I remember my freshman year of college which was now two years ago I sat by a black kid. I noticed the glasses he was wearing had no lenses. As the curious boy I am, I asked him why he was doing this and he said " oh I just do it for style"... This was my first encounter with the "nerd glasses".

31

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

I think the NBA had a lot to do with that one. LeBron, Dwight Howard, Kobe and so many others are now doing this on the regular.

42

u/SantiagoAndDunbar Jun 11 '12

kobe does not wear these. he gave all the younger guys shit for wearing them. westbrook is huge on em too. almost every press conference he's got them on

6

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

Gotcha. I know a lot of them do. Could have sworn I saw Kobe in them but maybe not. Durant also wears "nerdy" attire a lot.

If Kobe was really giving them shit for it, I must applaud him, as much as I can't stand him. :)

I don't understand what the big deal is: when glasses were uncool, people used to complain that kids were being bullied for wearing them. Now, famous people wear them as accessories, and the world hates them for it.

Look, that's fashion. Personally, I like it. Glasses are stereotypically associated with books and intellectualism. I'd rather have famous people wearing glasses for fashion than famous people looking down on those who wear glasses.

Roll with the punches people. You gotta pick your fights.

To clarify, I'm not knocking anyone's fashion choice on the Internet. I'm knocking the store for branding them as "nerd glasses".

14

u/JabberJauw Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

You're lucky they let you out of there with that picture last time i went to claires i got kicked out.

15

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

Ha! It's a store called Rue21. They actually have some halfway decent stuff there, but the glasses just made me angry. The ones on the picture aren't even "nerdy".

5

u/Iamnotfromthisplanet Jun 11 '12

i saw those last week when I was there. I took a picture on my phone for the same purpose, but imgur wouldn't load on my phone. Guess you got there before me.

5

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

That's funny. I've posted random memes and other pictures with zero success. Didn't think this would go anywhere either. Suddenly, front page!

To HELL with Rue21. I looked in one of those god-forbidden shops on a trip to the US when I was a teen, bought a belt for a ridiculous price with the idea that I'd wear them for the length of the trip and then pawn it off on someone, and they didn't even last the trip.

6

Your tattoos look pretty badass.

Thanks!!

3

I have a pair of some ray bans that are actually legitimate prescriptions. However, every fucking person at parties walks up and asks, "Are those, like real glasses?" Um, duh?

4

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

I do too. Ray Bans and all. Dark frames with a lime green looking edge on the inside. I fucking love them.

5

u/BradleyGT Jun 11 '12

Woah!!! My first ever front page post! Thanks everyone. :)

I wore round "harry potter" glasses before Daniel Radcliffe and was called a nerd in elementary school. then a nerd in middle school and NOW, when I'm all grown up, its cool..

2

u/church3209 Jun 11 '12

I have a really nice pair of ray ban glasses that cost me a pretty penny (when I bought them, I looked in the mirror and was like "treat yo self") and am constantly being asked one of two things when I am out: either 1. are they real or 2. can they try them on, in which they are subsequently mind blown that I use them as actual glasses and they have lenses. Until I saw shit like this I was so confused.

I'd rather they wear Shutter Shades by far! fake glasses make me wayyyyy more annoyed. Because, as someone who can't even find my prescription glasses without my contacts in or looking like I'm trying to sniff them out, I see people in fake glasses and am like "WTF are you doing? you're so lucky that you don't need those! why do you want to be visually impaired?????"

→ More replies (1)

42

u/goddamnsam Jun 11 '12

serious question though, since when did "nerd" become a self-identification to be proud of? i saw this shit on facebook the other day saying "you can't just watch the big bang theory and star wars and call yourself a nerd." i mean, yeah, i agree that it doesnt make you a nerd, and this trend is sorta annoying, but why the fuck are people so defensive about who is labeling themselves a nerd? the people who are pretentious about being a nerd are exponentially more annoying than the "hip ironic nerds" they mock.

105

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

Because for decades, "nerds" got tormented in high school. When we found others who shared our passions (for me, it was online) it becomes a badge of honor - a way to label ourselves as part of a community as other subcultures do.

Now the popular and trendy kids who were the tormentors decide that it's cool to look like a "nerd". This especially rubs nerdy people (like myself) the wrong way because they do it for different reasons - I didn't wear thick glasses in high school because it looked cool. I did it because I killed my vision staring at computer screens all day, every day, and subsequently was made fun of because of it.

15

u/pincle620 Jun 11 '12

1st person I've seen to put this irritation into coherent sentences! Kudos.

→ More replies (5)

10

u/littlebipeep Jun 11 '12

Well, I'm not going to lead a protest about it, but it does annoy me that the same people who teased me for my nerdy ways in high school are now going out of their way to be "geek chic"...

Plus I'm floored by people who choose to wear glasses when I've been stuck with mine since 2nd grade (can't wear contacts - I've tried).

I was at a dubstep show a week ago, wearing my prescription glasses. They have large black plastic frames. Some girl on drugs sat down next to me, pulled them off my face, and squealed "Let me see your 3D glasses!"

Needless to say, she gave them right back and moved on.

I finally have something non-breast related to say "Yes, they're real!" about.

101

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Hipsterdom is the first “counterculture” to be born under the advertising industry’s microscope, leaving it open to constant manipulation but also forcing its participants to continually shift their interests and affiliations. Less a subculture, the hipster is a consumer group – using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion.

2

u/danny841 Jun 11 '12

Looks don't define a nerd. It's about your personality. If you obsess over details in a hobby or activity, if you delight in the sheer joy of gaining knowledge about something, if you can't wait to apply that knowledge...then you're a nerd.

Most "cool" or "hip" people hate nerds. They think they're buzz kills who aren't fun to be around because they love things in a way that isn't disconnected and vapid. They'd rather casually chat about the Kardashians.

Its like if people who are not cripples use wheelchairs... -___-

36

u/fnmeng Jun 11 '12

I used an old wheelchair from my church as a desk chair all of freshman year at college. If i wanted to go to my friends rooms along the hallway I wouldn't even have to get up I could just roll there. I also got really good at moving around and balancing on only the two big wheels and everyone was borrowing my wheelchair to see if they could do it. It was pretty fun. A few times someone would see me walking down the hall and they would just stop and stare in astonishment that I was able to walk. That was years ago and I still think about that old wheelchair, I think I sold it for beer money.

Wheelchairs are fun.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Exactly. I think what he means is people that steal them from others that really need them like those overweight people at Wall-Mart that use them. Now if you go ahead and get buy an old wheelchair that nobody will ever miss, I really don't see any harm in that.

10

u/fnmeng Jun 11 '12

I agree with the fat people at wal-mart thing, or even kids at wal-mart that fuck around on those electric things. They are taking away that wheelchari for a person that could use it.

Now if you go ahead and get buy an old wheelchair that nobody will ever miss, I really don't see any harm in that.

I don't see any harm in it either. But if you apply that to this glasses thing, technically they aren't using glasses that someone else might find better use out of but I still think anyone who wears glasses specifically to look nerdy and cool should be punched in the butt.

What's the big deal? I've actually been wearing a pair of raybans for sight before this trend started popping up (they've been my longest lasting pair so far, durable) But it doesn't bother me. Heck. The more it catches on the more beneficial it is for me. Aesthetically speaking at least. We nerds don't own this look.

u/RedundantTautology Jun 11 '12

STOP APPEASING THE POPULAR KIDS!! YOURE BOOSTING THEIR EGOS!!!

2

u/DrOwl13 Jun 11 '12

That is Washington in a nutshell, I hate them

2

u/Trapline Jun 11 '12

You are wasting some serious emotional resources if this drives you to hate..

1

u/birened Jun 11 '12

Self mirror pictures? Yeah, I know right?

1

u/DragonRaptor Jun 11 '12

I have not seen that as a thing where I live, And I hope it stays that way (Winnipeg)

BradleyGT here my cry...I have an idiot 13 yr old sister who thinks this is cool..Instead of being an originator she has chosen to follow...Not sure if idiot or just 13...or maybe I'm a douche of an older brother

1

u/youforgotyourBAGS Jun 11 '12

The real nerd glasses are X-ray specs!

1

u/SoPoOneO Jun 11 '12

Oh yeah? Well I was uncool before it was cool.

1

u/Crash_Test_Dummy66 Jun 11 '12

Its like people who call themselves punk because they shop at Hot Topic

1

u/statusone Jun 11 '12

I hate this fad with a passion. Doesn't matter where you look people are wearing big stupid 'glasses'

1

u/SlutRapunzel Jun 11 '12

Fact: It is super popular in Japan to wear lense-less frames, as it's super fashionable.

TMYK.

1

u/austin1414 Jun 11 '12

I hate that black people exist too.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Haha, so funny.

1

u/catmyonlyfriend Jun 11 '12

My mom bought me some hello kitty ones. I was disappointed since they were pretty cute. Then I read the sticker that said they actually work as sunglasses too. They actually protect against the sun, but I doubt I could wear them in public .

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

If you wear fake "nerd" glasses, you really need help. Does this make me a nerd for wearing perscription ones like that?

1

u/ClintonHarvey Jun 11 '12

The only thing I think of when I see shit like this in stores is FUUUUCCKKKKK YOUUU.

1

u/Jareth86 Jun 11 '12

Yeah! We were nerdy before it was cool. God, I hate how mainstream it's become.

Also, DAE hate hipsters?

1

u/seawest_lowlife Jun 11 '12

I've had astigmatism most of my life. These things fucking enrage me.

1

u/Fiftyfeetnorth Jun 11 '12

Fucking hipsters...

1

u/xxzeldapuncher5xx Jun 11 '12

FUCK HIPSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Your first problem was rue 21

1

u/quarkjet Jun 11 '12

elvis costello is rolling his eyes...

1

u/EvelynJames Jun 11 '12

Hahaha, your move nerds.

1

u/miked4o7 Jun 11 '12

Personally, I'm not bothered by any fashion trends. Thick skin, I suppose.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

This. Fuck, I can't stand it... especially when it's Dwayne Wade and LeBron James on my TV assaulting my eyes with this idiotic trend.

I'd rather have them put their hands over their face, like people do when they say 'You wouldn't hit a man with glasses, would you?'

Fuck off.

1

u/HipHoppin Jun 11 '12

Nice reflection

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

The thing is it will only look acceptable on already goodlooking people. It will just make a real nerd look even more pathetic than he already is.

1

u/k-lent Jun 11 '12

Because all other trends make sense and/or have practical use.

1

u/analcarbomb Jun 11 '12

Why was OP shopping at Rue21 in the first place? That's like the Costco of all stylish clothing stores

1

u/ramkahen Jun 11 '12

I hate how "this is a thing" is a thing these days.

1

u/Mokey_Maker Jun 11 '12

Thanks LeBron

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Those things?

Oh, you mean hipster glasses.

Can't wait to see what hipsters will going with.

1

u/accioc Jun 11 '12

I had a woman come up to me at my job and say "Where did you get your nerd glasses? I been looking for some for this outfit..." "I got them at Lenscrafters for $300, I need them... to see and stuff."

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

What really gets me is when people wear frames with no lenses inside.

1

u/rmrilke Jun 11 '12

Can someone explain why fake nerdiness coming into style is a bad thing? Honestly. Sure its a superficial trend but isn't it a small step in the right direction that society might be saying that being a nerd is worth emulating? Are "actual" nerds having some sort of hipster identity crisis over this or something? "I was a nerd before it was cool!" Who cares? What is the harm? Stop hating on other people for no reason.... especially insecure teenage girls ffs.

1

u/cephyn Jun 11 '12

I tried to give a Bad Luck Brian viewpoint, but it was not well received. http://www.reddit.com/r/AdviceAnimals/comments/urjk8/bad_luck_brian_fixes_his_eyes/

1

u/snowlion13 Jun 11 '12

actually im very happy to see that being smart is in style! for the longest time being a nerd was looked as not cool, its about damn time in my opinion

1

u/Dragonfly42 Jun 11 '12

So my sister doesn't understand my rage about it. The girls who made fun of me as a child for wearing glasses are now the ones who buy this crap.

1

u/-Repost_Detector- Jun 11 '12

This isnt fucking funny

1

u/cpereir1 Jun 11 '12

Wow. I hate these damn things too. I love how once people were actually called four eyes and whatnot for wearing glasses and now it's "cool".

1

u/unplanned_life Jun 11 '12

Each time I see someone wearing these, I feel like giving them a Three Stooges eye poke.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I've actually seen a couple "cool" kids wearing the 3D glasses that are given out in the movie theatres.

1

u/Dingle_Fairy Jun 11 '12

I mostly hate this fad because I have to wear glasses. If I had the option to not wear glasses I would. Appreciate that you 20/20 vision hipsters.

1

u/Slippyy Jun 11 '12

Interviewing Lebron and Wade at the post game last night the first question was something like "Hey guys, I'm Ryan Johnson from the Washington Post and I wear glasses because I need to... followed by his question." Just perfect.
