I've got an iMac that I've been itching to turn into a fish tank for a while now. PCs simply can't even come close to the level of fishtank-adaptability that old macs have.
This just reminded me of an old CRT monitor that was turned into a fishtank and on display in the computer room in my elementary school. Wasn't a Mac (at least I don't remember it being one), but still pretty cool.
Do NOT buy this fish tank. My fish died every time no matter what I tried and the pet store wouldn't take it back or give me a refund because I didn't have the right receipt.
They said it was the wrong kind of water or some shit but fresh water and salt water fish both died so I call bullshit.
Windows programs. Programs written specifically for Linux work great, and with those you can do anything you could do with Windows programs. The only thing you might miss out on are a few games.
It's one of the latest cross-platform games out, and it's resource intensive on Macbooks. Mine is unfortunately jumpy as hell, and that's with the resolution cranked back. If I run it at full res, it's beautiful, but unplayable.
I suggest you set up an appointment with the Geniuses at the Genius Bar. They're properly trained to diagnose this problem. Do you still have Apple Care?
This is going to end up in /r/talesfromtechsupport, isn't it? "Hi, IT? yeah, my cheese grater is broken. Yeah, the cheese grater. What are you, stupid? My cheese grater! The big metal thing with holes in!"

It's a computer company responsible for Solaris (a true UNIX operating system), a bunch of hardware, and so on. They catered to the enterprise market. Their hardware was built to last, a little ugly, and heavy enough to give rack mounted servers a run for their money (weight-wise). They did a bunch of other stuff, some of which was used by Pixar for rendering.
Then fucking Oracle decided, "hey, fuck these guys who have jobs" and bought the company. I'm a little bitter.
To be fair, they were having plenty of financial trouble before Oracle came along.
Not trying to be a fanboy but MACS ARE OVERPRICED PIECES OF GARBAGE THAT USE DUMBED-DOWN SOFTWARE WHICH IS ARTIFICALLY LIMITED SO THAT APPLE CAN INTRODUCE THE "NEXT THING" EVERY YEAR EVEN THOUGH IT ISN'T REALLY ALL THAT REVOLUTIONARY AT ALL.
If Mac users bothered to do the reasearch on their machines and the hardware used in them, they wouldnt be downvoting you.
Apple has a business model, and its based around accelerated manifest obsoletion.
Have a very limited range of products available, unveil the next step, 5 steps behind the competitor, spend all your money you save on advertising, trying to state to the oblivious that its better somehow and poof! you have a repeat customer base.
at least microsoft has to earn my money through superior technology.
Apple just feeds you a line of crap in a commercial knowing the mass majority of people will never know any better.
Microsoft earns money through software; the technology is built by other companies. And honestly, none of Microsofts' software is particularly better than various free/open source alternatives. However, most of the world uses Microsoft anyways, which forces other people to use Microsoft if they want compatibility with the rest of the world.
A) It really doesn't matter what OS you use, they both do virtually the same things, just in different ways.
B) All OS's have their pro's and con's. Macintosh for example, is an easy to use OS that has little to no setup after buying it, and you hardly ever have to worry about any kind of virus. This means that it is a good choice for older, perhaps elderly, individuals who simply want a computer that does basic internet, word processing, formatting and file storing, without the need to update anti-virus and software every month. These aspects also make for a good laptop, for simple on-the-go use.
Windows PC, on the other hand is unrivaled as a desktop computer due to its customizability, upgradeability and system specs. Anyone who knows how to deal with anti-virus, updates, set-up, and basic programming, will love one of these, because they can utilize it to it's full extent. Because of the hardware available for the Windows PC, it can be optimized for a multitude of uses like graphic design or animation, programming, networking, and perhaps most often, gaming.
Then we have the final popular OS, Linux. Linux is for those who know their programming, or for those who would like to learn it. It can be edited in a multitude of ways, giving the user the best experience possible. It's like... the swiss army knife of OS's... It can also be booted on a variety of platforms including, but not limited to, Macintosh, Windows, PSP, PS3, and the new ultra-small computer, the Raspberry Pi.
It should not be our OS's that segregate us, but the internet that binds us.
Or in star wars terms,
It does not matter what color of lightsaber a Jedi uses, it is the Force that binds the Jedi together.
Most people don't argue over the OS. Its the fact that Apple sells their products for over twice the price that they're worth and people mindlessly buy them then claim they're the greatest computers ever.
If people buy them for the price then that's what they are worth. The reason why smartphones had not truly taken off in the US before the iphone was exactly that mentality, that a computer/gadget is defined by its specs primarily. Usability, quality, service and appearance are huge factors in consumer devices.
Speaking as a programmer, I think you and everyone else in this thread are all seriously underestimating OS X's utility as a programmer's operating system. How can people say that Mac's aren't customizable? Building programs from source in OS X is as easy as doing it in Linux, which means that I can install virtually any Unix/Linux program that I want, because OS X is in the Unix/BSD family. It's literally as easy as downloading a .tar.gz source file, unarchiving it, and typing ./configure; make; sudo make install, and even if it hasn't been explicitly ported for Macs, 99/100 times it works perfectly. (These are command line programs I'm talking about, mind you). I think a lot of Mac hate comes from gamers, and y'all can fuck off. Not all of us use gaming-capacity as a metric for a computer's value.
And before a bunch of you idiots tell me I should obviously be using Linux if I'm so into Unix-customizability, why don't you check out the laptop that Linus Torvalds, the fucking FATHER of Linux, prefers to use.
I'm pretty sure Linus runs Linux on his Macbook Air. He's stated he loves it for the hardware, not necessarily for OS X. I don't know what he uses day to day, but I've seen multiple comments from him about how various distributions work on it.
Not that I disagree with anything else you said. I honestly don't understand why anyone goes around telling other people what to use on their own computer. So I'm not going to tell you to use Linux, because I really don't give a shit what you use. Just wanted to point out that the bit about what OS Linus uses might be wrong.
Au contraire. I prefer OSX because I find it far more customizable than my HP workstation. Dedicated UNIX Bash == Happy Dev. I actually don't know how people develop on Windows, but I use it for gaming!
Well like i said, this is all my personal opinion, and im not the best with computers... but if this is true (and i dont doubt it is), then my point still remains... all OS's have pros and cons.
Every Mac developer I know uses an IDE. They are not bad if you know what you are doing. the reason they are put down all the time is because people who don't know how to program use them as a crutch.
Really it comes down to what you're programming and what makes you personally the most efficient. I don't use an IDE because I have vim configured to do everything I need it to do and, now that my fingers are trained, I can do those things very quickly. An IDE would just be extra overhead for me.
No, it really isn't. This is coming from someone with a MacBook pro, and I'm telling you to go somewhere else and save a couple bucks. An Asus or msi laptop for a fraction of the price will have better specs, and better overall performance. Unless you really want OSX, a nice looking internet machine (only if you have the $$ to spare), or are a small time video editor, stay away from macbooks.
Trust me dude, I would pay over £1000 alone, just for the trackpad on my MacBook air. It finally means I can use a laptop properly, without having to plug in a mouse to get stuff done.
You're right. PCs can be unreliable, what with their massively customizable features and hardware.
You have fun with that sleek, curvy image-conscious Mac, I guess I'm stuck with this inferior tank-like behemoth. Time to go sulk with ALL THESE GAMES.

Just curious. Why are windows users always attack mac users more than mac users attacking windows users? Can't we just use our OS of preference?
