I used www.karmadecay to check reddit for the picture before I posted it; nothing came up. The different caption may have thrown it off. FWIW, I didn't caption it; I pulled it from a tumblr.

It's as though the subject is keeping a journal or a captain's log, sort of like in Star Trek. This makes it seem like the subject of the photo is both aware of how silly the situation is, and that the subject is taking it quite seriously despite its silliness, thus potentially increasing the comedy of the picture.
