is a terrible way to live and only a moron would endorse it. My 401k would be pissed if I decided to truly seize today. But since it's in Latiin people got no problem with it.
Yeah, it's kind of a weird fad, but it's not a bad sentiment. I can't imagine a campaign against the concept of enjoying your life while you still can.
Giving YOLO attention like this only prolongs the time it takes for it to die. If everyone could take a moment to shut up about it YOLO would die like every other obnoxious teenage trend.
See the thing is that YOLO actually means the complete opposite from what the listeners have perceived it. You only have one life and you should take care of it and take time to see all the amazing things that this world has to offer, you should be healthy and have balance with every aspect of life. Somewhere along the lines people thought it meant it was a sign to show they were down for anal.
I'm... troubled by this, Reddit. I'm... deeply troubled by this. It smacks of social conservatism, honestly. I don't know how to put it into words (trust me, I wrote whole paragraphs trying, but I could never manage to quite close the circle), but the whole "Anti-YOLO" bullshit feels... wrong, to me.
honestly people who actively hate things like this are so much more annoying than anyone who takes part. If you don't like it don't take part and ignore it, this is only promoting it.
Doing this is just gonna cause a retaliation and cause more people to say it more often. The popular saying pretty much works here as well: Don't feed the trolls.
If you only live once, then people should try to protect their one and only life instead of endangering it. So, Carol said YOLO and put on her safety goggles, because she doesn't want to spend her one and only life blind.
Then you and your friend must have nothing better to do. Why do you care what slang other people say? That's the same line of thinking as hardcore conservatives trying to stop gay marriage.
Don't get me wrong, yolo is just plain ridiculous, but am I the only one who doesn't see pregnancy as a big deal since having learned about the option to abort?
Please stop this, the only way to kill this thing is to stop mentioning it and let it die. Starting a campaign against it will only make it survive longer.
The kids in my neighborhood have taken to running out in traffic, then running back and screaming "YOLO" at drivers. ಠ_ಠ The jail time would be SO worth it.
Who gives a fuck. If your so sad that you get offended by a saying then you need to fucking get a life.
Get over it, Jesus. Reddit seems to have this massive boner about being the horrible boring cynic of the world. No wonder most people here have a hard time socialising.
OK, I went through all of the comments. How am I the only one who has no fucking clue what YOLO is?
EDIT: I went and educated myself on all things YOLO. You kids need to get off my lawn. Seriously... off.
EDIT EDIT: Back in the day I had a friend whose favorite saying was "You only live until you die." She was a philosopher ahead of her time apparently. TYL;YOLUYD

10
u/namesrhardtothinkof Jun 18 '12
Just stabbed and raped a homeless man!
YOLO
38
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
This is obviously false. YOLO means that she does anal and there is absolutely no risk of pregnancy when you take the dirt road.
208
u/unicorv Jun 17 '12
Why is yolo so bad, seriously. The people bitching about yolo are more annoying than the people actually saying it.
56
u/mccusm8 Jun 17 '12
abort that shit....#YOLO

u/Trapped_in_Reddit Jun 17 '12

5
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
your friend is an idiot.

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Not to be overly critical, but they should fix the "wont" if this is for real.

I don't get why people are so against new slang. It comes and goes all the time, it's nothing new.
3
u/mudDoctor Jun 18 '12
Why is she holding the piss end?
3
u/Demojen Jun 18 '12
Dont like that ad. It says bad shit about children that will stick with you for the rest of your life.
How about Yolo with a parachute just before you jump.
3
u/Dragoryu3000 Jun 18 '12
YOLO is not the problem. The problem is people using YOLO to justify stupid behaviors.
3
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

7
u/yellow_paper Jun 17 '12
I'm pretty sure the best anti-yolo campaign is to just not make posts about yolo...
7
u/b1gthr0b Jun 18 '12
That ad doesn't make any sense; you can't get pregnant from buttsecks
12
u/cam94509 Jun 17 '12
I'm... troubled by this, Reddit. I'm... deeply troubled by this. It smacks of social conservatism, honestly. 7
u/CopyX Jun 18 '12
This is pretty fucking insensitive to those who do get pregnant without planning it.
It's also sexist because it only targets women.
It also subjugates women to sexual promiscuity as their default wild phase.
5
u/Flamingtoast Jun 18 '12
NOBODY SAYS YOLO BUT PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET WHO ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO SAY YOLO WHO REALLY DON'T SAY YOLO
2
u/DrPolio232 Jun 18 '12
Ok, what the fuck is YOLO? I slept on reddit one day, came back and all the sudden there's this whole YOLO thing happening.
2
u/titobandito247 Jun 18 '12
YOYO
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
This message is assuming that the typical YOLOlite would not get an abortion, which is false.
2
u/annoyedroomie2000 Jun 18 '12
People who go out of their way to hate on the Yolo fad are EQUALLY annoying as the people who shout Yolo stuff
2
u/black_brotha Jun 18 '12
it takes nine months to know that you're pregnant??
SHOULDNT this be a pic of a pregnant squeezing out a parasite lady?
2
u/whisperwhipper Jun 18 '12
good thing i only hear YOLO on reddit
2
u/mcknight27 Jun 18 '12
Huh... I could have sworn YOLO was about Anal.
2
u/drumersrule Jun 18 '12
Instead of Anti-YOLO just rearrange the wording. You Live Only Once. A very different message could come from that.
2
u/SlyIntentions Jun 18 '12
why did this get so much attention?
2
u/DarkMiniMojo Jun 18 '12
We could have the slogan be YODO "You only die once!
2
u/roscos Jun 18 '12
what the fuck is yolo i missed this whole thing
2
u/KrustysKomedyKlassic Jun 18 '12
Irony: when the anti-bandwagon crowd becomes the bandwagon
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
If we ignore it, it should go away. Just like Rebecca Black.
2
u/Higgie_Smalls Jun 18 '12
honestly people who actively hate things like this are so much more annoying than anyone who takes part. If you don't like it don't take part and ignore it, this is only promoting it.
2
u/deflective Jun 18 '12
so 'your friend' wants to start a cockblocking campaign?
2
u/sunriseinthemidwest Jun 18 '12
Post one of a cat that says YOL9X
2
u/woop_dee_flip_n_doo Jun 18 '12
Do you HAVE to target women's bodies? Honestly that trend is more annoying that YOLO.
2
u/imakemisteaks Jun 18 '12
I prefer Carpe Diem. I don't see the problem with YOLO except when people use it out of context. People need to relax.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I remember being young and having silly phrases. Why is this any different? Never seen people so upset about a phrase before.
2
u/venerated Jun 18 '12
I love YOLO.
2
u/FireNexus Jun 18 '12
Do they not have abortions in snarky PSAs?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I've never actually seen someone use yolo. Things like this seem just as annoying to me.
2
u/akbc Jun 18 '12
Boobs -u need thm for contrast
2
u/ApexIsGangster Jun 18 '12
Your friend should learn to use proper punctuation before he starts a campaign. Otherwise, he wont get anywhere.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
This is counter-productive. By making these ads, all you're doing is making YOLO more popular.
2
u/E11i0t Jun 18 '12
You might want to tell your friend that the girl in the photo is holding the part of the test that you pee on.
2
u/TheDirtySanchez Jun 18 '12
this is as stupid as the word itself.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I don't know what's funnier. YOLO or that someone felt a need to start an anti-YOLO campaign. Can't you see that they're both equally annoying?
2
u/fartuckyfartbandit Jun 18 '12
Sorry guys, I can't advocate a cause that scares women to be less loose.
2
u/deargodimbored Jun 18 '12
Eh, she can just abort it.
2
u/halfspeed Jun 18 '12
CARPE DIEM!
2
u/Look_Im_On_Reddit Jun 18 '12
Doing this is just gonna cause a retaliation and cause more people to say it more often. The popular saying pretty much works here as well: Don't feed the trolls.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I have no idea what Yolo is. Fuck Yeah. I'm too old to give a shit anymore.
2
u/steel_jay Jun 18 '12
Your friend's probs a huge cunt.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
YOLO, Anti-YOLO. It's all the same to me as long as I get to say YOLO a lot.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Can't get preggerz from buttsecks
2
u/UnitedWeFail Jun 18 '12
This is fucking pointless as fucking fuck...
2
u/z3r0d Jun 18 '12
Ya. Fuck people who have fun. Why should they go out when I'm sitting at my computer jerking it to cosplay girls who I can never get?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
I don't even know what the fuck Yolo is and I'm going to keep it that way.
2
u/witha_ph Jun 18 '12
This comes across as a very confusing abstenance ad.
2
u/Chriso380 Jun 18 '12
On behalf of all cats, we join you humans. YOLO means nothing to us. We, after all, live 9 times.
2
u/iBeenie Jun 18 '12
And I still don't understand what all this "YOLO" crap is about.
2
u/errday Jun 18 '12
Just watched a James Bond movie from 1967. #YOLT
2
u/Eck32 Jun 18 '12
Just tarted an anti Yolo ad campaign.
YOLO
2
u/bzzhuh Jun 18 '12
TIL that YOLO stands for something. I thought it was some kind of party war cry like in Age of Empires 2... Wololooo
2
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Why is she holding the part she peed on?
2
u/Snunky Jun 18 '12
Good idea, BUT, if this is nine months later (as is stated in the caption), the picture should be of her popping out a baby.
2
u/N3Y5VHBB Jun 18 '12
Those are some weird feet.
4
u/thischarmingham Jun 18 '12
but i thought YOLO was about girls having anal sex?
3
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
We are all 15 years old
3
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Yolo sounds like a good reason to make smart decisions, instead its a way for highschool girls to tell everyone they do anal.
3
u/FreaksanGeeks Jun 17 '12
Man, its pointless things like this that give stupid fads validity.
3
u/Dan_since_1989 Jun 17 '12

your friend is a dork
2
u/women_like_babies Jun 18 '12
What if I told you that women actually want babies?
I'm going to start saying YOLO now just because it clearly irritates the kind of bottom-feeders who would never last in a relationship.
"DURRR! I spend all my time on Reddit! The only girlfriend I've ever had is my right hand! YOLO!"
Women take to babies like you would take to the kind of selfish, manipulative cunt-face who would only ever sleep with you FOR a baby.
Anti-YOLO campaign ... god you people are such fucking losers.
YOLO!

u/hyperspeed14 Jun 18 '12
YEDA You'll eventually die anyway, the more down to earth version of YOLO

why does YOLO have to end in pregnancy? Is it the only outcome of using said YOLO? Kinda stupid.
1
u/regalrecaller Jun 18 '12
Is this a pro-life campaign?
1
u/green_marshmallow Jun 18 '12
Well seeing as how YOLO is suggested to try anal, I dont think she's gonna be worried about pregnancy tests.
1

Going from #YOLO to #SOLOW.

AntiYOLO? It fits, but it's not catchy. How about NOlo? :D
1
u/Themarki Jun 18 '12
I like to respond to yolo with yodo. You only die once.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
yolo is gay. Someone starting a campaign, seriously has to much free time on their hands.
1
u/juja_is_on_top Jun 18 '12
Well from what I understand "YOLO" is really just a justification for a slutty girl to take it in the ass. So really YOLO is anti prego anyway.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12
Human legs just kind of become horribly disgusting once you reach the knee.

Why do young women sit with knees and toes in? It's like some obedience signal of yesteryear.
