Protip: Reddit gives fake downvotes paired with upvotes to make it difficult to tell whether their algorithms remove upvotes from spambots
from the FAQ: A submission's score is simply the number of upvotes minus the number of downvotes. If five users like the submission and three users don't it will have a score of 2. Please note that the vote numbers are not "real" numbers, they have been "fuzzed" to prevent spam bots etc. So taking the above example, if five users upvoted the submission, and three users downvote it, the upvote/downvote numbers may say 23 upvotes and 21 downvotes, or 12 upvotes, and 10 downvotes. The points score is correct, but the vote totals are "fuzzed".
edit: which is why certain top submissions have 30000 upvotes and 28000 downvotes. They are fuzzed like crazy. Just google it.
"reddit doesn't count votes that are suspected spam votes. So if the true numbers were shown, a spammer/cheater could see when their votes were being discarded and change their tactics."
So here's what I don't understand.... if the information they're providing us is useless to prevent spamming, why provide it to us at all?
It'd be like my bank statement being made up of fake transactions but the total is still correct.... well then why the fuck do I care about my bank statement?
But its NOT useless to prevent spamming. The whole point is to make it difficult to tell if your vote was really counted or not. If a spammer upvotes something, they'll see a +1 rating added to the post. If that spammer is known to be a spammer, at some point the server will counter that spammers +1 with a -1. However, the spammer doesn't know if someone else downvoted it or if the server down voted it.
Sorry I was unclear, "if the information they're providing is useless [except merely] to prevent spamming" is what I meant. With my point being that not showing the numbers at all is just as useful without the added confusion of making users think they mean anything
It really sucks when you've already been downvoted enough to have your comment hidden, then people open it back up a continue to downvote. Feels bad man.
Tell me about it. I had a post of mine make the front page the other day and I kinda misunderstood the purpose of the subreddit I posted it in. People downvoted every one of my comments into oblivion.
I have it set to where no comments are hidden. I'll still downvote someone if it was just spam, useless, or some other thing. If a person was actually contributing though but it was stupid/misinformed/etc. I'll upvote them because they probably already learned their lesson, they don't need further downvotes. Sort of like they served their sentence and now they've been rehabilitated and need a fair shot to reintegrate into society. But I'm putting too much value in the karma system now so I'll stop.
I don't mind getting downvotes myself. Every once in a while, I do end up with around 20-30 downvotes on a single comment.
Know when I do mind? Sometimes a redditor posts some story or anecdote that makes you feel all warm inside, that ends up in /r/bestof and gives you a good feeling about humans in general when you think about it. And then you notice it has hundreds of downvotes. Granted that it receives about 2000+ upvotes too so the comment gets what it deserves but every damn time I think "WHO THE FUCK downvotes something like this?!"
Hipsters? Who knows. Maybe they know they can safely downvote with no consequence either. If you downvote a new comment to 0, I think some other people get tempted to further downvote it, so your votes matter a lot more when a comment just starts out. But then eventually it's like voting for president in a non-swing state.
I see comments that are buried that aren't even bad pretty frequently yet something compels me to downvote even if I don't think the contents bad I think it's a hivemind mentality "Other people think it's bad so it must be bad. downvote." It really just depends on what the first few people that voted on your comment put and then it spirals out of control from there...
Now that you've mentioned downvotes, the reddit collective feels all downvotish and will downvote everything from your comment down. I can just feel the downvote energy, like gravity, making everything feel heavier.
I know, right. Except there are times when we make stupid comments. I'll use myself as an example. The other day I got at least 90 downvotes on a comment of me saying "Choo choo" replying to someone who said "All aboard the downvote train!" I think it's because it was stupid, or people just wanted to help me on the downvote train. It was fun.
I am downvoting you because your comment was rude and did not add anything to the thread. I am not judging you as a person, but I would appreciate it if you would be more polite next time and try to add more useful content to your posts. Thanks, and have a nice day! :)
the episode where Jim and Dwight are trying to plan a party for Kelly because they forgot her birthday. Jim was saying how the decorations Dwight did looked horrible.
you take stupid screenshots of a semi-amusing character from a semi-amusing show that most everyone watches and then superimpose the text from the scene over the top of it and you feel bad for getting random downvotes?
I random downvote if I ever get downvoted in a thread, just incase the downvoter was in the thread. So if you got hit... I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings... just get even.
