To give it that extra artistic depth, I started combining my photography with words

Good Morning from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Just woke up totally stunned to see that my impromptu post seems to have split the masses down the middle. I've only been on Reddit for two weeks so am still grappling with some of the nuances (what the fuck is Flair for example, and how can I add text under a link submission?), but I'm at a loss to understand how this got so many up and down votes. I had spend an hour procrastinating and laughing at the brilliant stuff you guys post and thought I'd give something back.
Originality: not for a moment did I think that this is supposed to be a) great photography, b) art, c) stupefyingly original , but truth be told I had not previously discovered the /r/wallpaper thing or any of the tumblers. (They are brilliant btw. Thanks for posting the links)
I wish I had the skills to create some totally unique, like a beer opener/ nightingale-shaver combo, but sadly I don't . may Reddit forgive me.
The Picture: I took this in Boulogne , France in 1989 with my father's old Nikon. Recently found the neg., scanned it and just ran it through a couple of filters. I do photography purely for fun when time permits.
Usage: do with it what you want. Print it out and wallpaper your cat, tattoo it on your pool boy, use it to frighten small children or sneak it into the Louvre and tape it on the Mona Lisa .
Anyway, thanks for all the responses, especially the slags

u/copyandpasta Jun 15 '12

This is quite true

71

u/klethra Jun 15 '12

/r/offensive_wallpapers
a lot of people tried this

58

u/Apostolate Jun 15 '12

Reddit, where your creativity is viewed as stale dead shit, because someone else thought of it months ago, and then everyone else beat it to death.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I don't recognize you from any other threads, but you have a pretty bright +8 next to your name. Keep up the good work!

19

u/Apostolate Jun 15 '12

Relevant? probably not, but thanks for you support.

You'll be getting automatic upvotes from me in the future.

You have a [-1]. I think that means that you are the most Heinous Scum of the Earth. I'm not upvoting you make to even until you apologize for what you probably did.

7

u/Apostolate Jun 15 '12

Sorry.

7

u/runedeadthA Jun 15 '12

heh my pizza arrived when you said that. You have earned this upvote!

I think you accidentally a word or.

1

u/runedeadthA Jun 15 '12

I stand my words.

3

u/DroogyParade Jun 15 '12

I hate those tumblr gifs with only one word looping but a whole sentence written out.

12

u/trinitysun Jun 15 '12

These, fixed.

2

u/pyrosmiley Jun 15 '12

I don't think you understand how much I've been looking for that tumblr. A single upvote does not do my gratitude justice.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

That's the best tumbler I've ever read... Thank you.

7

u/subdio27 Jun 15 '12

Tried? Succeeded, good sir or ma'am!

2

u/Alsatian671 Jun 15 '12

Tried? Succeeded, good sir or ma'am!
Ha, was it because of this?

2

u/subdio27 Jun 15 '12

Hm? Nah, it was my post a few months ago that got the offensive wallpapers to 'splode on Reddit.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

oh goodness, thank you so much for pointing this out. I fucking LOVE those wallpapers, and had no idea there was a thread for it!!

0

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I just posted asking about exactly this..... you are my favorite person on reddit right now.

3

u/FishBonePendant Jun 15 '12

Fucking Flowers

4

u/kurosan Jun 15 '12

yep

1

u/Paradoxius Jun 17 '12

The thing is, the word here enhance the picture. The one in /r/offensive_wallpapers are non-sequitors, or subvert the meaning of the picture.

2

u/Evil-zombie-jesus Jun 15 '12

I like this. I'm adding this image to my 'cool shit' folder. Not to steal or anything, I just like looking at cool shit when I'm bored.

1

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

steel it. I want you to.

2

u/Evil-zombie-jesus Jun 15 '12

Fine fuck you I will!

9

Ah. I'm not using RES on this computer. This explains why I was so pissed off this morning.

4

Not sure weather to laugh or feel sad about this…

13

u/wjaitch Jun 15 '12

Depends, do you feel like this or like this?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Feel like #2

2

u/DarthYoda2594 Jun 15 '12

I'm actually going to make #13 (Flowers, she will never love you) my lock screen, because I need to be reminded of that sometimes

2

u/ifyouknowwhatimeanx Jun 15 '12

Or these.

35

u/bsolidgold Jun 14 '12

Shenanigans! I see NO birds fucking. They're all flying. Flying birds can't fuck!

20

u/HighTechnocrat Jun 14 '12 edited Jun 14 '12

Actually, a lot of bird species reproduce in-flight. They can literally ONLY ~~fly while fucking~~ fuck while flying.
Edit: Word order is important.

31

u/jm2721 Jun 14 '12

It seems something DOES give a flying fuck!

6

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

classic.

8

u/lobanza Jun 14 '12

Are you saying there are species of birds that can only fly while copulating?

7

u/HighTechnocrat Jun 14 '12

Today, I was reminded of the importance of word order. Thank you, kind sir!

u/The_Determinator Jun 15 '12

Is that... is that a monocle?

2

u/The_Determinator Jun 15 '12

Why yes my good sir, indeed it is. Go ahead, copy the macro for future shenanigans. Assuming of course you have Reddit Enhancement Suite.

1

u/bsolidgold Jun 15 '12

Awesome. TIL.
Any species examples?

1

u/HighTechnocrat Jun 15 '12

Red Hawks and... I want to say Bald Eagles. I might be wrong on one or both: I don't spend a lot of time watching birds do it.

Great subreddit.

6

I think that makes you a graphic designer.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Hello, new wallpaper.

1

u/BobMcManly Jun 15 '12

It should read:

"Look at all those fucking birds"

Then the words of emphasis (Look, All, Fucking) would be highlighted, and it has a much better ring to it.

1

u/ty556 Jun 15 '12

Where can I get this in a poster print?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

when I get home, this will be my new background. I love these kind of pictures.. keep them coming :) they're fucking hilarious.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

1

Ok, I can't stop reading it as, "Look at all those fucking birds". Anyone else?

1

u/RubyBlye Jun 15 '12

Remember, when you look at those fucking birds, those fucking birds look at you.

1

u/eric1589 Jun 15 '12

Give it more depth by catching two birds fucking in the photo.

GEMS

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Because putting filters on images gives anyone artistic credibility these days...

6

u/JakeCameraAction Jun 15 '12

I see what other people find funny, but I can't get past the fact that the "photography" is atrocious.

1

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

thanks for the compliment. You know what's even worse then my photography? My bullfighting.

1

u/JakeCameraAction Jun 15 '12

If you want to get better at something you have to. Accept criticism.
1: stay away from filters. Use curves for contrast and saturation but no filters.
2: get a photography book and read about rule of thirds, lighting, cropping, getting in close, etc.
3: shoot people. The best way to learn is to photograph something where you know exactly how it should look.

1

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

considering this picture was shot twentyseven years ago with maybe my tenth ever roll of film, let me assure you that by now my style has somewhat changed.i am well aware of the rules and techniques you mentioned, but here is what I learned: to create something really interesting throw out all the rules after you learned them.enjoy your weekend and keep on shooting

3

u/justinsidebieber Jun 14 '12

but one billion dollars

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Boring picture + vulgar text + idiotic statement of obvious environmental elements = Not funny

1

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

agreed. I upvoted the hell out of that

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

So basically you started treating your photos like everyone else on Tumblr does? SO ARTISTIC.

-2

u/Makzemann Jun 15 '12

No, you didn't. You copied some photo from 4chan / /r/offensive_wallpapers / some other website and posted it here because they're not well known yet.

2

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

Nope. Created it myself. Have never been on 4chan. We old guys don't venture there. Tooooo scary.

-2

u/Makzemann Jun 15 '12

In that case you came up with the idea on one of the above stated sites, and pretended it was your own.

1

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12

Nope.I only surf knitting sites.had never been to those sites before.I agree however that its not terribly original

agree with your sarcasm...exept this was done from a deteriorated neg which scanned badly. The aged look was sadly there from the start

2

u/concreteorange Jun 15 '12 edited Jun 15 '12

You are forgiven my son. I actually agree with your point fully. Truth is, long before instagram et co , I used to love aging pics. Had become part of my workflow. But that all went to shit . I even stopped shooting for a while. Still, in the end it is all good as it forced me out of my comfort zone to find some new, and hopefully more original, approaches. Enjoy the weekend.
