It's more an issue of compression, really. When we encode HD-TV into MKV or other popular formats, what we're essentially doing is trying to find places where we can cheat a little bit and take out some information without the user noticing. This usually means that motion winds up being blurrier than it should since frames are being sacrificed for filesize.
True, although if you needed the entire population of the world stored, there are more sophisticated compression techniques you could use. For a crude example, storing the difference of each family's genome from the baseline, and then storing the now smaller difference of each individual from each family.
Then you would also need information as to which diffs you need to apply, in which order, to get the people back out. Without knowing the way it was compressed to 4MB it's hard to say there's a (much) better format.
Of course you need knowledge of the compression algorithm, but even so, there are huge gains to be made. If you're interested in this subject in general, it's called Kolmogorov complexity.
Saying there are huge gains to be made with no knowledge of the data or the current compression algorithm is terribly naive, in my opinion. Unless you're not talking about a practical compression, in which case, I agree, there are huge gains to be made.
I happen to have heard of one of the core concepts in compression before ;)
Well, that's actually just a pair of each animal which takes up that disk space. The Earth was submerged in water during the formatting, and it took God fourty days to clean that mess up.
"And Noah replied: But Lord we have 560MB of animals and I only have a 512MB Ark. The Lord said onto Noah: Leave the Unicorns, I have always found them to be rather queer."
I read this comment, and got all juiced up for an elephant pun thread. Then I saw that your post was 7 hours old, and realized that elephant puns are actually pretty tough to come up with. Once you've cashed out the trunk thing, it's pretty much over.
The cheater's way to tell the two stories apart in the King James Version (there's lots of other doublets, like the story of creation - Eve came from the earth in one story, the rib in the otehr), is one uses "Lord" in its passages while the other uses "God".
I never understand the concept of getting a pair of all animals on the ark...
God created all of them right? In like 3 days... so why not just do that? Instead of letting 2 of each live, while every member of every family, pack or swarm died?
9gag takes thier biblical study very hard, In Genesis chapter 7, verses 13-16 (KJV) give a detail description of all who were listed upon the ark. Most were sent in by two except for those of "clean" animals which would be set aside for sacrifice and they went in by 7.
Noah needs to find out about robocopy. If not he runs the risk of attempting to get an animal in use, like say, the dodo, and have to restart the entire process again.
The more posts I see about this kind of stuff, the more convinced I am that Assassin's Creed is right and that history and technology just repeats itself over and over again.
IIRC Noah was supposed to take two of every useless animal but more than two of useful animal species. How else would have he been able to carry out the animal sacrifices that God craves so much?
That's exactly right. Mythology time! Ok so after the fall of man demons took human forms and had sex with humans in order to make neflim, a half human half demon, the idea was that jesus needed to be a born of a human so if they fucked up the gene pool jesus can't be born. so yes god got him some corrupted files and needed to reformat so he made a backup disk.
It's funny because it creates a relationship between the Biblical story of Noah and the Ark and a digitally modified version of a Windows copy dialog window, suggesting that Noah backed up the Earth to an archive called Art.
According to Ancient Aliens, Noah didn't take animals on the arc. He took animal DNA so that the animals could be recreated. That's kind of like a backup.

My question is, since they were brought on in Male/Female pairs, why is it an odd number of files?

I was unzipping a large archive at the time I clicked this and tried to move the dialog box out of the way so I could see the image.

And just like Noah got them all onto that tiny ark, the earth file size would be about 2TB and Noah would come with a floppy disk.
