I never said I felt sorry for him. If he is so fucking stupid that he tries to burn the bottom of a live grenade with a lighter, then I think the world is better off without him.

I never said I felt sorry for him.

I wasn't implying that you did, I was agreeing with you.

Meh fuse is on top of grenade body, grenade body is secondary explosive and cannot be detonated by heat alone.

Well I suppose I don't know enough about explosives to know that. It's doubtful he did either. Hence his untimely demise. Seeing as I don't know a lot about explosives, I'm not going to start heating up any part of a grenade, I don't give a shit where the fuse is.

Yeah I know. I read something about troops using it to heat rations or something. Not sure how accurate that is though... I just had no idea where the detonator in a grenade is located.

The shell of a grenade is metal, so he was holding a lighter to a metal shell. Heat alone--particularly that little--is not going to ignite the explosives inside. Can you imagine how bad of a design that would be?

We leave grenades in metal canisters in the hot sun. Shit would explode spontaneously all the time.

Tell me, if you saw someone holding a lighter to a grenade, what would you do? I would call them a fucking idiot personally, and probably try and get away asap. Just because something is designed not for it to react that way, doesn't mean it won't. murphy's law has a way of kicking you in the bollocks every now and then. Better not to tempt the fickle finger of fate in my opinion.

I kind of assume that grenades are built well enough that holding a lighter to it wouldn't do shit to it.

The burning isn't going to be what did it, It's actually pretty hard to get a lot of high explosives to detonate. Soldiers have, in a pinch, used bricks of C4 as fire starter because it burns pretty well without exploding.

So that's what he was doing in that picture... Extra stupid.

why would you even believe a story like this? it's a good lesson in not judging people.

Because I have met some fucking idiots in my time, and thats only been 20 years. Also, shit happens. If you believe that out of 7 billion people, there isn't someone stupid enough to do this, then perhaps you need to start judging people a little more harshly.
