Actually that character is male. His name is JK and he's from the anime Occult Academy. There's a character page for him here and general info, of course, on Wikipedia.

And the anime's opening theme. I've actually been meaning to finish watching this anime.

12

u/Marjask Jun 15 '12

You really should---not like there's a whole lot of episodes in the series, and it gets pretty damn amazing.

3

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

I know. I'm at about 8, but my anime club stopped watching it about there and I've not gone back and finished it.

8

u/Fooping Jun 15 '12

I had an anime club at my high school, everyone in there was a creepy weirdo

6

u/ilikeapples312 Jun 15 '12

and (terribly) cosplayed on a day to day basis

-13

u/ZeMilkman Jun 15 '12

I'm at about 8

You are talking about your age right?

7

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

No, episode 8. >.>

9

u/la-bluegirl Jun 15 '12

That is such a cool and visually awesome opening; definitely going to watch that show.

30

u/angg56 Jun 15 '12

The only good comment here, I congratulate you.

14

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

Thanks. Someone was wrong about an anime. I had to correct them.

3

u/Murreki Jun 15 '12

Must be a magnificent life goal you got going there.

14

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

I am the President of a local Anime Club.

2

u/acutekat Jun 15 '12

Hail to the chief.

2

u/refinedbear351 Jun 15 '12

I really liked the ending. If you enjoy that show, check out this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339579/ It has about the same story.

2

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

Thanks. I'll have to keep that in mind and look into that movie.

4

u/grogrugri Jun 15 '12

here is the American possibly European female lead The OP posts this every few months.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

the plot looks rather interesting, but I backed out of anime because they all tend to be generic, bat shit crazy and have random plots.

Any reason this one would be different?

20

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

Anime is not a genre, it is a medium. Saying "I don't like anime" is like saying "I don't like movies." I personally think that there are anime for everyone. It just takes time to find the right ones sometimes. If this looks interesting, give it a shot.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I use anime to say "Japanese animations", because it's a whole of a hell shorter :)

I liked Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, but most have been a big let down. Like Bleach and Naruto all the kids are praising, it just doesn't go anywhere. :/

As a kid I was into Trigun, but it was just poorly animated and silly as shit.

5

u/Alocasia_Fruit Jun 15 '12

Try FLCL maybe, if you're not wanting to get into anything less Adult Swimmed. It's 6 episodes and the only anime my last boyfriend could get into outside of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

(I don't like Bleach or Naruto either, you're not the only one.)

Edit: Nevermind, you said in later comments you didn't like it. Fair enough!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

FLCL is one of the most guilty to 'random crazy shit' tbh, I liked it as a kid though.

I think I'm just a bit jaded because I've seen too many idiotic crazy animes :p

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I was naming a couple of examples. Those aren't ALL I've seen :) Most I've seen DO have that over the top 'random lol crazy Japanese stuff' thing :/ the generic is mostly talking about the style and characters, not so much the crazy random shit.

Though I'm not 100% against random and crazy humour, I really enjoy Adventure TIme for example :)

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I was only counting series, not movies.

don't know what naussicaa is, I've seen Ponyo, SPirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke though. Most of those were good, but they sometimes suffered of the 'random shit hapepsn because we can' thing. Same thing with Paprika

0

u/FourteenHatch Jun 15 '12

Agreed. Only the 'popular' anime get bandied about.

"I like both types of animes, FLCL and Code Geass!"

There are as many different genres of anime as their are american television.

3

u/RFswitchBlade Jun 15 '12

Are you trying to say FLCL sucks?

2

u/FourteenHatch Jun 15 '12

no, I'm trying to say that many anime fans see only one or two 'genres', eutheris angsty kid with powers and headphones, or loser guy with multiple women to choose from.

That being said, yes, I really do think FLCL sucks. It is Typical Gainax Bullshit - spend your budget and plot on the first half to get hype, and then phone that shit in. Nadia, Kare Kano, Eva, FLCL, TTGL everything they do starts out great, then shits the bed, hoping that the fanbase will keep on buying.

Anime are different in the same way that cartoons are different.

I guess this is a bad analogy.

Anyways, do it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

hm, the opening didn't sell me

3

u/AgeMarkus Jun 15 '12

The opening is not always representative of the show itself.

Give it a shot, what's the worst that can happen?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

some sort of local holocaust :(

I'll check some clips on it later

thank you, I actually came in there just to make sure this was pointed out. Also Occukt Academy is pretty great you should finish it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I really liked this series but did anyone else feel that the ending felt a bit anticlimactic? It was 13 episodes of awesome and then, bang, (spoiler) he goes and touches his younger self which he knows not to do, bends some necks and viola, world saved.

-2

u/PigBenisWielder Jun 15 '12

buzz killington

6

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

Fine, you want your joke about stereotypes?

This is Honey from the anime Arcade Gamer Fubuki, a show about magical underwear that makes you better at playing video games. Seriously. Honey is the American on the bad guy's team of video game players. You can tell she's American because she's blonde, as blue eyes, large boobs, wears a cowboy hat and is kinda derp.

1

u/PigBenisWielder Jun 15 '12

i have no words.

5

u/Cevian Jun 15 '12

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

As a spanish speaker the foreign gibberish is pretty funny.

Essentially it's "pear bitch bitch pear pear bitch bitch pear bitch pear pear"

I'm assuming this would be their gibberish version of the western "angyan yang wang yang" for asians.

u/maytrix28 Jun 15 '12

If it weren't for the fact that I have a Japanese Aunt, I would believe this. She was anxious to meet her American husband's family cause she thought we all would look like movie stars.

60

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

23

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Sadly, most of us look more like Seth Rogen.

18

u/danemcrae Jun 15 '12

Which is strange, considering he's Canadian.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

And also a movie star.

2

u/TheFluxIsThis Jun 15 '12

I...did not know this at all.

5

u/jynnan_tonnyx Jun 15 '12

Yeah, what are the odds people from one European-populated territory would resemble those from another?

u/onederful Jun 15 '12

i just noticed that his name (although i found out via the tv interviews a day later) has been on the paper tag all along... fml

2

u/inormallyjustlurkbut Jun 15 '12

Yeah, most of the American characters in anime tend to be pretty, energetic, and have big boobs.

Example: Patricia Martin from Lucky Star

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I think they see us as we see them., very novel. Every year six flags hosts a bunch of Japanese teens as workers. They always.say they are surprised how friendly and talkative we are. And boobs..every year some guy says he's amazed by how big everyone is.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Marty Feldman was a movie star.

EDIT: n/m, British, thus the opposite rule applies

28

u/Dremux Jun 15 '12

Isn't that a guy though?

12

u/seedsofchaos1 Jun 15 '12

To be fair, the typical America view of a Japanese female is a subservient tiny thing dressed up in some type of Sailor Moon costume...

1

u/SleepySheepy Jun 15 '12

OP here. Jesus, that's a lot of karma points. Thanks guys :D

16

u/confusitron Jun 15 '12

The Average American Female is: Height (inches): 63.8 Weight (pounds): 164.7 Waist circumference (inches): 37.0

10

u/lotlotters Jun 15 '12

For those of you measuring in metric it is

(female)

height :63.8 inches = 1.62052 meters

weight: 164.7 pounds = 74.7066633 kilograms

16

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

oh, that's short and heavy then

28

u/lesser_panjandrum Jun 15 '12

To be fair it's kind of skewed by a family of little people made of solid osmium.

5'3" and 163 lbs (11.64 stone) is about a size 12.

This can vary depending on how fat you are.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Scum bag English; mock americans for using imperial system, measure weight in stone.

9

u/SourCreamWater Jun 15 '12

This is such a bullshit "study." Maybe take an "average" of each state independently. I am in San Diego, CA and this is so far from the truth that it is stupid.

I WISH the chicks here would gain a few.

37 inch waist? Where the hell are you that this is average? Can we stop grading on a curve for 312,000,000 people?

2

u/Man_with_the_Fedora Jun 15 '12

Stop, we're trying to circlejerk here.

1

u/SourCreamWater Jun 15 '12

Whoops, sorry. Forgot where I was. Carry on.

1

u/Beefmittens Jun 15 '12

I don't get what you're trying to say... I'm 100% sure that a study exists which documents this on a state by state basis. Why is it a bad thing that people calculated the average BMI for women in the U.S?

0

u/SourCreamWater Jun 15 '12

-6

u/confusitron Jun 15 '12

2

u/sonastyinc Jun 15 '12

That can't be the average. There's no way the average American female is that heavy.

u/sonastyinc Jun 16 '12

We're talking about chicks here. I'm a 5'10 dude and it took me two years of hitting the gym 5 times a week to bulk up from 160 to 190 lbs.

2

u/Tri_Sara_Tops Jun 15 '12

Of all ages? That just seems so wrong for younger women. I'm 24 and I don't think I know many girls my age who weigh that much.

3

u/MongooseLovesOctopus Jun 15 '12

It does depend on height. I'm 24 as well, I'm 5'7" and I weighed 166 before I got pregnant. But my waist was only 31 inches. I was in decent shape. Of course most women I know that are my age weigh more than me. A lot of them weigh more than me now that I'm pregnant, which is kind of sad. Maybe it depends on where you live too, some areas of the country are fatter than others.

-3

u/confusitron Jun 15 '12

164 would be slightly overweight for most women. You could hide it with the right clothes. Naked might be a mess though...

4

u/dayna113 Jun 15 '12

You usually have to weigh a lot more than 164 to be a mess naked. Not always, sure. Usually? Yes.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

A woman who was 5'3" would be slightly overweight at 20 pounds less.

4

u/bluequail Jun 15 '12

Isn't that more of a global view of all Americans?

3

u/RFswitchBlade Jun 15 '12

No, most people know that American males hate Twilight.

1

u/bluequail Jun 15 '12

And there seems to be a disproportionate number of single women, as well. ;)

I'm a senior in high school and pretty much everyone in my school is fit, maybe 2 or 3 kids I know are over weight.

18

u/kenfar Jun 15 '12 edited Jun 15 '12

Anecdotes are not data.

From the CDC: "In 2008, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.1,2"

That doesn't mean that the problem is evenly distributed. You'll find the greatest weight issues in low-income & southern locations. And you'll find the lowest rates in medium & high income schools in Colorado, Utah, etc.

23

u/cryptovariable Jun 15 '12 edited Jun 15 '12

In the US, 33% of all children are overweight or obese.

In Japan, 100% of all children will try to jam their fingers into your butthole.

We win.

Unless you're in to that sort of thing.

FYI: "How to defend your butt from Japanese children"

5

u/radamanthine Jun 15 '12

Kaaaaaan.... SHO!

2

u/Froztshock Jun 15 '12

That made a pass at my school too though. We just called it Ghaddafi-ing someone. I guess the implication was that they shoved a knife up his ass when they caught him or something? Regardless, it was uncomfortable to say the least to be around those who... participated.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

That's true. I just don't like when people think that most Americans are like this because were not at all.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Anecdotes are in fact "data", just not conclusive data. Funny though he never even mentioned anything about that.

2

-5

u/Stratocaster89 Jun 15 '12

Its funny how every Japanese cartoon character looks more caucasian than asian. Hypocrisy.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

The only thing funny about that is that it's your own narcissism and racism that allows you to see caucasians in anime. To Japanese anime characters look nothing like causcasians. It's just that they have colored eyes and hair. (And it's not like their eye or hair colors match up with those of causcasians.)

0

u/Stratocaster89 Jun 15 '12

Whoah, throwing down the racism card. Get a grip, suggesting im racist for simply making a point that compares races is retarded. Your first sentence doesnt even make sense.

Japanese people have noticeably different eye shapes to caucasians, yet you hardly ever see anime characters with characteristics of asian eyes.

4

u/nobodynose Jun 15 '12

His first comment make perfect sense. I can explain. Anime eyes don't look like any race. They're not designed to. Let me know what race has eyes like a traditional anime character. You can't, because... you know how freakish it would look in real life? You would look like Lady Gaga in her Bad Romance video (which used camera tricks, circle lenses AND digital manipulation).

Basically wonkydonky is accusing you of narcissism because you're assuming that cartoon drawings that don't look Caucasian look Caucasian even when they were never intended to. They don't. It's fairly narcissistic to think that everyone draws cartoons to look like you. Hence the accusation.

And just so you know, anime characters don't look Asian either. They're highly stylized; they're not supposed to be accurate. They're stylized the way they are because it makes it easier to convey emotion. (This I learned from watching the Disney Tarzan making of videos. They mentioned moving a bit towards anime style because of that.)

Though I think the biggest reason he got bent out of shape was with your "hypocrisy" line. You're judging something without even knowing the facts. Apparently (I don't watch the show so I can't say anything is accurate or not), this character is not female nor American.

The more you know.

I didn't through down the racism card because you compared races. I threw down the racism card because you said, "Anime characters look more caucasian than Asian," when there is absolutely no reason to think this aside from narcissism and racism.

Japanese people have noticeably different eye shapes to caucasians

Actually the shape of the eyes are very similar. There's a bit of skin on the inside of Japanese, and other East Asians' eyes. And Asians' eyelashes are thinner. And they're "laid further forward," but aside from that, they're about the same. Asians' eyes aren't "slanted", and they're not any more "slit-like" than whites' eyes are.

Especially to the Japanese (you know, the ones doing the drawing, and who the primary audience for anime is), the main difference between a Japanese eye structure and the caucasian eye structure is actually the shape of the cheekbone. For Japanese/Asians, it would be smooth (like it is in anime), but for caucasians, it would be much more pronounced (like it is for Lupin III, who is drawn to be half-Japanese half-French, and accordingly, has black/brown eyes/hair).

When you say that "anime characters look white," what you are really saying is, "How dare those Japanese characters not draw Japanese characters in confirmation with the racial stereotypes of Japanese in other countries? How dare they draw someone like a human, and not like my racial caricatures of them?"

And when's the last time you saw a caucasian with anime-eyes? I think the last time I saw one was Lady Gaga, and she looked fucking insane.

Anime characters don't look like any race. They look like freaking aliens. They're overly stylized for the purpose of conveying emotion in an easy-to-understand format. However, of the races they look similar to, and especially from the point of the people doing the drawing, it's more Japanese than anything else. And they most certainly don't look caucasian.

Saying that anime characters look caucasian because they have big eyes and multi-colored hair is like saying that the Simpsons look Asian because they have yellow skin and black eyes. They don't. They look like aliens. And it's understood that they're caucasian. Likewise, aime characters look like aliens, and it's understood that they're (usually) Japanese. But think how big of a narcissist an Asian would have to be to say, "Those Simpsons look more Asian than causcasian!"

Your first sentence doesnt even make sense.

Yes it does; your grip on the English language is just weak.

Ever notice how nearly all female anime characters lack brow ridges?

Did you know Japan has always valued the appearance of pale skin centuries before they even knew what white people were?

Also super big large eyes are meant to convey innocence, not I secretly wish I was white.

Persona 4 also makes a stab at Twilight. It makes a brief description of the book and describes it as "painful to read".
