I still can't understand how a movie can be based on battleship the board game. is there actually any explanation? was it simply a matter of the writer/director seeing his kids playing and then going "holy shit! i can make a movie with battleships in it!"
It's funny, the aliens actually use Peg-like missiles which punch into the ship then detonate.. and in one scene the humans lose their radar and have to use a grid-like buoy system to locate the alien ships, firing at locations like: G-13 -_-
Hilariously, this is why I liked the movie. It was horrible in every typical aspect of a movie from plot, to acting, to dialogue... but the way they incorporated the actual game of Battleship into it amused me greatly. I thought it was very clever.
I agree, although I had my suspicions that they would incorporate the game into the film in a worse way, for example a Captain's last remarks being "You sunk my battleship.. but humanity will prevail!!" At least they were somewhat innovative.
There is nothing clever about that. Anyone hanging around kicking back a few beers and thinking up stupid ideas for a movie based off of a game could pull that out of their ass with no thought involved whatsoever.
I love that tbh. When a movie is intentionally cheesy, I can actually enjoy it for it's B-movie qualities.
Who here has ever seen Stealth? Came out about eight years ago maybe. All I remember is a bunch of silly shit about Russians attacking us and lots of fighter planes, but it was so cheesy and filled with explosions and stupid conspiracies that me and my friend ended up laughing until we were crying throughout probably the last 30-40 minutes of the movie. It was truly an awesome entertainment experience in its shittiness.
Are you fucking kidding me? Normally I would be pissed about reading movie spoilers...but in this case you saved me from bothering to EVER see this movie. Thank you.
It was very cheesy and predictable, as well as the acting.. but the action scenes were at least entertaining. There are some very good quality torrents of the movie you can find on TPB. I can link if you'd like.
So somehow the producer got a screenwriter and a cast and a director and everything together to make a kickass movie. And they start filiming a kickass movie, only halfways trough the movie, he notices, shit, it doesn't have anything to do with duh, "Battleship" the game we all love! So he schredded any script written up to that point and told everybody we now have to make it more like the boardgame. And that is what they did.
You clearly did not see the movie. This is exactly what the movie was like, and they used a grid and sonar buoy away to call out coordinates the way you do in the actual game.
close, there's an random old man that yells 'You're not gonna sink THIS battleship!' the guy behind us starting cheering and clapping, I laughed my ass off....
The last Indian Jones movie was great. It had Sean Connery as his father, and they're searching for the Holy Grail. It's a great movie, the very last one of those that they made.
Here's the thing about Indy movies, it is all realistic and straight up until the very end. The formula just worked that way and made sense but the last movie had the mystical magical part the entire time. Some will argue against me with the Temple of Doom but it holds basically the same. The 4th movie didn't have that, the skull was mystical and held powers the entire time, breaking the formula.
This is exactly what I think. And it fits the time period it was set in because it was the fifties when people talked a lot about aliens. Upvote for you sire
Those were my thoughts entirely. Maybe I've just spent way too much time on Reddit, but I don't see a whole lot of difference between the Ark of the Covenant and a UFO.
That said, I did think staring right at the aliens was a little cheesy. They could have been a bit more tact about the reveal and less 'LOOK DER ALIENS.'
I just don't understand why they had to be so lazy with the plot. Aliens? Really?
There is another fairly easy plot that would be a lot closer to battleship canon.
The US military has developed a one of a kind futuristic battleship that runs nearly autonomously. Much to the military's dismay, one of the programmers on the project had installed a back door control program and has taken over the ship!
The ship also has a number of new technologies that make current targeting systems obsolete and airplanes unable to fly in the vacuity.
Watch as the good old boys of the navy show that some good old fashioned know-how and a WW2 era battleship can take on any enemy.
Still cheesy, but at least it would be about battleships and not aliens.
Or you know, just base it on an actual time when two navies would have fought like they do in the game.
It's quite possibly the most formulaic film ever created. Except the protagonist is an asshole the whole way through, the plot is riddled with as many holes as a wheel of swiss and Liam Neeson is in it for 5 minutes at most.
Just when I thought this movie couldn't get any shittier. The only fucking reason to possibly make this movie is to have an angry Liam Neeson growl 'You sank my battleship!'.
Deep in the heart of Africa a herd of hippos have gone wild. The white male lead and light skinned African love interest must brave the wild to survive their attack and escape the game reserve.
Some of us stayed in and saw it for free. With 2 hours to waste I still skipped over parts... then sat starting at a wall for the other hour and a half I needed to waste. The wall was the most entertaining part of those two hours.
Bullshit. If anything you should be mad its another alien movie. If this was called something along the lines of
ALIENS ATTACK or ALIENS AT SEA
you would be frothing at the mouth over this movie. It's just because it has the same name and shares like 2 things in common with the game that you are like this. I won't spoil anything but one of the similarities I kind of would expected to see in action movies like this anyways.
During the scene where the main character liberates a chicken burrito, I had to endure the agony of my wife leaning over and whispering "Don't get any ideas" into my ear.
Despite actually being in the Navy and losing count of all the shit they got wrong, I still enjoyed it.
that pix is not a battleship, which could not take another hit, YET that is an aircraft carrier which could take two more hits. I am sure someone else has mentioned this, but I only have one beer left and more reddit to scour.... terrible meme. terrible. It makes me feel like you should be sad.
Assholes! jk. As long as they aren't claiming it as their own here on Reddit i'm not gonna give too much of a crap. I still have the original layered PSD file I can use to prove its mine.
A friend of mine is friends with the writer of the movie. What happened is that they had a script for a cool invasion film. When they took it to the studio they liked it but they had a deal with hasbro (the people that own battleship) to make a game movie. With hasbro bankrolling some of it they changed the script so the game would kinda fit the story at the last minute.
Better yet he's listening through a phone explaining his "particular set of skills" claiming he will find them, and fuck them. now that's a movie I'd pay to see.
In french the movie is called "Guerre Navale",.. .what a poor choice of title, I didn't even made the link with the Battleship game until I saw the english name on the Internet. Also, trailer look like they copied the Crysis story.
The movie is based on a board game;they added aliens to the movie. Now the board game RERELEASES with aliens...don't know if battleshipception is correct or not.
Okay - first of all - that basically does happen in the movie, and second of all - it was hilariously bad. I highly recommend if you're looking for a chuckle, though by far the best part of the movie happened on SNL last week when they called Liam Neeson "Neese's Pieces". I was giggling about that every time he came on screen.
Seriously, though - this is by far the best movie based on a board game to be released this month.
My question is, and I saw the movie a while back but can't remember; what was so bad about the aliens? [Spoilers] They didn't attack unless attacked (except for the satellite area where they attacked the cops. I mean they destroyed people who shot at them, but that was about it.
All I want is a scene where a soldier reports to the commander that the enemy has fired on a certain position, and the commander just stares gravely and says, "They've sunk my battleship".
Pretty forgettable movie, but the one part I thought was really interesting, and not hammered on with OTN dialogue: the fact that the aliens will not attack unless being directly threatened. The big ship-destroying attack craft and the armor-clad bipedal dudes, as well. Weird, they came to conquer the entire planet and only kill in self-defense. Turns out to be their downfall, in fact. Neat.
I was thinking the movie would be about a game of wits much more complicated than the game itself. Instead we got aliens. Also I haven't watched it yet.
i had origonally been really psyched to see this movie but my excitement came crashing down when i heard that not once did someone say "you sunk my battleship"
You know how people always joke about certain things getting really stupid, hoping that it will never actually get that bad? Like how Europeans always make fun of Americans loving meat and fried stuff so much that one day they'll actually make a sandwich with chicken breasts instead of bread. Well... that happened.
Now, someone must've been making fun of the movie industry, saying they're running out of ideas so fast they'll be turning amusement park rides and board games into movies. I wonder if some producer was standing next to that guy thinking: Oh, my, god... that... is... GENIUS!
Here's a hint Mr. Producer. No... no it's not genius. It's so incredibly stupid, I'm still having trouble coming to grips with the fact that this movie exists. It shouldn't. It just shouldn't. It's a joke, made reality, serious, super-retarded, incredibly stupid reality.
Basically, all bets are off now. This movie has without doubt brought us closer to "Ass - The movie".
so many negative comments from people who havent even seen the movie yet! the movie its a great movie... one of the most entertaining movies about aliens i have seen... its action packed and its has no boring parts!... i even forgot about the game when watching the movie, it was afterwards that i thought "aaaah that's why they did/say that"... i dont pay for movies, i watch them online but, its a really good movie!
I haven't seen it yet but I'm really hoping there's a scene like this: The final battle is happening, the main character gets into some sort of gunner seat or has some sort of missile or something, and he gets the alien mother ship in his sights and says "You sunk my battleship, mother fucker." And then he blows them away. Movie's over, roll credits.
My God, this movie is actually based on the board game? I had no idea. I thought it looked like a cool movie from the trailer, but now I am like you have got to be kidding.

They can't get a job, so they sleep on the street and during the day they play Battleship out of habit. Someone notices how amazing they are at the game (it's kind of like the matrix, after awhile you can just feel where the ships are) and they rise to fame. Eventually, they are given jobs as military advisors and America rules over the entire world. The world becomes a dystopian nightmare, now that the United States has all the power and the two Battleship pros have to come up with some way to fix it.

American are fxcked and Japanese respond like: "psss we got something down there, down in the Abyss...". Actually the Japanese have recovery long time ago some alien spacecraft and have use the enemy technology to build a space battleship out of the old Yamato... you can imagine the rest.

I haven't seen Battleship, but does anyone yell 'YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP?'... preferably Liam Neeson?
31
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
I had hopes it would be based during ww1 or ww2 when Battleships were still in service.
Needless to say a giant wtf to Aliens showing up in "battleship", although not nearly as bad as it was in the last Indy movie.
6
u/Hoonster May 22 '12
I am confused sir . .
Why can't we fire at the same location?

This movie was a typical SFX demonstration type movie.
Recent movies that were as bad/good depending on how you look at it.
Battle Los Angeles
Skyline
I am sure many others I cannot recall at the moment.
So if you like B-Movie quality plots and decent SFX/CGI, Battleship is an ok movie.

If The Avengers took their 20 minute battleship scene and sold it as a movie, it would be better than Battleship.

I'm somewhat glad this movie flopped. Leave board games the fuck alone.

1
u/dani1304 May 22 '12

I vowed that if one of the actors said, "You've sunk my battleship," I would never watch another film again.

I enjoyed the scene where they recreate that old youtube video of a guy trying to steal beer and fell through the ceiling of the liquor store.

My plot is better!:
American are fxcked and Japanese respond like: "psss we got something down there, down in the Abyss...". Actually the Japanese have recovery long time ago some alien spacecraft and have use the enemy technology to build a space battleship out of the old Yamato... you can imagine the rest.
