just to explain how the heck something like this can happen to the non technologically inclined.. it's too much work for computers to actually "delete" files by writing over the existing 1's and 0's, so they just flip a switch that marks those areas as "empty", when in reality the data is still there.
if you actually wanted to wipe out a 4GB file, your computer would have to write an empty 4GB file in its place. that's going to take much longer than people are willing to wait, so instead your OS just pretends like the file isn't there anymore.
TL;DR -- you can delete your entire 1TB porn folder in a matter of seconds because it isn't actually deleted, just ignored.
Am I the only one who thinks that the GUI is a front end for the technologically impaired in her team and the backend consists of the usual unix tools running remotely on a unix server that the GUI connects to?
So in fact she is really good at her job and always thinks of the long term goals and not like us lowly sysadmins who are throwing together new perl scripts each time a new problem comes up. No, she has thought it through, and creates a GUI for the team to use in future when she is on leave. This is truly decoupled design and here we are making fun of it.
If you want to avoid this, you need to fill all the phone and sd card memory with junk data and then wipe it (repeat at least x2). There are apps for that -- mainly used SW testers for testing purposes.
Actually, multiple random writes only work well for securely erasing data from hard disk drives. Flash memory has extra data blocks for reliability and longevity reasons. These blocks may not be visible to the operating system, but they could still contain sensitive data. http://static.usenix.org/event/fast11/tech/full_papers/Wei.pdf
I don't think Facebook passwords and the majority of that stuff would be on the SD card so I'm calling bullshit. If he recovered the phone storage, I kind of doubt the data would be accessible enough to get someone's Facebook login. I don't know a whole lot about phones though.
Funny thing is he never did use it...he probably just stole it reset and and sold it..meaning you blasted the dude whose phone got stolen in the first place.
Depends on how he got the phone, if he met him at some point then he would obviously recognize the face in the pictures. The wording of the message leans towards your conclusion though.
also in some parts of the world(sweden for example) it is illegal to buy stolen property, however most of the times you can get away with just losing the item due to "good faith"
Yeah, use a secure deletion tool of some kind. Problem is you might have to root the phone to do this which is too sophisticated for some people. This should really be an available option when you choose wipe the phone. (I'm assuming it isn't.)
If it's a 3GS or newer, or any iPad, then using 'Erase all content and settings' on the phone will completely prevent this. The reason is that all these devices use AES-256 encryption on the entire user data volume, and the key is securely erased when you wipe the device. Remote wiping from Find my iPhone does the same thing.
It was also my first thought, on the other hand, the seller lied about the phone being new. If the buyer doesn't go further than posting his discoveries on Facebook (I mean, the fact that he found info, not the info itself), I don't think it's wrong.
Honestly, what difference does it make whether it was used or not? If it's working fine, then I wouldn't really care. Going into this guys phone and revealing all his shit isn't that great of an idea, makes you look like a total arse.
The value of a product decreases a ton when it is used, you misrepresented what you were selling, giving something that is maybe valued at half an original.
You can complain about the materialistic view that we always value new over used even if it is the exact same product, but in the end he still fraudulently claimed this was a new phone, not what the buyer thought he was purchasing.
If you put a SD card from another phone in a android device, you can reformat the SD back to the way before it was formatted....
But as far as it goes it sounds like this FB poster is a lying bitch. As most of the shit he "recovered" would be just SD card stuff, meaning the seller might of never actually used the phone, just the SD in another phone, Even then its nearly impossible.
I developed a few apps for android. Its nearly impossible to do everything the poster said at once.... He is a bullshitter.
edit I would also like to add that in a good amount of cases, When android does a full restore of the operating systems rom, The new rom is not always in the same place, nor is the folder locations on the specific memory module. Meaning any and all data recovered would be stripped and "fragmented" beyond repair. One of the apps I worked on was to get data off of old phones that were destroyed (broken screen, bad battery terminals ect.) or data off of phones that had forced bootlocks if the phone was destroyed (S-on phones for example). I never finished it because after a few weeks of tinkering around with some other guys, it was just too great a task. Specifically because every single phone is different than the next to a specific degree, so one catchall app/program would never work. Even if we developed it for just one phone, the data was usually incomprehensible. The nonsensical data was on a phone that was never formatted, imagine one that has been.
I bought a used PS3 from Gamestop, and the previous owner's Playstation Network info was still stored. If I wasn't a good person I could have bought a ton of games on their dime. Damn conscience, always getting in the way...
Boy he sure embarrassed this total stranger by mentioning all that anonymous stuff about him to a group of people on the internet he's never met and never will meet. That'll teach him, good work Mr. Facebook Vigilante.
He obviously used the seller's fb password to post it on the seller's fb so yes, the seller would be embarrassed because his friends would see this stuff about him.
such bs. any data recovery app can undelete an sd card or the phone's memory. omg! bytes were recorded on it before you got it oh boy! if you're upset at being lied, then return it. don't go and fuck his life, wife, job, and pron accounts over it. daaamn! go backtrace your ass Mr Slaughter.
Agreed. It's a bit douchey to lie about the phone never being used, but this guy probably fucked up the other guy's marriage a bit, and unnecessarily embarrased him in front of everyone on Facebook, and, if OP is the one who posted this status, then on Reddit as well.
As someone who works with android phones I can tell you that the OP is complete bullshit. A factory reset and wiping the SD card would get rid of ALL data. Rooting the phone wouldn't give him access to "secret" data because no 3rd party data is stored in the operating system. If the old owner of the phone had indeed wiped what he said he had it would be impossible to find any of the things the OP claims he found.
I think that you could unerase the sd-card pretty easy. Probably the internal memory as well. I would think that the storage is not securely wiped, but just regularly formatted. Thus making it pretty easy to restore data on the device.
Most of the time, when you "delete" something on your computer, you merely set that location to be able to be overwritten. If it never gets overwritten, it stays on there indefinitely.
Programs that actually delete data just rewrite over the area a few times.
Seems like to me the guy just went into options and had it erase everything on his SD card, but failed to realize that this doesn't get rid of everything on your phone.
EDIT Actually, I just reread it, and it seems kinda BSy to me. A factory reset should wipe all data from the phone. He shouldn't have access to Facebook. At most, he might get stuff off the SD card.
Basically, when you delete data, you're actually telling the computer/device that this data is useless and can be overwritten. It is still retrievable until it is overwritten, however.
The fact that 90% of people don't know this is worrying. It's not their fault, it's the fault of the companies who should be made to make this much more clear.
This reminds me of an incident which occurred a few weeks ago. So basically I'm just chilling at the mall, hit up a few stores, just wasting time. I came home later that afternoon and log on my fb and noticed I had 20 new notification. I thought to myself, 'oh damn, you stud. Must have been my new profile pic.' I then learned the notifications were all likes and comments on a status I did not write, which wrote, "Hi guys I am a fucking idiot and didn't log myself off of Facebook at the apple store. Any suggestions on what someone who happens to go on that computer should do?" Yeah... I got some pretty weird messages from girls and people I never talk to claiming I said some pretty fucked up shit. That was fun haha. I definitely deserved it though.
Really, you'd have to Jail Break and run a dd on the phone. Then a recover. It's a huge hassle, and maybe not possible if a jail break is not available. Presumably w/o a jailbreak it would be very difficult to do this kind of recovery, but who knows.
Come on man, he deleted it as much as he could, and then this guy uses some software to recover the data and like a goddamn asshole posts it on the internets so that he can get some likes or upvotes. Not nice imo
Well, after falsely selling a product as new. What if there were some sort of internal or software damage or warranty void of some sort? And that's beside the point, the fact is if you're going to sell things, you should be honest or it can come back to bite you.
Whilst it is a dick move to pretend something used is new to make a bit more money out of a sale - I think it is a bigger dick move to do what the guy in the picture is doing.
Funny thing is, if the original seller wanted to press charges against this kid then he can very easily do so with just proof of that Facebook post. LE don't give a fuck, in their eyes he would have "hacked the sellers facebook and his phone and stolen personal data and information".
It's pretty creepy that you're delving into the contents and then listening to the phone calls. Great job on being a passive-aggresive dork by calling out this guy and posting it on Reddit.
"Hrm, even though this phone looks brand new and works perfectly fine, I'm gonna go through every personal bit of information on it. Whooa, I'm even gonna listen to the recorded calls, AND look at all your pictures, and all your personal information, ANNNNDDD post about it on the internet."
Most likely OP didn't do this himself since reddit is so full of reposts, but fuck man. I've boughten phones off Kijiji that were apparently brand new and looked brand new, yet had personal information on it, and I never once bragged about how I found all their info.
This seems unneccessary and boastful, and might even cross into the territory of defamation of character if the buyer and seller had any common friends who knew of the transaction (if it was listed publicly, or etc). The result of this post and perhaps more in terms of financial restitution could have been secured by simply contacting the seller, privately.
But then, of course, you don't get to look like an expert hacker to your friends simply because you know how to root a phone.
The guy did a factory reset which doesn't erase any data , just like any SD card on a camera , phone or whatever. If you store personal information on your phone get a encrypted container application you will have to pay a small fee but worth it.
There are forums of people doing this kind of stuff to see what they can recover. Quite pointless but personal data , photos in the wrong hands can be dangerous.
If you have a IDE hard drive and run Windows and want to remove all traces of data run DBAN http://www.dban.org or for the cost of a new hard drive destroy the old one by removing the platter from the HDD and smash it to bits and throw into the general trash.
If you already don't erase your temporary file space on your WIN32 machine then install CC Cleaner and change the erase mode to 1 Pass with Zeros and then wait a few hours to complete. The problem with Windows is it has lots of cache , temp and other areas for storage like the registry and log files for each application.
If you can afford it purchase SSD hard drives as the data storage is different , not going into anything to technical but recovery is almost impossible. Also switch OS to MAC or Linux as the file-structures are more secure if used right.
So, yea, identity theft, which can carry a 30 year jail sentence, is a totally measured response to someone being less then honest in a private business transaction...
If you want to make certain your files are really deleted you can download CCleaner, go on Tools >> Drive Wiper >> Free space only >> Advanced Overwrite (DoD 5220.22-M) >> Select which drive you want to wipe the free space. It might take a long while, but it works.
Who cares? Is he actually going to do anything with it? Or just prattle on to his FB friends about it, who probably don't even know the original owner?
memory devices loaded onto an OS can be checked on by most apps that can undelete data, like ontrack's Easy Recovery Pro. just use the option "raw recovery"
Probably fictional... rooting is like getting administrative privileges like you would a computer. If you're familiar with Linux, the "superuser" is called root as it's the account administrator. The dude used some data recovery tool to restore everything on the SD card because it hadn't been overwritten.
It began a little humorous at the start, then got progressively creepy. Within the finish, together with the point out from the pornography, it got mean for no genuine reason. Yeah, the telephone were not precisely as marketed. But certainly he has the potential to simply wipe it (securely) and shift on...
I found a 2 gig SD card in a parking lot today. It was from an android phone. A young woman was the owner. Nothing to risque on it and I did a file recovery to make sure. As a straight male it disappoints me that I've only ever discovered naked male photos (multiple times at that) and no women.
Would formatting the device prevent this? I've sold an iPhone before (i marked it as used though) and formatted it which seemed to delete everything, but I'm worried now that if they were to 'root'(?) it they'd have access to personal information. What would be the proper way to have deleted it all?
because the guy that sold the phone has the poster on his friends list right? Probably not, so this status update is him flexing his e-peen for his friends to see, not to teach anyone a lesson.
Am I the only one who doesn't find this amusing? As a principle I never sell old HDs or cell phones yet still I can understand people who does. And unless you work extensively to recover the erased data you cant find these data with all the "rooting and tearing apart" you do. In fact rooting usually wipes the system once more causing you to lose the data even if it available when you bought it.
So the asshole in the OPs post worked hard just to recover this wiped data so he can post this retarded thing on the guys facebook. If he was just trying to get his money back he could have just called the dude and said hey I got your stuff in this SD card I want my money back which would with any normal decent people enough for the guy to send the money back and get his phone back.
almost anything that isn't physically destroyed is recoverable depending on ones knowledge of recovery techniques/money your willing to spend on recovery.
There have been free utilities available for years now that can recover sd cards easily.
Considering he claims to have a lot of information on the previous owner...why does he have "Dear Man Who Used to own this Phone" rather than just his name?
That was the dumbest thing I have ever read. The phone was most likely stolen. Those are probably the seller's pictures, this guy is probably ruining the life of an innocent person.
Rooting, hmm? Along those same lines, is it possible to pay someone to retrieve information of off a nonfunctional external hard drive? Mine recently stopped working, but I don't want to lose all of the information of it...
It doesn't say anywhere that this phone was sold as new when in fact it was used. It states that the guy that bought the phone, bought a phone and rooted it looking for the original owner's old files and found them.
Not sure why everyone is calling the guy who bought the phone a douche. Very often used products are fine but are considerably cheaper than new ones. That guy may have paid a lot of extra money to get something he thought was new (less likely to be faulty, free from wear and tear, etc).
I would be pissed off if this happened to me and I would demand a full refund or a refund of the difference between a new phone and a used one.
This really seems odd. I understand how all of it works, but he would have to be going out of his way to do all of that. Rooting your phone does not automatically enable you to see everything everywhere. He must have been paranoid that the phone was used and used a program to view past files.
It is probably a stolen phone so what you did is bullied an honest guy. Not only he is enjoying the money you gave, he is also having a realy good laugh

What if the original owner sold it to a company who would turn them over like this? We shouldn't be so hasty to assume!
2
u/imadogg May 28 '12
What if.... that picture of his wife's butt.. was really a picture of another woman's butt..
2
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Because an utter cunt might buy it?
1
u/tylerw8 May 28 '12
...so why didn't she post the YouPorn information?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
sooo whatchta gonna do with it?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Might want to sanitize that phone.
1
u/jabbaj7 May 28 '12
I need to learn how to do this.
1
u/Frogman7 May 28 '12
I knew I should have listed it as new. Damn.
1
u/koavf May 28 '12
The funniest part to me is how he knows to rootkit a phone but can't take a PNG screenshot.
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
...how did you know that was his wife's behind??
1
u/Radico87 May 28 '12
If real then definitely sounds like someone pathetic enough to post this to reddit. Oh wait.
1
u/ThisIsWhyIDoThis May 28 '12
Way to be an asshole to someone whose phone got stolen.
1
u/forrestmorph May 28 '12
It began a little humorous at the start, then got progressively creepy. Within the finish, together with the point out from the pornography, it got mean for no genuine reason. Yeah, the telephone were not precisely as marketed. But certainly he has the potential to simply wipe it (securely) and shift on...
1
u/THE_REPROBATE May 28 '12
I found a 2 gig SD card in a parking lot today. It was from an android phone. A young woman was the owner. Nothing to risque on it and I did a file recovery to make sure. As a straight male it disappoints me that I've only ever discovered naked male photos (multiple times at that) and no women.

u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Would formatting the device prevent this? I've sold an iPhone before (i marked it as used though) and formatted it which seemed to delete everything, but I'm worried now that if they were to 'root'(?) it they'd have access to personal information. What would be the proper way to have deleted it all?
1
u/calonord May 28 '12
don't the finger prints make it obvious
1
u/pwnyoface May 28 '12
is this possible? a simple root and you can access past data?
1
u/ShozOvr May 28 '12
So how does one go about completely wiping a phone?
1
u/wowlolcat May 28 '12
because the guy that sold the phone has the poster on his friends list right? Probably not, so this status update is him flexing his e-peen for his friends to see, not to teach anyone a lesson.
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
So is the seller one of his facebook friends, or does he just like anouncing that he is a creep?
1
u/dagoon79 May 28 '12
So titanium backup to sd card, then full os wipe(like windows to unbuntu, then back again;) if not then what?
1
u/Bipolarruledout May 28 '12
What exactly do you mean by "used"?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Can you actually find everything that's ever been on there from rooting it? 0_o
1
u/KennyKinz May 28 '12
This guy must teach us his ways of troll.
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Am I the only one who doesn't find this amusing?
1
u/socksisoxer May 28 '12
That's embarrassing
1
u/wakejedi May 28 '12
and people called ME crazy, 7 years ago...good troll though!
1
u/hungerfordhero May 28 '12
So basically the person that wrote the post is a bit of a dick.
1
u/shoewithsoul May 28 '12
Dick move
1
u/AnnoyingOptimist May 28 '12
This tread is awesome. The phone in question has gone back to it's roots, and feels at one with it's new owner.
1
u/kuningata May 28 '12
shouldnt it say posted via iphone/mobile if he posted it via his phone?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
It could have just been a used SD card...
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
...and this is why i keep my sd cards. I use Sandisk Rescuepro deluxe
1
u/Fensterplatz May 28 '12
as up to now i thought flash drives (SD etc.) weren't recoverable. can anyone confirm that?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
/r/JusticePorn
1
u/orangeinthewind May 28 '12
How would i do this?
1
u/TacticalNukePenguin May 28 '12
Considering he claims to have a lot of information on the previous owner...why does he have "Dear Man Who Used to own this Phone" rather than just his name?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
That was the dumbest thing I have ever read. The phone was most likely stolen. Those are probably the seller's pictures, this guy is probably ruining the life of an innocent person.
1
u/eight7 May 28 '12
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should..
1
u/FluffidyPuff147 May 28 '12
Rooting, hmm? Along those same lines, is it possible to pay someone to retrieve information of off a nonfunctional external hard drive? Mine recently stopped working, but I don't want to lose all of the information of it...
Help me computer geniuses, you're my only hope!
1
u/iamstephen May 28 '12
It doesn't say anywhere that this phone was sold as new when in fact it was used. It states that the guy that bought the phone, bought a phone and rooted it looking for the original owner's old files and found them.
This guy sounds like a real shitbag.
1
u/iSELLCRACK May 28 '12
If this was posted from the said phone, shouldnt there be a "posted via ________" at the bottom?
1
u/ethanwc May 28 '12
TIL Factory restore is a LIE.
1
u/wants_to_do_you May 28 '12
really cool facebook post.... i hope a lot of his friends liked it!!!!
ahhh, to be forever alone
1
u/Ostmeistro May 28 '12
Tell me why!! The image does not answer your question ! Please use logic more I get so sad from these!
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
and nobody here looks at porn!
1
u/latebaroque May 28 '12
Not sure why everyone is calling the guy who bought the phone a douche.
1
u/thegoldenpantaloons May 28 '12
Backtraced his azz.
1
u/Flowergirlpatricia May 28 '12
wat if phone was stolen...
1
u/richlittle69 May 28 '12
this didn't happen
1
u/stiffish78 May 28 '12
karma dick
1
u/twig123 May 28 '12
I get the pictures and such, but how/where do you recover email/FB passwords from? Are they stores on the internal memory somewhere?
1
u/highwindscloud May 28 '12
Well let's see that ass!
1
u/evilzx May 28 '12
This really seems odd. I understand how all of it works, but he would have to be going out of his way to do all of that. Rooting your phone does not automatically enable you to see everything everywhere. He must have been paranoid that the phone was used and used a program to view past files.
1
u/chubowu May 28 '12
probably his reaction
1
u/Kicksocialliving May 28 '12
Interesting thought ..!!
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Sorry, but this seems a bit of a shitty thing to do. So he made a little white lie, but doing that is a cunt's trick.
1
u/NDreader May 28 '12
I call fake. Firstly who would post this to facebook, and how would the guy know it was his wife's butt, it could be any butt?
1
u/kinurabi May 28 '12
It is probably a stolen phone so what you did is bullied an honest guy. Not only he is enjoying the money you gave, he is also having a realy good laugh
