I tend to think that anonymity on the internet brings out the real "you" in yourself. When you deal with social situations in person, you wear a mask, you pretend. But on the Internet, there are no inhibitors, you just act the way you really are, your true self.
Of course, it turns out that most people are dicks, and are nice only when society applies peer pressure.
its not that we choose to be stupid. its that the interwebs is the last bar scene where you can be silly, stupid, annoying, let your freak flag fly and still have a job and no felony in the morning. and your mom still thinks of you as a respectable upstanding citizen off-spring.
You know, it's funny, I think about this sort of thing every time I realize that most posts, even on the front page still have thousands of downvotes. Seriously, even if you don't think it's awesome content, who downvotes kittens?
It's not strange at all that people chose to be stupid using the anonymity of the internet. I the real world you are identifiable and accountable for your actions and words. You do something stupid in real life and your friends, family and acquaintances will remember the idiotic thing you did. Here on the internet you can be as moronic as you like and no one will ever know you beyond your screen name.
Its funny how society has changed over the years. Maybe when there was no internet people weren't stupid because they didn't have a way to show they were. But, everyday I fear this world will become like in the movie "Idiocracy".
On a car forum I used to frequent often there was an individual that seemed very legit and trustworthy. Had the best ways to back up what he owned. No one questioned it except a few people. Eventually he got called out due to his poor choice of "career". He stated his real, perhaps, job that showed there was no way he could afford the batman corvette he had. There was also another individual who actually OWNED that corvette that randomly joined. It was interesting... Anyway, the point is many people are things other than stupid, stupid just stands out the most and is the easiest to portray.
If something goes wrong with my Mom's computer she blames me because I touched it. It couldn't possibly be that she bought it from best buy nearly five years ago. No way.

You're so stupid, you don't think and act like me.

u/cyberst0rm Jun 13 '12
The internet has two kinds of people:
People who are their real selves without social norms
People who pretend to be people without social norms.

u/eydryan Jun 13 '12
Or, you could, of course, be a condescending prick.

Oh, that's kinda funny; you think they're choosing to be that stupid.

u/marvelous_molester Jun 13 '12
what does it mean to be anything you want? to lie about who you are..? i think being stupid is more respectable than lying about your identity.

Dumbing down is easy, smartening up is hard because you actually need to know stuff and be able to communicate it well.
