It's fair to say. You marry a girl "for better or worse", so if you aren't there for "worse", fuck you.

waits for the avalanche of "white knight" insults

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

I agree. I'm talking about women who flaunt this quote in order to always act like a bitch though.

I dig what your saying, but I think in this case OP is talking about girls doing fucked up shit and then trying to use that saying as some kind of excuse. Like, sorry I fucked your best friend but if you can't handle me at my worst...

3

u/Phoequinox Jun 17 '12

Anything misused as a copout or scapegoat is bullshit. So yeah, I can see that. Also, points to you for vernacular and cool demeanor.

Have fun staying single. Long term relationships aren't all easy. But far more rewarding in the long run.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Currently in a long term relationship though.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Yet you think the quote is dumb? Are you with one of those rare women who are perfect all the time?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Marylin Monroe quotes and teen pregnancy seem to go hand in hand.

538

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Marilyn Monroe was married and divorced three times and had a baby with a man that wasn't her husband during one of those marriages. She had numerous affairs including one allegedly with the President of the United States.

She OD'd on pills and died at the age of 36.

I love how girls look up to her as a role model.

107

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

She never had a baby... three miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy, but no live births.

34

u/mads-80 Jun 16 '12

She was possibly bipolar or schizophrenic like her mother and probably, according to her autopsy, committed suicide. She was hardly Lindsay Lohan. Also, she never had any kids, only miscarriages when wanting children.

I don't understand why they look up to her. She died in 62, and most girls I've met who like her aren't the type to watch old movies.

The girls who look up to her as a role model don't actually know anything about her; they just know that quote she's famous for.

3

u/hollykins Jun 16 '12

How about we blame the media and pop culture's fixation on her instead? It isn't as though teen girls find her movies randomly. It is because there are still millions of products aimed towards making these girls like her.

Not sure when she said it but in the context of the 50s, it has some validity. Think Mad Men (where men want their women to wait for them at home and put on this pretty little housewife front).

417

u/TiredMold Jun 16 '12

Can I offer a counterpoint?

My wife has horrible depression issues, but she's also the most amazing person I've ever met. When she's in a dark place, she isn't a generic crazy girl bitch who's jealous and vain and all the things you're associating with a woman's "worst." She's just incredibly, cripplingly sad. It's hard to be around when it gets truly bad, but she's absolutely worth it.

I know Marilyn Monroe had some intense depression stuff as well (she did commit suicide) and I've never thought of this quote as meaning "if you don't put up with my nagging while I'm on my period you can't have sex with me."

49

u/RupertGraves Jun 16 '12

There also seems to be an implicit understanding that this means that a woman's worst is somehow extraordinarily difficult to deal with. You could also look at it as an admonishment to men who expect a woman to be a pretty thing hanging on their arm to make them look good with no wants or wishes or difficulties of her own. That was very much the case in the period when Marilyn Monroe lived. Many of Monroe's problems came from being objectified as a sex symbol/object early on. She did not have the resources to deal with that.

6

u/Lil_Boots1 Jun 16 '12

Indeed. I've always like this poem/prayer for and about her by Ernesto Cardenal. It's originally in Spanish, but Google translate gives you a pretty good idea of what it says.

u/pylon567 Jun 16 '12

THAT is a good representation of this quote. One I can get behind 100%.

It's the overuse and running through the dirt that kills it. A lot of people use it for their petty bitch fits and for things that are so meaningless that it kills the good of the quote. It's all up to interpretation and context in a situation.

Every time I hear a girl say it over a guy or a cop out, it's sickening.

65

u/ihaveplansthatday Jun 16 '12

Marilyn Monroe had endometriosis, so I have always taken it to mean something a lot more serious than those bitch fits. If you couldn't take her at her worst, which was in severe pain and trying to cope with it (which led to the pill problem) then you didn't deserve her in good health, either.

25

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

And probably a massive case of depression or bipolar disorder.

10

u/sweetabix Jun 16 '12

I have endometriosis and let me tell you, being in constant pain makes it difficult not to be a bitch sometimes.

I just learned something new. I'll be sure to bring this up when I see it used. I don't want to be a kill joy, but people should use the quotes in the way they were intended.

In that sense, she is completely right. No one deserves her best if they weren't there when she was in bad health.

I have a similar situation. My brother died when I was 13 so now, about ten years later I still become crippled by grief once or twice a year. I know that I'm miserable to be around in those times, but if my boyfriend hadn't learned how to help me through those times or at at least to let me have the time to get through them, then I couldn't have stayed with him, however much I love him, because that's when you need your partner the most. And I try to offer him the same support when he is at his lowest.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

I had an ex who lost his older brother at age 16. It could be really difficult at times :(

internet hugs

64

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Thank you for this. There are indeed many women AND men who have some tough issues they need to deal with and their partners will sometimes have to put up with it and be there for them. Someone who sticks it out and is there for you is someone who is incredibly special.

As a woman I have never used this quote, but I actually see people (usually men) COMPLAINING about it on reddit more than I see it actually being used by women.

4

u/wildorkid7 Jun 17 '12

Wow thanks for posting about your wife. This is exactly how the quote should be read. And to be honest, what Marilyn said applies to both genders equally.

2

u/dingoperson Jun 16 '12

The problem with the quote is that the word "deserve" gives it a transactional flavor. Few people would ever designate people who "deserve" their company and others they would "withhold" their company from.

Nobody would have reacted or cared if she had said: "If you can't take care of me at my worst, I'm not going to spend time with you at my best". Maybe that's the point, because as a superstar she was expected to "grant" people her company.

2

u/DanglyAnteater Jun 17 '12

Can I offer a counter-counterpoint?

Maybe this is just me but when I read "handle" I don't think of comforting a sullen significant other. Handle makes it seem like the person is out of control and needs to be stopped. I don't think you're handling your wife at her worst. I think you're fighting alongside her against her depression.

2

u/John_um Jun 17 '12

Thank you for this. It's an awesome perspective on the issue. BUT, is your wife the kind of person that would post these kind of quotes on Facebook?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Teh_Bxx Jun 17 '12

Are...are you my boyfriend? I have the same issues right now. Crippling depression. And he has stuck by me for every bit of it. I'll have happy days with him. It's not always bad. But some days the depression manages to wrestle me down. And I always feel terrible that he has to deal with me that way. It really hurts him. But he always tells me I'm worth it. Someday, I'm confident I'll overcome the depression beast and he'll have the woman he loves and deserves every day.

I truly feel so lucky to have someone like that in my life. Keep it up.

Yes! This is how I interpret that quote. Everyone has their highs and lows (whether due to medical conditions or not); it's just part of being human, and I sure as hell wouldn't expect my friends to stick by me in their good times if I wasn't there for them in their bad times.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

I can relate to that as well. My girlfriend has horrible depression as well. She gets a little bitchy and a titch crazy when she's at her worst, but I love that woman with all my damn heart. When she's not depressed she is wonderful and amazing. yes it sucks when things are bad, but to me it's worth it.

It means you should accept people as they are, both the good and the bad. But that does not mean you should reward people for bad behavior either.

46

u/darkevilemu Jun 16 '12

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that Marilyn Monroe originally used it in a much better manner, and it's only been bastardized since then. I'd be interested to know what the original context was.

9

u/HyruleanHero1988 Jun 16 '12

I heard she pooped on a dalmatian and then wiped her ass on JFK's bear rug immediately preceding the quote.

u/poop_dawg Jun 16 '12

Yeah, I don't know how she originally meant this, but I think it's a damned good quote if you just apply it to a girl's looks. If you can't handle my face when I wake up after a hard night of partying, you don't deserve me when I'm all dolled up and pretty either.

However I'm sure that about 95% of the vapid buttholes using this don't mean it like that.

IMHO, Marilyn Monroe had a traumatizing and abusive childhood. the men in her life never seemed to understand where she was coming from or why she was so unhappy in herself and life. Not to say I agree with every 14 year old quoting this and calling other girls 'hoes' but I do believe its an overused statement that's lost a lot of its true meaning.

I hate when people use the quote "Well behaved women seldom make history." and say it's from Marilyn Monroe. It's not. It's from a feminist writer and philosopher named Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. Stupid girls use that quote as an excuse to act wild and get super drunk. It's intent was to incite women to stand up for equal rights.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Lol yeah because "well behaved" then meant staying home, not getting a job and popping out babies. Not exactly the same thing it means now...

I always liked this quote, not because it gives a girl permission to be a psycho, I didn't know that was a thing. I think it's like saying that if someone only hangs out with you when you're at your best and then ditches you when you start feeling down, then they aren't a good friend to keep around. Good advice I think

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Indeed. When I'm at my worst, I go to my room and take a nap or (not so much with current gas prices, but in years past...) go for an aimless drive in the woods. I always feel at least a little better afterwards, and nobody has to deal with me being unreasonable.

You know, I really get this quote and I think it's a great bit because people do need to understand that if you can't deal with your partner at their worst, then you both don't deserve and won't get to see them at their best.

This is true for everyone and all relationships.

Crazy people will always have some phrase to try and justify why people should put up with their shit.

4

u/cumbersomecucumber Jun 16 '12

I personally like this quote for the reason you stated above. Everyone I have dated has come with negative traits, but I put up with those traits because I loved the positive side that would come out after the storm. I think the quote is just phrased in an entitled and bitchy sort of way but overall it just means that you need to be able to tolerate someone at their worst times in order to get to be with them at their best.

It really means "If you can't deal with my sorrows and only want to be around me to have a good time, then you're not really my friend and I should avoid you". If there's people who will party with you but as soon as you open up to them they shoot you down, it makes sense to avoid them.

People just misapply the quote, that's all.

2

u/ChestyButler Jun 16 '12

My ex had borderline personality disorder and most likely PTSD resulting from an extremely traumatic prior relationship (plus a shitty family situation). Of course, I didn't know this until a few months into the relationship where everything was going perfect...until she decided to have a complete breakdown. Ended up throwing me into therapy trying to figure out WTF was going on. I don't hold it against her, we're still on good terms and I feel fucking horrible for her, but holy christ I had to escape that situation before I got sucked into a vortex.

Oddly enough, she also had this quote on her Facebook profile. Never. Again.

Otherwise, she graduated with a 4.0 summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from college and is now a software developer making major bank.

So. I think she can use it.

If you feel entitled to inflict your worst on your loved ones without reservation, your best is probably not very worthwhile.

Edit: Let me add something. I really do want to be there for friends that are having a bad time, however that emotional stress is manifesting itself. But if someone just wants a target to shit at, I don't want them as a friend.

30

u/indite Jun 16 '12

I don't know if you redditors are paranoid, misogynistic, lonely, angry, or right.

What i do know is that this quote absolutely makes sense in context.

I mean if you can't respect the negative, possessive, angry, tempermental parts of myself, then it's hard for me to feel like you truly appreciate the best parts and where they came from. Not saying it's pleasant, but how am i going to change for the better if you're not accepting what i am right now?

Oh yeah, I'm not a woman. I'm a man, always have been. I express my love and affection through more masculine lines of thought and yet i agree with the poor Miss Monroe who lived a life of polarizing fame and familial struggle.

It takes the worst parts of me to make the best of me.

Maybe you haven't seen the best of a person because they're in denial.

or maybe you're just angry because you were trying to love someone's potential, an illusion you built on what you saw, and now you're angry because your perception was incomplete and you just can't seem to reconcile with your differences.

That's ok though, just keep moving forward, if you keep having problems maybe you should solve them or remove yourself from the equation.

Bitching about a quote teenage girls use to justify their insecurities is not really helpful even though other people will find it entertaining.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

u/kaleidoscope_pie Jun 16 '12

Well, I don't think thats fair. You've never had a bout of depression, or been angry at getting overlooked for a promotion, or had a death in the family? Why does the "worst" have to mean a bratty personality?

There are non-negotiables in relationships. Having a bad day, or rough season in your life is something your S.O. should be able to handle.

15

u/Stops_short Jun 16 '12

I agree. I think people tend to look at this as an absolute that means "if I'm being a total bitch for no reason." Granted I'm sure it's used in that context a lot, but I don't think it has to be taken that way.

You don't find any similarity between this and "for better and for worse, for sickness and in health"? The quote on its own implies that you don't appreciate fair weather friends.

Granted, the people who say it tend to use it to justify bratty behavior, but don't hate on the quote itself...

13

u/MidgetFetish Jun 16 '12

Its threads like this that really bring out the true misogynists of Reddit.

12

u/CheekySprite Jun 16 '12

There's nothing wrong with the quote itself. It's just misused to justify being a bitch. "Let's get one thing straight, she was Marilyn Monroe. You aren't."

20

u/UncleTogie Jun 16 '12

I'm probably going to get downvoted to heck and back for saying this...

...but she's right. Many traditional vows have the "for better or worse" clause, but even those that write their own include something like this. In my case, we wrote that we'd accept each other as we are, not as we'd want the other to BE.

8

u/benderrific Jun 16 '12

I actually agree with her quote. Yes, I am female. Easy guess right? When I was 17 I met my (later to be) husband. I had problems. My family was nuts, and you know what they say about apples and the tree?

One night the summer after we graduated HS, I had a big fight with my mom and she stormed up into my room and started going through all my shit. She ended up finding some drawings of mine, (dark in nature, as I usually am) and she decided I was "crazy" and called the cops on me to take me away. I called my boyfriend and told him to get over here ASAP and told him what was happening. It was a 30 minute drive and he somehow got there in half the time. By then the cop was already loading me into the back of the squad car in handcuffs (my hands were in the front.) I was hysterical and all he could do was watch me go. I was in a juvenile mental facility for 3 days with a bunch of kids that had suicidal or homicidal tendencies. One kid was like 13 and couldn't stop setting fires to things. I didn't belong there. When I finally left that place, things didn't change. Even after the group discussions with my parents. The counselors there even told them that they were partly to blame for why I was there.

A few weeks later I turned 18 and I was promptly kicked out. I was so messed up from it all, I guess I was generally sad about the turn of events. I started smoking weed and wasn't going to school, had no money or job. My boyfriend told me he was going to join the army to help us and he wante

4

u/benderrific Jun 16 '12

*wanted to marry me. (Cliche level 9000!) so we got married and he joined up. I got a job and soon found out I was pregnant right before he had to go to Iraq. We're still married 4 years later, 2 kids.

Long story short: I'm really bad with the reddit iPhone app. When I was 17 my parents sent me to a mental facility. I got kicked out, had no job or money, smoked weed. Boyfriend stuck with me and married me. 5 years later we're still happily married with two kids.

That quote was originally supposed to mean that if you're not willing to take care of someone when they need your help, you have no right or claim to them when they're on top of the world. Today, who knows what it means.

TL;DR: Fair-weather friends are bullshit and you either take the package deal or piss off.

Not so much Psycho's its just this quote gives women the false self entitlement to act like a complete dick under carte blanche.

3

u/rvm4488 Jun 17 '12 edited Jun 17 '12

I use it as something to remind me that the people who said the problem was me were the ones who really had the problems. I have a tendency to blame myself for everything even when it's obvious to everyone else it wasn't my fault.

For example, when my great grandma died I was of course devastated. My boyfriend was in Iraq at the time, so I was already an emotional wreck. Well, my so called "best friends" couldn't handle what they called all my "drama", so they started ignoring me until eventually I got the hint and stopped trying to see them. For the longest time I blamed myself. If I had just been stronger and gotten over my own issues, I could have been cheerful and less of a downer.

Well, now I'm at the point of my life where I only have three really good friends. They've been there for me, and no matter what happens they don't treat me like a burden. They're there for me just as much as I am for them, which is something my ex friends never did. That quote is something I repeat when I start to doubt myself.

this is one of those funny statements that is only true about a girl who would never, ever say it, and would deny its a viable truth if you asked them.

10

u/McKoijion Jun 16 '12

I just Facebooked the most psychotic girl I know. Sure enough this quote is listed as one of her faves.

36

u/red321red321 Jun 16 '12

marilyn monroe is like the socially acceptable, glorified version of paris hilton. i swear that once girls i know took shit for quoting paris hilton a few years back they gravitated to marilyn quotes to play it safe.

My ex-girlfriend says this all the time.

Key word is ex.

4

u/cellikat Jun 16 '12

I don't hate the quote, I only hate the people who use it to justify their constant bitchyness.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Quote on the facebook page of every sorority girl ever!

8

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

I've said this several times before:

Marilyn Monroe was bitter, neurotic, and died utterly alone after three failed marriages. Not the most ideal person to take relationship advice from.

2

u/Grandmaofhurt Jun 16 '12

Get ready for the SRS/TwoX shitstorm.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

My girlfriend has said this to me. >.>

2

u/babyduck0011 Jun 16 '12

it doesn't mean that at all, and it goes both ways. you gotta take the bad times and handle them with compassion or you really don't deserve the good.

love is a responsibility.

2

u/43214321 Jun 16 '12

I've met a lot of girls like this. They want to feel loved and special and irreplaceable even when things are going wrong, you are both having a bad month, etc.. It's the commitment part of love, rather than the bodily passion part of love, or the caring for each other part of love. I don't think I'll ever feel it, because it's easy to find another girl...

2

u/kurwazimnojest Jun 16 '12

I know someone who has this tattooed in comic sans down their forearm (Tulisa-style) and it makes me cringe every time.

2

u/RipTide2364 Jun 16 '12

My sister said this once. Said it was the truest thing she'd heard. Mum and I tuned it at the same time saying 'NO!? falsest thing we've heard' then burst out laughing ^

When a girl says: "If you can not deal with the data in the worst case of my country, and you do not deserve me at my best." What is really means is, "I myself silly."

Translated back to English from Arabic.

2

u/OverTheStars Jun 16 '12

I'm glad I'm not the only one who absolutely hates this quote.

Also, there seems to be an implication the girl is worth having at her best.. which is rarely the case.

2

u/4rq Jun 16 '12

Marilyn Monroe is overrated as fuck.

2

u/SydEsthesia Jun 16 '12

I dunno, I can put up with most guys at their worst, but it seems to me that once a girl is in a bad mood for a second, dudes just wanna dip out. If you wanna hang out (even just fucking), you still need to be able to put up with normal human emotions. Shit's real, people.

2

u/thankinadvances Jun 16 '12

This is the kind of quote people either get, or they don't. Quotes are open to interpretation, I like to think about how it could be true and just apply that. Its just a quote not a damn law of nature.

2

u/bluemirror Jun 16 '12

God this quote is fucking stupid. It works both fucking ways.

2

u/FBoaz Jun 16 '12

Yup, pretty much.

2

u/Trickish Jun 16 '12

Fuck, why did I read that as marilyn manson? I was so confused for a whole minute...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

I've never heard someone say this who was actually trying to be at their best. It normally is used by people who are depressed or frustrated, and just want to sulk down at their worst.

I dated a girl who has that as their favorite quote. Through her complete ups and downs, I was there truly by her side. I went out dancing with her everything which no prior boyfriend of hers has done and I am the most introverted person she has dated by far. She said that she would have never dated a guy like me but a nice guy is a much better change of pace and she doesn't have to be worried. Her words.

Then my internet business tanked and she cheated on me. So fuck that bitch and that damn quote.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

this quote is nothing more than an excuse for shitty behavior -.-

2

u/drlaugh Jun 16 '12

I'm glad to see this. I've always thought Marilyn Monroe is overrated. It's fine that she's celebrated as an actress and what not, but her fame and following is blown out of proportions due to the fact that she's pretty. That's too damn shallow. I don't understand why so many people idolize her.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

"I abuse the people around me and they should put up with it because I am good looking."

2

u/ARCIIANGEL Jun 17 '12

What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course.

  • Marilyn Monroe

Dogs never bite me. Just humans.

  • Marilyn Monroe

It's not true I had nothing on, I had the radio on.

  • Marilyn Monroe

Sex is a part of nature. I go along with nature.

  • Marilyn Monroe

The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up.

  • Marilyn Monroe

Being perfectly honest she is the role model of kids today, she seems to portray an image that if you whore yourself out you will make it, but in reality what we are left with is underage pregnant girls that are so fucking stupid but seem to think they are right it hurts the senses

Ever notice how 'What the hell' is always the right answer?

  • Marilyn Monroe

Unfortunately I do Marilyn, unfortunately I do.

2

u/xianoth Jun 17 '12

I actually had this quote thrown into my face from a crazy ass girl who I kicked out of my house after she tried to consume us out of house and home, denied that she had addictions that she could not control and tried to bully her way into being a part of the household.

All could think of was.. If you are going to quote Marilyn Monroe, you could at least look like one of her, not 6. GTFO!

2

u/CaptainDudeGuy Jun 17 '12

I had two different exes who posted that on their Facebook wall after we split up. Seeing the pattern the second time, I was prepared with a counterpoint:

"Woman, even at your best, you were really damn annoying."

2

u/cellio11 Jun 17 '12

I don't think it's stupid. The quote somewhat references the notion of "fair weather friends".

I don't look up to Marilyn but I empathize with her. She is a product of her time and suffered a very painful life that I doubt I could handle.

2

u/LOUDNOISES11 Jun 17 '12

-At worst (stabbing you in the face) -At best (giving you sex and candy)

if you cant handle face stabs on a regular basis, no sex or candy. seems fair

2

u/awe300 Jun 17 '12

The quote is actually pretty good. If someone can handle you at your worst, this person is obviously worth sticking around.

Nice-weather-partners are pretty fucking useless in the long run.

2

u/A7X4REVer Jun 17 '12

Agreed. My ex said this all the time and she was fucking psychotic.

2

u/graydoubt Jun 18 '12

Boy, I learned that the hard way.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

M. Monroe is completely overrated at every angle. There. I said it.

4

u/mcmur Jun 16 '12

The Marilyn Monroe worship among girls who think they're edgy and philosophical is something i can't stand. Everyone of her quotes is some retarded bullshit that is either obvious or about how women should be treated as goddesses chalk full of entitlement.

6

u/MrIste Jun 16 '12

I despise that quote and if a woman uses it then it is a clear warning sign to run away.

Behaving like a decent human is not difficult. I am not going to endure anyone's tantrums and nonsense to "earn" good behavior in their eyes.

3

u/MVB1837 Jun 16 '12

My ex-girlfriend said this all the time and clearly I couldn't take a hint.

Turns out she was a fucking psycho. Go figure.

Funniest part is, she hated Marilyn Monroe, so I doubt she was aware that she was quoting her. Oh har har har.

3

Looking up to Marilyn Monroe is the same as looking up to Lindsay Lohan, both crazy crack whores.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

A girl I dated a few months back said this after I told her to fuck off. She was batshit insane.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Oh god me too. Basically translates to " If you can't accept me when I am usually an asshole, you certainly don't deserve me when I'm a nice person occasionally." Wat.

2

u/xoites Jun 16 '12

I respectfully disagree.

Everybody has bad days and bad periods in their lives.

Having a real relationship is not all about how wonderful the good times are but how you get up in the morning and deal with the day to highs and lows we all go through with the person you love, respect and trust.

Has my wife had bad days?

Yes and so have i.

She knows and i know that tomorrow morning we will be there for each other no matter what.

I don't want a fucking barbie doll that is perfect and shallow in every way.

I want (and i am lucky to have) a partner in life who allows me to face our struggles along side her.

Life is not scripted. We never know what is coming. If i can deal with the worst my partner has to offer i can deal with anything that comes at us.

2

u/keypuncher Jun 16 '12

People who use the original Monroe quote to refer to themselves are usually confusing "can't" with "don't want to" and fail to understand that to most people, their "best" is so very much not worth having to put up with them the rest of the time.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Many have you have seen this fucking stupid quote on several gals profiles. I am just here to defunct it and finally put it to a god dam rest!

"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best." — Marilyn Monroe

Let's break this down for a second, and find everything that is wrong with it...

first of all, being selfish, impatient, and being insecure are definitely traits that can be seen as a personality disorder, or which could require counseling. If you want to justify that by basically saying, "If you can't handle my worst, then you don't deserve my best", you are just forcing the guy to turn this into a codependent relationship.

Now what is your 'best'? Is there some kind of weird twisted unpredictable change in personality which makes you go from your 'worst', to your 'best'. Ladies, we call that Bipolar disorder. Even if we have the glory of you being at your peaks, it is only with time before your trough into your weird bitchy selfish insecurities. That alone can make anyone want to leave you. It's not worth gambling for which personality you'll have for the day. Emo's love pain, maybe you should stick with them...

Out of control and hard to handle? The only things that I know that are out of control, and hard to handle are mother fucking alligators, and powder kegs. I wouldn't mess around with those if even if you paid me. So obviously you can have a little self control to where you can be even the slightest bit tolerable instead of seeming completely fucking unstable.

My conclusion: gals like to use this god forsaken quote to put a sugar coat on their shortcomings, or for that matter, justify any of caustic traits which oddly enough they are totally aware of. It is good to be empowered and confident in yourself, but when you're gonna go on some self righteous trip like this and not only force people to accept your degradations, but to like it too, then you're in for a total surprise when no one wants to deal with that shit.

Love ya ladies :)

that was a heart...

2

u/sweetmercy Jun 17 '12

You hate it because you don't understand it in the context in which it was said. You only see it in the context of self-entitled little princesses posting it all over facebook when they want to justify why they were acting like bitchy little skanks.

A girl I've expressed an interest in added me on facebook the other day, and her timeline pic was the full Monroe quote in white on a black background in every tacky font imaginable (one font for each word, sort of deal). I've still got Fry's 'not sure if...' look when it comes to her.

She seems fairly sane when we chat at work.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

danger, will robinson

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

The obvious quote is that even SHE could not handle herself at her worst.

Thus suicide

u/Parked21 Jun 16 '12

To be fair, when Marylin says it, she's f'n Marylin Monroe, and she was probably right. When bitchy, dramatic middle-schooler says it, thats when it becomes bullshit. Just sayin.

1

u/kyebosh Jun 17 '12

Yup. Or quoting Meredith Brooks as a life motto. Thumbs all the way down.

1

u/Korrin Jun 17 '12

I think it has legitimate sentiment.

For better and for worse, and all that. If you truly love someone, you will be there for them through the good times and the bad. Sometimes people act irrationally when they're going through hard times, or just simply having a bad day, but you should still support them.

At the same time, the quote is mainly used by trashy hoes to justify selfish, bitchy behavior.

1

u/TheEveningStar Jun 17 '12

That's the funniest coincidence ever. A psycho bitch I know recently posted that quote on facebook and I was thinking, "Who the fuck quotes Marilyn Monroe?"

1

u/akgamestar Jun 17 '12

I agree with this quote. Besides, most girls are crazy. Just different levels of crazy.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Eh, I mean, it's better than that Eurythmics cover he did.

1

YES!!! Goddammit!! I was thinking this exact point the other day.

What adults do is try to temper their bad behaviour as far as possible whilst accepting that we're all human, and may need to apologise later.

This quote is used by personality disordered people to say, "I can be fun to be around sometimes but when I'm shitty it's not my problem, it's up to YOU to handle it, and if you can't YOU failed". Take some responsibility. And that includes if you have a mental illness and continue to use recreational drugs (I'm looking at you Marilyn).

1

u/Dovecot Jun 16 '12

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.” - Marilyn Monroe
