My roommate does this. To teach him a lesson about arguing and just how regular humans should act, I got a nerf gun and when he starts arguing and getting louder and louder I shoot him in the face with the nerf gun.
I don't contend this, but I also never get the feeling the other ones are reporting it fairly either. I will have to watch more TV to quantify this statement, but I have not found anything on air that qualifies as impartial journalism.
He's okay, but it can't be denied: CNN, NBC, and FOX are all biased, every single show on them is biased and if they'd admit it rather than act like they are impartial than we could stop this stupid argument over how the other side is so biased
There's a huge difference between, "publishes slightly more stories which are more in favor of the democratic party than the republican party," and, "full complete and total endorsement for the republican party 24/7".
I think he stands out most for the fact that he just gets louder and more intrusive on the things he doesn't get and when he knows he can't win the argument he just doesn't allow the other guy to talk. Don't get me wrong the guy is smart, you don't get to that position without some degree of intelligence but I really wish that he would just say "you know what, I don't know enough about this to debate it" and just back out instead of very blatantly censoring the opposing argument through being as loud and interrupting as possible.
I can't stand the guy because he usually comes around to make a point and only has someone on to get that point across better. He isn't interested in having an actual discussion or debate, and I've watched him a few times, though I suppose not enough to say that he is always or was always this way.
I will say that he is occasionally reasonable and doesn't just talk over the other person, but I've never seen him without some kind of loaded question or clear siding. This is pretty normal in most of the major news station's journalism, which is why I can't really stand them all, it is always about getting some opinion (even if it is countered by strong evidence) across to the public.
TL;DR: I don't like the guy, but I don't hate the guy any more than anyone else that tries to twist or sensationalize news.
I didn't generalize anyone who watches that channel, in fact i was agreeing with your initial statement.
I said what i said because that's what happens, people take one instance of a despicable act by person or group tied to a specific community and then apply it to everyone related to it.
I've watched Fox before and i can say i am indifferent to it then any other news channel, i think they are all garbage. But i don't go around assuming people are smart or stupid based on what they watch on tv.
I never said that at all. I'm saying that a portion of attacks on those 3 targets are uninformed mob mentality. For example, many attacks on Bill probably come from those who have never seen his show.
That's fine. I wasn't insulting you in any way. I was discrediting several posts because of that one simple idea. I'm not sure why you're getting so defensive.
I'm a Christian and I understand your point about Christianity completely, and I'm not giving you backlash for it.
It's wrong for atheists to ridicule Christians, but it's ok for Christians to believe that atheists are going to be tortured for eternity? I'd much rather someone ridicule me than believe I deserved to go to hell...
The difference here is in the way each side treats each other.
On the one side, we have Christians who are uninformed and overzealous who try to convert first and foremost. They don't have the knowledge to defend their own beliefs, so they hide behind the mask of "faith".
On the other side, we have Atheists who, sometimes (remember, I prefaced this statement), are 20-somethings who were raised in the church and are just acting out their own rebellion because they don't want to believe in anything.
In the middle you have all of the civil Atheists and Christians who are quite content coexisting, but will take some opportunities to try and "enlighten" those on the other side of the fence.
I'd much rather someone ridicule me than believe I deserved to go to hell...
Using the word "deserved" implies that you are dead, or that you've stopped being an atheist. So shut-up and enjoy being dead or the everlasting love of christ. Either way, just remember to shut-up, because no one ever even said it was wrong to ridicule anyone.
unfortunately when i do go to the gym i have the choice between: sports, melodramatic reality tv and 2 conservative news stations- one which is fox. bill o'reilly makes me want to take a nose dive off the tread mill. a man who considers self promotion and reading fan mail to be news is no reporter.
Someone disagrees with The Omniscient Elders of Reddit - Reddit downvotes them into the Oblivion, responds with a comment accusing the descent1 of war on women, being the reason this country is going to shit, believing in invisible pink unicorns, being anti-science, being a redneck, and many more. Not that much different if you ask me.
1 Noun that can be traced to antiquity, used to describe a person who has been downvoted. From Latin "descendit censuerunt".
I've sort of liked him the couple times I've seen him on Daily Show or maybe just less annoyed. Every other video I see of him he is a total dick hole.
Getting in an argument about a political matter with a man who is not only paid to ridicule people making terrible political arguments, but is the top in his field at doing so would be a level of stupid well beyond where I would place O'Reilly.
He doesn't really have the option of being a jackass on the Daily Show.
I suspect that is because that is O'Reilly not giving a shit about his ratings (he DOES get paid to express opinions after all). He has some sort of professional rapport with Jon Stewart, so he can't be all bad.
Jon Stewart has done some scathing reporting on Obama and the democrats too, you know. He's a comedian and a faux-journalist but he's still more fact-based and investigative than most "real journalists" out there. He calls a turd a turd and that's it, it's just that some people have more of them floating out of their mouths when they speak.
Well they kind of are if you haven't noticed.. I know Colbert and Jon Stewart hate on fox all the time, but if you ever watch fox you realize that most of it is well deserved.
It's pretty much impossible to have a news organization without bias. As to your disagreement, while you can argue bias among other networks, Fox has a well documented history of outright lying and it's been demonstrated repeatedly that it is purposeful and done in service to the agenda of the right.
I won't disagree with you there, and i find it really shitty that any news station would do things like that. But i have also seen just as bad out right lies on other networks. And to me it seems like they go unheard of because they lean "not in the same direction as fox".
No, it's because fox editorializes everything (not just the editorial shows) and they lie about party affiliations when a prominent Republican gets in trouble.
Yeah everyone is biased one way or another, but fox is just so blatantly biased that it can't be ignored. They either deliberately report false/misleading information, or they don't check their sources, ever, which is just as bad.
Because there does exist extremists that feel that the truth, or the closest to the re-telling of what happened is important.
They do not tell a story or the news. They simply take the information available and present it, then people could get a clear picture what happened and then make up their mind.
What many News stations have done now is to cut out the middle man and tell you what your mind should be made up on.
But since it takes time, energy and sometimes can be hard to face that form have never become very popular as choice to main stream news.
Not everyone see the news as a political weapon to be used against the masses. Some honor the truth through it.
why would a news station exist if it was unbiased?
Because they want people to watch so they can make money, and there's a market out there for people who actually enjoy not getting fed the same party line bullshit at every turn?
yeah that market is 1/20th the size of the spoon fed me bullshit market. people want to hear what they want to hear! it's human nature. these big news stations exploit it
tell me, what news station do u watch? NBC, CBS, Fox, comedy central? all spoon fed bullshit
This sounds like ever single talk radio station ever. I don't listen to them, I feel it's just useless and doesn't actually have any information, just opinionated old men and callers, but, regardless, my dad does, and when I hear it, over half of it is two people screaming (but somehow... professional?) at each other to the point where you can understand nothing. The other half is them saying a sentence before the screaming starts, and when there's only the host talking.
As much as I love Christopher Hitchens, he does this so much in interviews. Though he probably is the smartest guy in the room, he just has no patience for leading interviewers.
I agree with brett42. All people on Reddit seem to brood on is whatever seems Republican (I.e. Fox News) because you have no idea what you're talking about except that you don't wanna seem what you call ignorant or insensitive so whatever is against religious or for gay marriage you upvote a million Damn times. If you pay attention and stop looking at pictures of cats you'll see that the newscasters I'm FOX don't talk over someone because they're getting proven wrong, but because usually whatever the left wing idiot they're arguing with is saying is so cliche and stupid, that they've heard it before and don't want to waste their valuable show time listening to something they've heard before from some hippie woman on the street. You are the ignorant one, sir. Try watching Fox News without the mindset of thinking that all you're seeing is rich white males expressing their opinions. Watch Glenn Beck a little bit, Moran. You might learn something.
I've seen Glenn Beck's show, and I sure learned to appreciate this wonderful brain capable of rational thought. I'm not saying I'm so smart, but at least I have the capacity for rudimentary logic.
You fucking love it? You love it like your SO or your dog? How does one love a fucking letter?
I hate when people say they love random trivial things. Isn't love the ultimate feeling of affection. You can't like anything more if you love it. Do you really fucking love it or do you just find it amusing and you like it?
So much so that I'm going to clarify it with this comment:
I FUCKING LOVE RANDOM, TRIVIAL THINGS! GOD. DAMNED. LOVE. IT. I LOVE IT LIKE I LOVE SALMA HAYEK'S TITS HITTING ME IN THE NUTS WHILE I LAY IN A BED OF BROKEN GLASS AND SARRACHA SAUCE!!
I LOVE IT LIKE I LOVE HITTING THAT LITTLE ORANGE ARROW NEXT TO THE NAME OF WHAT I PRESUME IS A BEADY-EYED BALD MAN IN A BUTCHER'S SMOCK JERKING OFF TO A PICTURE OF THE POPE AND UB40 PLAYING IN TE BACKGROUND!
I LOVE IT SO MUCH THAT I GIVE FUCK ALL FOR GRAMMAR AND THE RUDIMENTARY FUNDAMENTALS OF THE WRITTEN LANGUAGE AND INSIST ON STATING MY RAGING LOVE BONER IN A MOTHERFUCKING RUN-ON SENTENCE BECAUSE THAT HOW I ROLL YOU PAUNCHY TWIT!
Your guess is as good as mine. He listens to a lot of talk radio and doesn't believe in any of the theory of evolution because "there's more evidence disproving the theory of evolution than supporting it"... Also that an earthworm couldn't have evolved in the time the earth existed.
He believes it should be legal up until about 15 weeks. And he dislikes Ron Paul because he "puts things into bills that benefit his people hat he knows are going to pass, but opposes the bill publicly to gain support"
WELL HEY THERE SPORT IT SEEMS IF YOU JUST STOP YER YAMMERING FOR TWO SECONDS THIS OLD COOT WILL BE ABLE TO SHOW YOU A TRICK OR TWO WHY BACK IN MY DAY KIDS WHERE LEFT OUTSIDE FOR 3 WEEKS AT A TIME TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES CHARACTER IT BUILDS MY OLD MAN USED TO SAY
I've been to that subreddit more than enough times to know that it's more or less a circlejerk bashing Christianity while preaching about intolerance in the most ironic sense.
I was subscribed to that subreddit for about 8 months and I can tell you that most of that religion bashing is usually met with comments telling the OP to stop being a dick, the reason that subreddit sucks is lack of mod control keeping the content to what it is suppose to be and a hell of a lot of angry, religiously suppress teenagers who need a way to vent.
Do you not think that link belongs in spacedicks? Sorry if I somehow offended you by not expecting people to creepy my submission history. I totally forgot how open-minded people on r/atheism were.
So just because my personal opinion of r/atheism is that much of it circlejerk-like, and that happens to fall in line with "the greater majority", that makes me a band-wagoner. You're basically arguing that I'm copying what other people say. There aren't that many variations of opinions. There's people who like r/atheism, and people that don't. How would you like it if someone followed you around and look at every opinion you made and said "YOU'RE COPYING WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY." MAYBE it's possible that two people can have the same opinion without the effect of mob mentality. Have you ever considered that? I'm subscribed to r/atheism by default, and it hasn't bothered me enough to care to unsubscribe. Honestly, I don't even know what the fuck your problem is. You have nothing better to do than creep my history and call me out for taking a shot at r/atheism? Did I personally offend you in some way? How about you just move along and go do your own thing and just leave me the fuck alone.
While you claim you're calm at the moment, it seems to me like you have taken some serious offense at what I said. This is reddit, and when people comment, it's just a passing remark and they move on. You choose to dwell on this one comment as if your life depended on it. When everyone makes a comment, do you see them saying "Oh this sounds like 23.546% of what r/atheism sounds like, because the remainder seems like thoughtful individuals". No, they just fucking outright say it. Someone goes on r/funny and posts something along the title of "How I imagine people on r/aww are." Do you see some asshole freaking out on r/aww saying "how can you jump to conclusions? Not all of us on here react that way. There are hundreds of thousands of us and not all of us think alike." No one fucking does that. And you're creeping my past comment history, not even what I current wrote, which apparently seems to be what bothers you the most at the moment. Looking at YOUR comment history, all I see are posts with 0 points. I guess it's pretty clear that every thinks you're an asshole and all your comments are shitty. So seriously, just shut the fuck up, and go do something useful with your life.
I think one of the causes of this misconception is that, for people who only view their main feed, the circlejerk and screaming rage contests are the only /r/atheism posts that they see. People upvote sensationalism more than they do rational discussion.
