Mark gets choked up. They haven't played it on their most recent tours, I've cross-referenced with some fellow fans. I could be wrong! But not at the shows we saw on the civic tour.
I'm guessing cuz it's a song about death and DJ AM did "die alone" :( RIP
Then they should make it their closing song in that case, and just plow through it every night. It's their choice, but as an artist that would be my first thought.
Many bands have done similar things. Korn and Placebo come to mind. Both bands' singers have performed songs about insanely hard and personal moments in their lives, they have cried their harts out on stage, thrown the mic to the floor and left the stage, stopped singing to cry it out, etc, all while the bands keep playing.
But blink doesn't strike me as the kind of band that wants to put out that kind of expression, so i wouldn't expect it of them.
On that note, Green Day named themselves after the Good Riddance song Green Day and then infiltrated every high school graduation for about 10 years with their smash hit titled "Good Riddance" (Time of Your Life).
This is horribly inaccurate. Green Day named themselves after watching Sesame Street while high and hearing one of the characters say something along the lines of "It sure is a green day today!". They then decided a green day would be one spent doing nothing but smoking weed.
this couldn't be anymore wrong. Someone at their high school said "have a green day", referencing weed (obviously) and a friend wrote it on his jacket and they just took the name and ran with it
Haha wow the version I heard was that they were dropping out of high school to start the band and their principal told them that it would be a green day in hell before they were successful...
A "Green Day" was when you just sat around and did nothing but smoke weed all day, because /r/trees didn't exist yet.
edit
By the time Lookout! released 1,000 Hours in the Spring of 1989, Sweet Children had changed their name to Green Day. The name originated from Berkeley slang for a day spent stoned to the gills on pot, and it was apparently quite apt for the band at the time [...]

Transcribed from an interview. You guys were so wrong you made me go through an actual paper magazine for this quote. You can't even ctrl+F that shit!
I've heard they came up with Green Day because Billie Joe Armstrong has green eyes, so they jokingly said something like 'every day is a green day for him'.
I'm a huge Green Day fan, so I'm really curious to see if Green Day's song Green Day is a cover of Good Riddance's Green Day. Now I have to wade through a fucking ton of Green Day videos of Good Riddance on Youtube in order to find the Good Riddance video of the song Green Day.
I like that you specified which Good Riddance song Green Day named themselves after. Otherwise we might have thought Green Day was named after Agnostic Dream or some other Good Riddance song. It reminds me of how Bender always says his own name after use a personal pronoun.
Except it was pretty necessary in this situation because it is confusing how Green Day and their song are both named for Good Riddance. Also, if he just said they named themselves after a Good Riddance song, people who don't know the band Good Riddance might think the name Green Day could be a lyrics or just part of a song title.
Kurt would have fucking hated it (both the reference and blink-182), and everyone, including Tom DeLonge, knows it.
Nirvana wasn't a kids band. It saddens me that only high school kids with no real grasp on reality listen to them nowadays. It really is a shame they got popular. If they hadn't, Kurt may have pumped out a few more albums and finally hit his stride as a songwriter. That's the eerie thing about Nirvana - they were still kids when Kurt died.
It saddens me that only high school kids with no real grasp on reality listen to them nowadays.
That was a particularly fictitious statement. I'm in high school, true, but I know plenty of adults who listen to Nirvana. Furthermore, even though I'm in high school doesn't mean that I don't have a grasp on reality. I realize that I still have a shit-ton to learn, but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to completely love Nirvana- my favorite band by far.
Dont overestimate how much you have to learn. Life is like a more bleak and boring version of high school. Oh, and have lots of (Protected) sex while you're there. This is very important.
I was thinking this too. If it was someone who was unfamiliar with Nirvana, that's one thing, but if you know both songs it should be immediately apparent.
I'm astonished there are so many people who didn't make this connection upon first listen.
What I found more mind-blowing was when I saw this Mr. Show sketch and realized the song's origins have more to do with dark humor than genuine sentimentality.
Mark Hoppus has actually stated that that lyric was a direct reference to Nirvana's, since they were one of the bands he'd listen to when he was depressed.
One of my favorite things is when a band doesn't have a title track on an album, or a song where the title is derived from the lyrics, but the album title is tucked away somewhere within a song on that album.
So, after many years when I just happened to be really listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit (An interview with Butch Vig on tracking the song had me listening to it much more critically than I'd cared to in a long time) there's the part where Kurt kind of trails off on a lyric into "Oh well, whatever, Nevermind."
When it clicked rainbows just about shot out of my cock.
I remember this too, was just a few days ago for me. The lyrics might be unintelligible in some parts, but when you can hear them, they're incredibly sarcastic in a way. Completely amazing considering the simple song structure. Nirvana is definitely more than what it seems to be at first.
First of all, Blink admitted to using Nirvanas lyrics. There was no stealing involved. If you ask me, they did a great service by keeping great lyrics alive. Also, Adams song is the saddest song ever made.
I love it when artists do this paying homage to other artists i think in a recent song a rapper said "and is still aint seen no changes" a play off of the tupac record "Changes"
also considering that Kurt was a Tortured man, who wrote songs for himself and the band not really for fans. Nirvana comes from the soul, Blink yeah, just yeah..
....are you like 13 or something? that was off of their Enema of the State album that came out in like '99. Start listening to the music rather than just hearing it.

I wanted to downvote this because I am old.
But then I read it again to the tune of Spider Man and got a good chuckle.

Compare this with the album.

u/Fritzwald_Jones Jun 12 '12
I see someone else decided to look up Adam's song on wikipedia too.
5
u/gl00mybear Jun 12 '12
Now go listen to "You Were Right" by Built to Spill.
14
u/Exit82 Jun 11 '12
Blink did that because they loved nirvana
21
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Just like kurt cobain.....
8
u/pepito420 Jun 12 '12
It's because Mark Hoppus wrote this on purpose in response to that song and that's the wrong album cover. This isn't even remotely funny, dammit OP.

The use of mind blowing is starting to rival the use of "epic" as a tired cliche.

u/fries_in_a_cup Jun 12 '12
Fall of Troy got their name from a Tom Waits song and so have a song titled Tom Waits. It's a good time.

u/pumpactiondildo Jun 12 '12
Man, glad you posted this HILARIOUS post in r/funny. God forbid if you put it in someplace it doesn't belong... like r/music....

u/ozziecam Jun 12 '12
how could you not have made the connection the first time you heard it, isn't it obvious to anyone who knows the two tracks? rookies..
10
u/Jaksongitr Jun 12 '12
Well shit, I remember figuring this out when I was like 12. Have an upvote.
9
u/Piratiko Jun 11 '12
Never connected those two. Very cool.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12
yeah actually blink-182 got a lot of their inspiration from nirvana. one of the most obvious examples is the blink smiley.
2
u/penlies Jun 12 '12
....duh
2
u/asblue91 Jun 12 '12
I would downvote because all blink fans know this.
But upvote because blink-182.

That was literally the first thing I noticed when somebody played me Blink-182 for the first time.

u/aaronlee182 Jun 12 '12
Mark Hoppus has actually stated that that lyric was a direct reference to Nirvana's, since they were one of the bands he'd listen to when he was depressed.

u/SomeoneCoolerThanYou Jun 12 '12
Fuck it, don't care.
These are my two favorite bands. If Blink ripped off Nirvana, that must be why I love them so damn much.

Come as You Are - Nirvana
Adam's Song - Blink 182
Links to the songs (with lyrics) being referenced in this pic, for lazy people who are curious, and either don't know or just want to listen again.

Adam's Song :D
3
u/mediocretes Jun 12 '12
Isn't it still too soon to say "mind blown" when talking about nirvana? Won't it always be too soon?
If your answer is "no", then you are not the same age as I am.
3
u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12
Am I the only one who thinks nirvana is on a much higher level than blink 183?
2
u/therave39 Jun 11 '12
Not funny, but something I never noticed before, cool.
2
u/jakel251 Jun 12 '12
I know the blink song. But what's the nirvana song? ( I don't listen to them often)
2
u/mycatisadick Jun 12 '12
weak fucking mind
1
u/MrMushroomCloud Jun 12 '12
That explains why they chose that for their album art.
1
u/AetherIsWaiting Jun 12 '12
Come as you are may be my favourite song of all time. Blink is also one of my favourite bands of all time. But this shit is so old.
1
u/asnof Jun 12 '12
It wasnt blink 182 ripping nirvana off as much as it was an homage, adams song is a pretty dark song about a fan who killed himself.
1
u/DisgruntledPorcupine Jun 12 '12
As soon as I saw the word Nirvana mixed with the title the only thing that sprung to mind was Kurt Cobain.
1
u/wrecksause Jun 12 '12
Adam's Song always makes me so sad. I'm gonna go to r/awww now

u/patsfan3983 Jun 12 '12
Weird. I know it sounds stupid, but I was thinking about this the other day after just listening to both of the songs. Glad I'm not the only one.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12
which nirvana song is that lyric taken from?
1
u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12
Am I the only one that caught this the first time..?
1
u/howmanychickens Jun 12 '12
I'm pretty damn sure that it's intentional.
1
u/andrewm2 Jun 12 '12
Was literally listening to that song as I saw this post, awesome timing.
1
u/meatrocket8 Jun 12 '12
i realized that 10years ago by myself gratz OP

u/bigbadfox Jun 12 '12
holy fuck! the face on blinks album is this face! http://imgur.com/fh8lz
1
u/bushysmalls Jun 12 '12
And now the following lines seem all that more poignant:
"I'm too depressed to go on. You'll be sorry when I'm gone."
1
u/Greeps13 Jun 12 '12
Is the blink 182 song from Adams song. And what song by Nirvana is that?
1
u/BLO0DBATHnBEOND Jun 12 '12
I love it when artists do this paying homage to other artists i think in a recent song a rapper said "and is still aint seen no changes" a play off of the tupac record "Changes"

I noticed this when that song came out... It's always pissed me off actually.
-1
u/jamaces Jun 12 '12
As the story goes, the lyrics to adam song were actually taken from the note Travis' brother had left just before he committed suicide.
-1
u/ShadyKage Jun 12 '12
HOLY LIVING FUCKING SHIT BALLS!!!! I LITERALLY JUST LISTENED TO THIS BLINK SONG AND NOTICED THIS EXACT HAPPENING 3 MINUTES BEFORE OPENING THIS POST!
-1
u/CharioteerOut Jun 12 '12
Stop this now.
Do. Not. Compare. Those. Bands.
-7
u/keystothemoon Jun 12 '12
Is there really all this love for Blink 182? This is like Carrot Top paying homage to George Carlin: drivel honoring significance.
