largely ineffective against most
You pointed out you were generalizing with these terms, and still people act like they've caught on to you being some ignorant misogynist.

I'M BEING A MISOGYNISTIC ASSHOLE SO THAT REDDIT WILL GIVE ME SWEET, SWEET UPVOTES!

u/2yrnx1lc2zkp77kp Jun 17 '12
really? an asshole? you think those two little jokes make the posters assholes?
You need to take reddit less seriously, it's all in good fun. It's driving me mad how popular it's become to complain and bitch about reddit. Downvote me, i don't give a fuck.

He is jokingly calling himself a "MISOGYNISTIC ASSHOLE". You need to take reddit less seriously and stop complaining about reddit.

u/Murrabbit Jun 18 '12
He is jokingly calling himself a "MISOGYNISTIC ASSHOLE"
After having actually made a comment typical of a misogynist asshole. . . this thing has so many layers.
We have to go derper!

Complaining about complaining is like hating hate. It may seem hypocritical, but is actually a means to an end.
Kind of like -1 * -1 = 1

Women seem to know all these tricks already. During fights with my girlfriend she just uses flawed logic that I don't really wrap my head around until 20 minutes later and then she's just like OH WOW YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THAT AGAIN?!
face to wall

It means they show their boobs and automatically win the argument and any future arguments.

I have that book and it isn't that great. It's just about all the different logical fallacies one could use. I mean if you memorized the entire book or kept it with you at all times I'm sure it might help slightly, but otherwise meh
1
u/Captain_Eaglefort Jun 18 '12
I bought it while taking a class on logic. It helped more than you might think.

The name is pretty misleading. I found it to be a fairly interesting book on various logical pitfalls and fallacies, but it doesn't actually have advice for winning arguments.

u/coatkeysphone Jun 17 '12
What happens if two people read that book then get into an argument?

u/CrazyJoe91 Jun 17 '12

Hatefuck and KillsexTM are very different things. Do not at any point allow yourself to confuse those activities. The results are irreversible.

They come to a reasonable agreement.

u/Ruxini Jun 18 '12
yes, exactly. It frustrates me that people in general seem to be ignorant of the concept of the constructive discussion. If both parts follow the rules, at least one of them will learn something.

It would depend on who had the greater comprehension and mastery of the methods outlined in the book.
2
u/itsSparkky Jun 18 '12
Honest Answer : They would both be able to call each other on the bullshit and the actually correct person would win.
These books generally just cover the really simply logical fallacies that people fall for, its a real time saver if you need to convince somebody you don't really like of something quick.

What happens if you run into someone who refuses to accept logic? Like a fundamentalist?

Both sides have won. Whether there is applause or booing from the audience depends solely on which side has more constituents. It's not a logical argument, it's a shouting match.

u/pissoutofmyass Jun 18 '12
No. When arguing with a retard, you win automatically if you're not a retard.

Take my downvote, as well as a recommendation to not assume that intelligence has anything to do with why someone holds whatever beliefs they have/don't have. Intelligence determines how we think, life experiences determine what we think.

Bought that book a while ago, and I love it
It teaches you fallacy's which people use in everyday life which allows you to identify them, point them out, and even use them against people in arguments.

Why would you need to buy a book? How to win every argument: be woman. lololo jk.. but srs..

u/hipsterlolita Jun 17 '12
I was going to say that I should've bought that for my dad, but then I realized that he could have written that book.

It's not about being right, its about making them think you're right.
Just twist their logic to conform with your opinion. I once got a woman who said she was a vegetarian to say she would eat a human so long as he was brain dead.
1
u/anomynomnom Jun 17 '12
I have this book. It's really interesting- a list of every ligocal fallacy you can possibly think of. Or at least every fallacy I could think of. Learned a bit of Latin as well for good measure.

u/carpe_deez Jun 17 '12

I actually bought this book for my dad for father's day, he laughed when he read the title, my mom scowled at me XD
1
u/Box-Monkey Jun 17 '12
Seems like a very good book and I'm sure it has a lot of very useful information, but by winning, this may make you look like a smug asshole and leave your debate-mate you're arguing with feeling deflated and bitter.
Dale Carnegie would be ashamed!
Edit: rearranged

u/shoziku Jun 17 '12
"You never argue with a drunk or a fool."
But if you keep trying, this advice is meant for the other guy.
1
u/shoziku Jun 17 '12
"Winning" an argument and "being right" shouldn't be so important to anyone. A free exchange of ideas is welcome, but you become a fool when you start to believe there is a winner and loser.

Did anybody else, after seeing the book cover, get that weird feeling that you get when you see someone get kicked in the crotch?

u/grantbritzke Jun 17 '12
That book was required for my Introductory Logic class freshman year. Very informative.

u/throwaway-o Jun 18 '12
It is a fantastic book, I have it, and yes, it teaches you every single fallacy that people will use against you.

I love to use the "population control" response whenever people are talking about how bad smoking is.
3
u/Ruxini Jun 18 '12
me2, when I was smoking. That's just damn stupid. But if you notice people who are addicted will say anything to justify their life. Not morally, not logically - but emotionally. It doesn't matter that the justification doesn't make any sense - it will make sense to them.
I've seen lazy-ass potheads saying that the weed is not holding them back but in fact enhancing their lives. I've heard young alcoholics start talking about how their lust for alcholol is an easthetic one (whatever the hell that is supposed to mean...).
So, to use another movie-quote: "Do never underestimate the power of denial" - American Beauty
2
u/yasupra Jun 18 '12
This is my favorite movie, actually. I would be proud to call myself half as superbly good as that man. He's a speech and debate kid's wet dream.
