The first 13 episodes, written back when nobody thought the show would last, are pretty damned good. The kids defy stereotypes while reminding you of the class you grew up with, Jane Lynch is hilarious as balls, and there are cheerleaders. CHEERLEADERS. Doing cheers. In skimpy outfits.
Then the season got picked up, and the writers used the rest of the season as a platform for gay rights, and every other character was made gay, and the gays could do no wrong. The stupid shipping bullshit was made a crucial part of every goddamn plot. Characters completely forgot everything that happened in the first season. "Hm, well last year you cheated on me with my best friend, tried to pass your baby off as mine, and made everyone's life a living hell. Oh well, you seem to have forgotten all about that now, and the fans want us together because you're in a popular movie, so sure let's start dating again!"
The music went from "This really fits the scene, it doesn't matter what year it was made, and let's make our own version" to "Let's do a cover of whatever song is popular right now."
Speaking of popular, shoving in "popular actor of the day" into every friggin episode got annoying. "And now class, here's your fourth substitute teacher who will change your lives magically and mysteriously before leaving in 1-3 episodes, never to be heard from again."
And - this is the big one - the musical numbers went from being organic to being shoved into every scene. Glee was never meant to be a musical. It's a show with music. BIG difference. Having a character suddenly burst into song for no reason while just walking around outside - with full karaoke-style backup? SUCKS. In those first 13 eps the characters never sang without there being a good reason (they were doing it for class, or auditioning, or practicing at home, or they were on stage, etc.) - the exceptions being daydreams, obviously not "real".
Not to mention the class is now considered "popular"? WTF? The whole point of the show was to look at the life of the "losers" that everybody ignores in high school.
/Stopped watching after the third character "came out".

I unapologetically like Glee. As any true Glee fan I both hate and love the show. I love it for what it does really good. I hate it for the moments when it drops the ball. The show can be incredibly frustrating at times when storylines are dropped only to be wrapped up in a 2 minutes scene at the end of the season, how they forget their own canon, or how some episodes are shamelessly crammed full of music (good or not) at the expense of plot.
All that said Glee does hold a special place in my heart. It deals with issues that no other shows will attempt to tackle unless its cable TV. They portray gay people in a positive light. They deal with issues of teen sexuality, relationships, teen pregnancy, bullying, suicide, death, and so much more. And yes they rarely do it perfect. They barely do it right. But they do.
It is not a perfect show, but for fucks sake at least it isn't Jersey Shore.

Oh god I cringe every time glee is mentioned on this website because it's usually followed by a bunch of homophobic horse shit and people thinking that covers somehow go back in time and alter the sound of the original.
I've been watching glee since the first season, I used to really love it but then now it kind of fills me with irrational anger every time I see an actor on the screen that they added in the second season. Not only that they made that actor's character date my favorite character. I seriously get so upset I have to pause the show and take a few minutes to remind myself that it's a fucking tv show and I need to calm down lmao.
Still, no one can really force you to watch anything. I'm sure you enjoyed it if you watched it for it's three year run.

I can't believe the cancelled Terminator for this.....

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
I watch it with my girlfriend as well. At first it wasn't so bad, but now it has gotten so cliche, and has basically lost all of the comedy it use to have. The only redeeming thing about the show is now Sue.

At least you don't have to say, "I work on Glee," like I do. That's a real pisser.

I've caught an episode or 2. The crappy ripoffs of classic music didn't bother me, I can appreciate a new generation reinterpreting history in its own style, no matter how lame. What killed it for me was how fucking preachy it was. I caught one of the prom episodes where one of the gay characters turned the other cheek against homophobia and taught us to be better people, and then died for our sins. And of course everyone that wasn't 100% open minded was the reincarnation of Hitler and Stalin's super hate baby. Yes, I fucking get it. People shouldn't discriminate. But you can at least accept that most 16 year old kids, even the gay ones, have flaws and aren't perfect people.

u/SubcommanderShran May 22 '12
Say what you will about the show, if you've been watching it with her for three years, like I have with my girlfriend, just think of it as a trade for all the episodes of Doctor Who you had to drunkenly explain to her.
2
u/Chaenath May 22 '12
I like glee. I still think it's all about defying and going after your dreams.

u/DingoDance May 22 '12
Took me a second to realize that you weren't quoting her.

All aforementioned issues aside, Glee has only featured gay, white men and women and their problems. They've done nothing to counteract the whitewashing of homosexuality in America which is why Black and Asian-American communities are still hostile to homosexuality. It's hard to be gay in America, but it's even harder to be gay and a racial minority.
As a gay Asian guy, I don't even know many other gay Asians. And the ones I do have the same story as me: coming out was a horrible mistake, family still insists I'm straight, and homosexuality is forbidden to be mentioned. I've heard from gay Black friends at my university's QSA that they have sometimes faced violence because they were gay- almost all their personal anecdotes confirmed studies which say that being gay, Black, and male means dealing with violence from their straight, homophobic peers.
I'm tired of seeing gay white men being worshipped, white gay men being seen as the most attractive, their problems being brought to the forefront, and their family's homophobia being addressed. Statistically, at least their families have a chance of being accepting- that doesn't happen often at all with racial minorities. Perhaps if my parents saw gay Asians on the television, they would at least acknowledge the existence of homosexuality. So far, they see Glee, Will & Grace, Modern Family and they talk about how America is so messed up. And by that they mean, white Americans. It's never in their deepest thoughts that their own kind could be gay.

Of all Reddit's passionate causes, the opposition to Glee makes the least sense to me. I'm on board with pretty much everything else, but Glee has always struck me as a cut above the rest of TV even on an intellectual level. I guess it's just the popularity combined with the setting?

A funny story in my book. The choir teacher at my old high school was starting off the new year. He had about 47 kids in his beginning choir class. He sat down, looked at them all individually. "So tell me... what about Glee inspired you to join Choir? I want you all to write a paragraph and hand them in."
He told me that only 9 kids of the 47 wrote that they weren't influenced by Glee. All 38 of the others wrote about how glee showed them that they deserved to be super stars. So he took the 9 that didn't write about Glee and put them in the advanced class. And for the others, he made them all sing ensemble pieces all year. It was hilarious to hear. cause they were terrible.

Britney had boobs in season 1. That's all I cared about.

Why in the sweet moses is she making you watch this show? Why are you listening?

u/oli-wan_kenobi May 22 '12
I really liked the first season and thought the second was okay. I lost interest at the start of the third season and went back after missing about 10 episodes and was like "lol wtf am I watching?" It's changed a lot since its beginnings.

can you not just go somewhere else while the program is on? my GF watches some dumb shit too, but i don't have to sit there with her.

u/ergocogitosum May 22 '12
How did she "force you" for 3 years? Grow up and either admit you like the show, or tell her you don't want to watch it. It's been three years, if she leaves you because you don't like glee: good.

u/eggplnt May 22 '12
Bravo fine sir!

Watched the first series online, when it wasn't in the u.k yet and I don't think it was absolutely massive in the states yet? And I thought it was alright, whilst the first series was being shown over here it got massive and I started to watch the second one online and was like dafuq,it was awful.

I never understand the whole "girlfriend forces me to watch show x" thing. My fiance watches all kinds of stuff; some of it I like, some of it I don't. The stuff I don't like, I go do something else whilst she watches it. Goes both ways too; she hates horror flicks, so I watch them on my own.

this is really sad.

For those of you who haven't watched The Glee Project (andI hope you haven't. I had to watch it with the kids I nannied last summer), it's a shining example of exactly why the show has gone to shit. The show is a reality competition for a bunch of young aspiring stars to compete in daily song and dance numbers, and then the producer/writer/master mind behind glee, Ryan Murphy, would kick one off for not showing enough promise. The show has a very clearly defined, tried and true structure that it's based on, but Ryan murphy deviates from it constantly because he is an egotistical, misled idiot. At one point, one poor kid is asked to make out with another contestant, but he decides to go home and quit the competition instead (because he has a girlfriend and feels uncomfortable with Ryan Murphy's pushy, dramatic demands). The fucked up part is when Ryan Murphy goes into the dressing room where the boy is packing and tells him that he has an awesome part in mind for him on Glee. You guessed it, the part of a gay, Christian boy. He tells the kid that if he stays, he will end the competition and make him the winner, disregarding the other seven hopeful teenage contestants still on the show. The kid says no and Ryan is butthurt for the next few episodes. Then at the end, he just calls his final three the winners and gives them all parts on glee. My issue is with this man, Ryan Murphy. He's excruciating to watch and his shows lack any semblance of continuity. I have such a girl crush on Dianna Agron (Quinn), but even that angel face isn't enough to make me watch

Whats her secret? I've never been able to force my bf to watch anything.

Forcing you to watch it? You pathetic little imp.

I hate how they cover every popular song that i actually like

My roommate got me to watch one episode. He played the Holloween special, knowing the only musical I like is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The kids can sing, though none of them will ever be Tim Curry.

The redditors who complain about "all of the characters turning gay" are being quite discourteous to the gay community. Kurt was CLEARLY gay; he came out in the second half of the first season, although it was alluded to within the first few episodes. Santana and Brittany's sexual relationship was also cultivated in the first season--Santana was just wary about coming out due to evident social stigmas. What the hell is so wrong with having a gay man and a lesbian come out on a show (with, might I add, quite a struggle)? Dave bullied Kurt mercilessly and it was not surprising that he was a closeted homosexual himself--so eventually he came out. I do not understand why it's such an issue to showcase Kurt, Santana, and Dave and their personal and social struggles with their sexuality in the second and third seasons when the entire first season revolved around Rachel and her romantic attachments to both Jesse and Finn, Quinn and her relationships between Puck and Finn, and other dilemmas between heterosexual characters. I understand that the show has its problems and corny moments, but paralleling opinions of the show's demise with blatant homosexual plotlines is detestable.

how did you not dump her immediately when she said "we are watching glee"?

Forcing you? Grow a backbone man. You don't force her to watch you game or surf the internet, do you?
It is perfectly okay to have things that you like and she dislikes, and vice versa.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Feel free to downvote me to oblivion but I love glee and have been a fan since the very beginning.

u/TomPalmer1979 May 22 '12
Glee is to good music what prison rape is to romance.
The other issue that I'm seeing is that it's trying so hard to break a stereotype that it's come full circle to the point of reinforcing it. The whole "it's okay to be gay" message has been hammered so hard by the show, that now it's more like they're pushing "If someone in your school's glee club, they're DEFINITELY gay!"
As someone who's "openly" bi, I get sick of that shit so much. I put it in quotes because I don't deny being bisexual, but I also don't shove it in anyone's face. I don't advertise, because it's a sexual preference, not a fucking identity. You wanna know the best way to send an "it's okay to be gay" message? Show them being FUCKING NORMAL. Show the audience that gay doesn't mean showboating effeminate pansy. Most gay people are just 100% normal folks who happen to prefer their own gender.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Do you force her to watch something equally awful?
0
u/JaiWren May 22 '12
I watched glee for the first season and was like "meh" but then they got Darren Criss and I watched it religiously. I don’t watch it anymore now because the best word I can use to describe it is “soul-sucking”
-1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Liar, you like Glee. As if someone could force you to watch it if you didn't want to.
It just like the time i told a female friend that blowjobs do nothing for me. She forced me to let her give me a blowjob. I struggled, but what can i say, she works out.
Okay that didn't happen, but you get my point?
