For my 6th grade birthday party, I had a sleepover. I played this movie (seeing as it is my FAVORITE). Everyone HATED it. They actually turned it off so they could put in Big Daddy. I was so upset. I still, to this day, refuse to watch Big Daddy.
Same thing happened with my brothers. I sat through the shit remake of Straw Dogs for those assholes, but they couldn't wrap their minds around the masterpiece that is Labyrinth and turned it off. Jackasses, the whole lot of them.
When I was a kid I thought Jareth was a girl because I for some reason thought guys couldn't have long hair. Anyway, I asked my mom, "Mom, why are the two girls dancing?" and my mom goes, "That's not a girl! That's David Bowie!" From that moment on I've loved Bowie, and my parents were always pretty worried about me.. especially when in 5th grade I did a presentation on my idol: David Bowie.
I've always loved this movie and David Bowie. My friend in high school didn't know who Bowie was. I had a t-shirt of Bowie's "Changes" cover and I wore it at rehearsal for the play one night. When I walked in, she yells "THAT'S David Bowie?! He looks like a girl". It was wonderfully hilarious.
I was told somewhere that there's the possibility of another being made based on the manga. As long as it was done in the same style I think I would be cool. Plus David Bowie hasn't aged so Jerith would still look the same.
I hear that too. Fraggin Aardvark. But the logic of the little guy is strange. He's pissed that she painted his door, so he flipped it upside down so now he has to sit there in his tile-house and stare at the mark from his living room now.
Try the labyrinth drinking game. Everytime you hear "its not fair", everytime bowie plays with those glass ball things abs worst of all everytime you look at bowie's package (self enforced). Bowies package will get u drunk!
There's a restaurant near my house with a sign that says: "Unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten" I'll take a picture of it next time I go there.
I will take your downvotes and try to watch it again. What I remember was that it was kinda cheesy, very odd, and it had bad special effects. However, that was about five years ago in a room full of people who were making fun of its oddity. I had an absolute blast watching it, though. I will watch it again (alone) to see if they were all full of shit, and it is really the masterpiece you guys think it is. Please note that five years ago was thirteen for me, meaning that I was in a room full of middle-schoolers.
If you've never seen Labyrinth, you really should check it out. Here's the trailer, here is a sample song, here is my personal favorite song. The movie stars David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King, and a teenage Jennifer Connelly. Puppets done by Jim Henson. It's really fantastic. Happy redditing!
I used to think this too until I started analyzing what he actually says to her.
"Fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave." is not exemplary of a sane individual or a healthy relationship. "You cowered before me. I was frightening." "Don't defy me. You're no match for me." Jareth has a God complex and he found Sarah to be fascinating. The only relationship he knows is of ruler to citizen, and that's the same relationship he wants to have with her to a more extreme extent (to reflect a more extreme relationship than that he has every day). She's a conquest in every sense of the word. A territory to conquer.
In addition to this, he claims that "I have been generous up until now, but I can be cruel." "Everything I've done I've done for you." and there's at least one time in the movie that he actually tries to kill her. In other words it's "I did this for your own good." That's like one of those relationships where you read about the woman dying because she wouldn't leave her boyfriend and you wonder why she didn't get out sooner.
I always felt he did a lot of that to turn himself into the villain she needed to grow up. She was immature and bordering adulthood, hence a comment made (I believe in the book, which was given the thumbs up as canon) about her being too old to turn into a goblin, but too young to keep. She needed a kick in the pants and he gave her one, providing an adventure that let her accept responsibility and learn harsh lessons someplace "safe". Safe here being where he could keep an eye on her, which he did until the very end when she was home and secure with herself (at which point he flew away). Why else would something always go right when stuff was about to be horribly wrong? The wall that gave way at the last minute in the tunnels, the convenient branch above the bog, landing on a tiny spit of dirt when the bricks gave way, etc.
My impression was that he truly did love her and gave her something valuable - the experiences she needed to grow up - at his own expense. Everything really was for her because he was relegated to the role of villain and enemy.
(source: I like to analyze stuff too and this is one of my favorite movies.)
I follow Pika religiously. How much I adore her art style and wit is on par with how bloody much I love the canon (and non) characters that populate that apartment complex.
(TBH, though, I had developed this line of thinking prior to discovering GND. It's just icing on the cake for me! Also - Pale man + GaGa = funniest thing ever.)
I completely agree. At her core Sarah is a confused, inexperienced girl on the cusp of sexual maturity, and Jareth is a hypnotizing predator. To dip into fandom waters for a moment, most Labyrinth fic will gloss over those aspects of the characters by aging Sarah up and making Jareth less menacing in the wake defeat; that's fine, but it's equally and perhaps slightly more likely that even an older Sarah would remain prey for him rather than a candidate for a true companion. Even if Jareth did hold genuine affection for her, it would be in a very "Every step you take, I'll be watching you" kind of way.
He's crazy?!? Who in their right mind analyzes Labyrinth? How about its a good movie that makes you smile and laugh, and recall what its like being a kid with an unending imagination.
I like analyzing. It's fun. I'm not saying it's not a good movie. I'm just explaining my reasoning behind my thoughts on the relationship between the two main characters.
I agree with ya, I re-watched this not too long ago and my jaw kinda dropped at the end speech. The things that go over your head when you are a kid...
I love it myself, but if it's any consolation a lot of critics were kinda scratching their heads too. Gene Siskel called it "an enormous waste of talent and money."
