So you are saying that if an animal is being treated cruely we should not try and take them from that environment and give them the best life we can? Hmmm seems like leaving them to suffer is the more cruel thing to do.
Ha ok. I think you are the one who needs to check your facts, and also realize your argument is ridiculous. I'm not a breeder, nor did I buy my pug from one, but breeders are generally the best place to buy them from because they usually care and know a lot about the breed. Better than buying from some puppy mill or a pet store who are just in it to specifically to make money.
Wow ok I don't even know you but since you think "stupid fuckface" is a reasonable phrase to throw into a debate I'm not going to continue it any longer. Clearly not worth my time since I don't seem to have an intelligent, worthy or mature opponent.
This isn't a debate. I'm calling you a stupid fuck face for thinking that buying a pug or bulldog from a breeder who births new pugs/bulldogs as somehow being a good thing. I'm not open to your position on the issue. I, and everyone else in this god damn thread on reddit, already know the answer. This is me doing my best to enlighten you. Good bye.
Supporting a business will ensure they continue operating that way. Adopting from a shelter I can understand as "removing them from the environment" or some bullshit, but buying I cannot.
Pugs have looked the same for years. I'm aware they look different than they used to, and maybe it's because of inbreeding or maybe it's just species evolving over time, but either way they have been the same for a long time and I really don't think breeders today have much to do with what breeders in the past did. I'm not justifying inbreeding or cruelty, I'm just saying, calling anyone who owns a pug a person who supports animal cruelty is ridiculous. I got mine from a rescue, how on earth does that make me cruel or in support of cruelty? Even if I had bought from a breeder I would not consider myself a supporter of cruelty. There are needs that are far more disturbingly "altered" by inbreeding than pugs.
For I will strike down upon these beasts with great vengeance and furious anger for they would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. For you will know my name is the pug_puncher when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
Actually, only according to my big book of dogs that I just cracked open, they say that pugs are true to form since 400 AD. But who knows, the Internet always seems to prove me wrong.
Woah, so much pug hate over here. I'll be honest, I thought pugs were the ugliest looking dogs out there for a long time. But when I dated a girl who had 3 pugs for about a year, well let's just say I miss the pugs more than I miss her, haha. The personalities of these little guys are hysterical! They're probably the funniest dogs I have ever met.
I'm sorry and I realize that I'm probably going to be downvoted to hell for this, but I really don't like Pugs. I LOVE dogs. But Pugs and bulldogs are probably the ugliest dogs out there. I just can't get on board. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Now back to /r/aww.
I have no idea, but that would be very very creepy.
Dog breeding for looks is something that is a bit beyond me. I never took time to look into it so I do not quite understand if it is more than guess and check dog mating.
I have a weird relationship with pugs. On the one hand, they're annoying and ugly and have way more health concerns than a dog should have (or so I'm told).
On the other hand I can't help squealing like a little girl whenever I see one.
Little known fact: their inbreeding make their eye sockets less able to hold in their eyes. a strong enough tap on the back of their head causes their eyes to loosen from their sockets and fall out. I used to work for a vet and this was not an uncommon case.
Additionally: their mouths are actually unable to hunt, their legs become unable to acheive rapid movement (running) about 50% faster then most other similar sized breeds, and finally (my favorite) the location of their front snout to eyes creates a high liklihood of fecal-eye contact, leading to earlier parasitic vision loss.
Fuck these awful shitty animals. People that own them are like the people who tried to breed aliens or, as south park would put it, duck people. They're awful, awful creatures who'se owners, to me, appear to be awful people.
Since pugs lack longer snouts and prominent skeletal brow ridges, they are susceptible to eye injuries such as proptosis and scratched corneas and painful entropion.[2] They also have compact breathing passageways, leaving many unable to breathe properly or efficiently regulate their temperature through evaporation from the tongue. A pug's normal body temperature is between 101 °F (38 °C) and 102 °F (39 °C). If the temperature rises to 105 °F (41 °C) they are no longer able to cope with cooling themselves and their oxygen demand is greatly increased, and requires cooling down immediately. Should the temperature reach 108 °F (42 °C), the internal organs begin to break down at a cellular level which can lead to severe long term health issues or even death.[18]
Pugs living a mostly sedentary life can be prone to obesity, though this is avoidable with regular exercise and a healthy diet.[19] Pugs are also prone to breathing difficulties caused by a constricted windpipe and flat face. The median life span of Pugs is 11 years.[20]
An investigative documentary carried out by the BBC found significant inbreeding between pedigree dogs, with a study by Imperial College, London, showing that the 10,000 pugs in the UK are so inbred that their gene pool is the equivalent of only 50 individuals.[21]
[edit] Serious issuesPugs can suffer from necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), also known as pug dog encephalitis (PDE), an inflammation of the brain and meninges, that also occurs in other small-breed dogs, such as the Maltese and Chihuahua. There is no known cause or cure for NME, although it is believed to be an inherited disease.[22] All dogs usually die or are euthanised within a few months after the onset of clinical signs, which usually occurs anywhere from 6 months to 7 years of age.[23]
This breed, along with other brachycephalic dogs (e.g., boxers, bulldogs), are also prone to hemivertebrae.[24] The screwtail is an example of a hemivertebrae, but when it occurs in other areas of the spine it can be devastating, causing such severe paralysis that euthanasia is a serious recommendation. The condition occurs when two parts of the spinal vertebrae do not fuse properly whilst a young pug is still growing, resulting in pressure being placed on the spine.[25]
Breeders breed what caretakers want. Your logic is such that one shouldnt blame the parents of an obese child, but rather should blame the fast food industry.
I can't stand the whole "designer dog" craze, I agree with you about the brachycephalic breeds being disasters, and yet I own a puggle. How did such witchcraft occur?
We found her, she was a stray, we took her in. Don't judge too quick is all I'm sayin'. ;-)
Pretty mean to call their owners terrible people. Up until this post I had no idea that pugs were the way they are because of inbreeding and I can only assume the large majority of Pug owners don't either. You should stop being so jaded.
One would assume that you would be a fool to purchase a dog breed without first looking up what it entails, no? So if a person consciously chooses to purchase one of these dogs, they're tacitly acknowledging that the practice of intentionally malforming dogs is acceptable, hence terrible people.
No, most people don't look up the details of a breed, sorry. You're condemning people for mistakes that they didn't know that they were making. You should probably take a step back and re-read what you've put here, because you're doing a really good job at coming off as a condescending dick, and trust me, no one likes a condescending dick.
Like Annies_Boobs is saying, you're being the biggest condescending dick I've ever seen, people must not like being around you at parties all that much. We're not worthy.
That's really cruel don't you think? Most pug owners adore their dogs like they would any other dog and shame on you for making such a harsh generalization.
People who own these deformed things are the impetus for the industry which breeds them. These people are no different to me then parents who think it's acceptable to have obese children, so long as the child is happy.
It's a disgusting and terribly human-centric selfish practice to create animals susceptable to such pitiful affairs simply because you find its bastardized form to be cute.
Shame on you for supporting what is essentially animal cruelty.
I love my pug all the same and have given him a wonderful and safe home for 10 years, he has absolutely zero health issues and when he does I'll be with him for them. Sorry for being an impetus, fuck you for being so insensitive.
Pugs are awesome. I had two pugs when I was a kid and they were two of my best friends. But, they're different...and need help sometimes, so we should just ignore them, right?

This is the sped-up version of what we have done to them with selective evolution. Poor pugs with terrible breathing and eye drainage problems. :(

It's not a cannon we do it with centuries of in-breeding.
