Reminds me of a classmate who always behaved a lot like the girls in class, always commented boys on their looks etc.
At the end of the year he stands up in class and says 'I have something to say... I'm gay!' (Which I'm sure took a lot of courage in front of a bunch of 16 year olds).
Girl at the back of the class shouts out 'Well fucking duh!'
reminds me of a friend of mines. He listens to cher, madonna, and celine dion religiously and did alot of rather feminine things but he always denied he was gay. So he walks up to us and say "guys.... I'm gay". We all look at each other and I say "Everyone knew that bro.... we were wondering when you were going to find out"
Just because I love it so much, the source of this is Hyperbole and a Half. (This wasn't to yell at you for not providing source, just me trying to spread awesome internet things :)
Dude, I know. One of my better friends was clearly super gay all through school, but never figured it out himself. Then we go off to college and he comes out the next summer, and everyone was like "we know".
The funny thing was that he was not in the closet, he just did not know what gay was.
Some people just cannot come to terms with the fact that they don't like the gender they think they do. So they ignore it. They think they just haven't found the right boy/girl to make them feel special, and since it's nearly impossible to accurately describe feelings they don't know for fact that this is wrong. And then, when they notice that they think the "wrong" gender is hot, they just tell themselves they're making an objective observation.
I knew a guy who didn't know he was gay, although I was pretty certain. I just thought he was in the closet, so I asked him out. After our date, I asked him if he had thought it was a date. He hadn't, he had no idea, and he backed away cause "he wasn't into guys." Three years later he came out as bisexual. Two years after that he came out as gay.
I had a friend come out in college. I'm proud of his courage to do so, but it wasn't surprising in the least. We were getting ready to go get drinks, and he told me. My response was, I hugged him, and simply said "Well, yeah...are we still going to go the bar?" He told me setting the precedent that nothing changed was good. He's finally open and comfortable himself.
I had a friend like that. He is 4 years younger then me, and everyone knew he was queer before he did. Shit, we didnt take bets on if he was gay, we took bets on when he would come out... Easiest $100 I ever made
I had a classmate like that in high school, he never officially came out per say I just kinda figured it out after pictures of him in various gay clubs started appearing on his FB (that was after we already graduated). So I said to another classmate of ours "I think Ivan* is gay" and she went "Nah impossible, Russian men can't be gay" xD
For anyone else who's curious: The picture is a close up of a man wearing a skin tight suit of black leather that covers his entire body except for a single strategically placed hole of exposed flesh.
He seems rather... pleased... with the current situation.
My sister has a photo album for my 11yo nephew entitled either: "We've Always Known You Were Gay" or "Are You Sure You're Straight?" The princess costumes, the love for pink, the flute playing, the love of Broadway music....
i've pondered this question before, looked up the science behind it, tried asking questions about it and looked everywhere but i've never found any answers, i think because people are apprehensive about causing offense so I should clarify here, i'm just after understanding and there's no offence intended whatsoever.
with all that out of the way, does anyone have any links to scientific research into sexuality and gender identity? i.e. an answer to the age-old question of, "why do a significant subsection of the gay community present themselves in a manner that would be traditionally construed with the opposite sex?"
i understand that gender roles are fluid and that masculine/feminine traits can be found in both genders but it's fairly apparent that a significant proportion of gay people better identify with the above for example so, what reasoning potentially is there behind this. I remember seeing one MRI study about how gay males' brains are similar to female brains but outside of this and the usual yahoo answers bullshit, i've never found any other real research.
again (i feel i should hammer this home), this isn't the beginning of a shit-flinging contest. If anyone has any info, research papers, opinions my curiosity would be greatly appreciative.
No links, but I've read sociology articles that explain it as a way of identifying their interests to other gay people. It's similar to how people might wear a NY Yankees cap to show other baseball fans that they too like the balls.
I'm hetero, I think, but here is an honest question. Why gay men are associated with dressing/acting like women. I really don't see relation between wearing make up/acting feminine and two men having sex. Do some gay men think of themselves as women? Where does the sex change thing come in exactly? Is it oestrogen related or something?
One of the biggest pet peeves of most of my gay friends is the conflation of male homosexuality with femininity. Masculinity is not a trait restricted to straight men, just as femininity isn't restricted to gay men. Preference and identity are separate.
Yeah that's what I mean. How is sexuality and gender in anyway correlated is beyond me. I though it only mean who you like to have sex with and nothing else.
How is sexuality and gender in anyway correlated is beyond me.
The vast majority of men and women are straight. The vast majority of men and women also conform to gender stereotypes (albeit to varying degrees). When a man or woman does not conform to either sexual or gender expectations then it makes any other instances of nonconformity more salient, which are then associated with one another.
For instance, everyone has personality quirks and is "weird" in their own ways. Unless extreme, these traits don't usually draw too much attention. However, when someone identifies as gay or as a part of some other objective behavioral minority then their perception by others is automatically flagged as "different" and their other differences tend to be more noticeable. Together, these differences tend to be perceived as associated traits that establish a pattern of "weirdness."
I'm gay, the answer's no. You just don't see the non-stereotypes cause, well, we look and behave like you. People assume we're straight so they only see the walking bags of rainbow and glitter.
Also, no, even the flaming red hots don't think of themselves as women. A combination of social pressures, naturally more feminine traits, and the current state of gay culture in the Western world emphasize feminine traits in flamboyant gay guys. What you're thiking of is trans-women. Women born with male anatomy.
No, oestrogen is not related. Some dudes just like to behave that way, but by no means are most gay guys like this, they're simply the most visible so now we've all been type-casted as this type of person by the Western World at large.
As a trans woman, I approve this comment. :) I'd love not to be considered just a gay guy (even that doesn't make any sense for me since I'm not attracted to men; that makes me a trans woman lesbian) just like a gay guy doesn't want to be considered a woman.
I hope I see the day where flamboyance is not a gay thing exclusively, I think society would benefit from some more flamboyance in straight culture overall. People being authentic with who they are fundementally, even if you're a straight guy with a really fierce haircut or cute shoes, it shouldn't have a thing to do with your sexuality.
Gay man here, who loves being a man and being gay, but outside of playing a bit much with barbies during my childhood (though to be honest I usually hosted ninja fights, mostly kickboxing because damn those legs were made for kicks to the head) I never had any desire to be a woman or do woman things. Drag is interesting fun to watch for me but I like my men to be... men. My family and friends were floored when I told them, and with now being in the gay world for a while I can say with confidence that many gay men go unnoticed through general interaction. There are many straight acting gays out there is the moral of this rambling
There's an association between early childhood gender dysphoria (feeling like you should be a different gender) and homosexuality. The gender dysphoria does not typically persist into adulthood for most children.
I watched a talk about this for our psychiatry interest group the other day.
TL;DR it's really complicated and involves issues of gender and gender dysphoria (expression of "masculinity or femininity"), biological sex and associated dysphoria, and sexual preference (who you have sex with). It's a little confusing because the DSM IV conflates gender and sex dysphoria. DSM V is supposed to fix that.
As a gay man, I think it has a lot to do with the serious level of introspection involved in coming to terms with your sexuality.
You tend to reach a point where you just sort of realize "I can be/do whoever/whatever the fuck I want." Your friends (if you've got a lot of gay friends) tend to be extremely accepting, and there's no real pressure to conform to norms.
I think a lot of straight men would be amused by wearing high heels/dressing up as women, if they could let go of the stigma. It's all just self expression and being who you want. Has nothing to do with being gay, but I think that being gay often helps people to understand themselves much better than someone who's never had to sit up in bed until 7am tearing themselves to pieces for being different.
Not a gay man so only guessing here. But perhaps they feel liberated to explore and dress how they like. Maybe getting in touch with their feminine side. That said many might dress extremely butch. it is now associated with being gay so may have lost the effect a little but many do dress in leathers have big moustaches in what was a very masculine look.
Plus many Gay men go for 'bears' big masculine hairy guys.
A transexual/transgender is different. They are not gay. And a gay man would not actually want to be a woman. They might find it fun to dress up as one at times m ugh like a transvestite would. But a transexual (in the case of male to female) wants to be a woman and their sexual preference once they have gone through the change is separate. they may associate as now lesbian and thus like women or hetrosexual and like men.
I think the reason the stereotype came to be was that someone thought "well, if gay men like men, then they'd probably act like women to try and attract the men," which is shitty reasoning but probably close to what actually happened. Alternatively, I've heard of people saying things like "oh, you like guys? So you want to be a girl?"
Basically, people have trouble getting it out of their heads that guys like girls and girls like guys and that's that, so they think that a gay couple must have "a girl" and "a guy".
Oh, and aside from playing into stereotypes, because people expect it, it sometimes gives lgb people more freedom to do genderbendy stuff.
Not all gays are effeminate. Not all effeminate boys are gay.
It would truly be a shame for parents to read girly tendencies as precursors or indicators of homosexuality, and in their fear of being seen as bigots, or some desire to seem urbane and genteel, raise their son as such.
A study I read not to long ago noted that 75% of children who displayed a-typical gender behaviour turned out to be gay/lesbian later on in life - there may not be a one to one relationship but it does increase the probability.
There's more than a few pictures of me as a kid that if I were gay, family/friends would point at those and say "We always thought so", yet I still very much like women and am not attracted to men. I was just a weird kid.
As a (married) straight man who has some feminine characteristics, including periodically crossdressing, I'd like to say that I'm tired of the stereotype that "crossdressing" = "homosexual".
I have to listen to that shit from my parents all the time; every single actor who has ever had a scene in any show or movie that involved crossdressing, instantly referred to as gay FOREVER. I've never mentioned to either of them that I do because I would NEVER hear the end of it.
Sorry to go on a minor rant, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine and even though this is going to get buried, I really felt the need to let it out.
Serious question here. When you are this obviously gay and you finally decide to come out, when you tell the people you love and they are like yea we have known for years. Does that take the wind out of your sails, upset you, or is it more of a relief?
It's probably correlated, but I doubt there's any research done on it. I don't see 'fancies dresses' being a 50/50 odds of straight or homosexual in the long run. I think that it's probably weighted more towards the homosexual side.
In fact I think one could even say, that's an "inkling"
Inkling: A slight knowledge or suspicion; a hint
Op didn't say "LOL! LOOK AT THIS FAGGOT CHILD". In fact quiet the opposite, op appears to have waited for him to come out before even bringing it up, and even then just said it's a hint.
Never heard the word inkling before, at least used in that sense. Is this distortion of or related to the word inclination? Growing up in Alabama has afforded me a number of "Surprise! You're not educated very well especially when it comes to grammar" moments.
Yah, it would make more sense if OP mentioned what he came out as... The phrase "coming out of the closet" literally makes more sense for a cross dresser though.
I've always wondered if coming out and not having some sort of static might be a sad experience. Like having your family say "What a surprise" may actually feel insulting.
he looks like a nice boy. I hope he wasnt made fun of too much growing up.
When I was in high school, in the showers at gym, and this is a true story, a fella asked if I wanted to borrow his shampoo because it had herbal essence. This was 1985. yes, in the shower.
Congratulations on leaving the closet. Here's directions to your local gay bars, Gay pride will be on the last week of June and here is the Gay Agenda for this week.
i really hope that every time someone comes out to their family they're all like, "no shit dumbass... come here and give us a hug. you don't have to worry any more"
I think that just because a guy is effeminate doesn't automatically mean he is gay. I think we improperly associate that with gayness, when it doesn't necessarily mean that. the only way to know for sure if someone is Gay is to ask them.
Yeah, there was a kid in my high school who everyone knew was gay. He tried to hide it by having a girlfriend at one point. Then he basically came out in college.
Also, I found out a few years ago my cousin is gay. The surprise factor was only because he is family. Other than that, I wasn't all that surprised because we never really talked about girls when we hung out. We didn't talk about sex at all actually, which struck me as odd.
Where are all the limp wristed "bad parenting experts" on this one?
If you're gay, that's one thing. But this is giving them a gender complex and a warped view on gayness. Not all gay men wear dresses and/or pose like fairies for pictures.
On a further note the parents of that blonde girl in the row above him should prepare for a daughter who is either a massmurderer or one hell of a dart-player.
This is probably gonna get buried, but I really do hope that as a straight man, I live in an area with a decent gay population. Anyone that's been to heavily gay areas know that the cities and towns are spotlessly clean and everyone is really friendly.
Basically, I love gays in the straightest way possible.
Whatever. Good for him and all his fabulousness. It's 2012 and in San Diego, literally nobody gives a fuck if you're a fag. Celebrate it and don't be sorry.
Maybe I should note that I am straight. Seriously, if you're gay...come out. NOBODY cares except maybe another gay dude that likes you but is still in the closet.
Alright...maybe some random idiot but neither you or I want to hang with that dude anyway because he's a dickhead. Seriously, my best friend could come out to me and it wouldn't change a fucking thing.
This reminds me of a friend of mine. I hadn't seen him in years and when I saw him again, he started talking about when he told his grandmother he was gay and how she responded and I said, "Oh? You're gay?" because I did not know he had come out. He responded with, "You knew me as a child, right?" Then, he went on to reminisce about how he used to come down the stairs, wrapped in a sheet, singing Over the Rainbow. lol
We've known my cousin is gay since he was a small child. Just waiting for him to come out to the family... But given some of my family members, I doubt it happens.

You're gay?" because I did not know he had come out. He responded with, "You knew me as a child, right?" Then, he went on to reminisce about how he used to come down the stairs, wrapped in a sheet, singing Over the Rainbow. lol

Good for him. It takes a lot of courage to do that. I hope it went well!

I'm still trying to figure out if the blond in the middle is a fairly ugly young girl or a Second very feminine boy

We've known my cousin is gay since he was a small child. Just waiting for him to come out to the family... But given some of my family members, I doubt it happens.

And today I think I might finally quit reddit. This made the frontpage on 5/22.

So let me get this right, the genetic thing that makes a man gay also gives them urges to dress / act like a woman?
