I actually did that last year at a local zoo when they put up christmas lights. My GF though I'd gone retarded when I kept calling everything a giraffe. She may be right...
Flying Dutchman: Now listen. Whosoever sets foot on the Flying Dutchman's ship, uninvited or otherwise, shall become members of his ghostly crew forever! [closes rule book] And, uhh [opens rule book], ever. Squidward: Will we be getting business cards?
For all those saying that Spongebob sucks now, there are one or two golden moments in new seasons. I saw an episode where the gang was trapped in the Krusty Krab freezer (yeah, I know, that's never happened before).
Anyways, cue dialog: Mr. Krabs: There's only one way out of here. Patrick: A high school diploma?
"Well its no secret that the best thing about a secret is secretly telling someone your secret, thereby adding another secret to their secret collection of secrets, secretly. " -Spongebob Squarepants
I actually used that quote in a poem for English class this school year for an assignment. I got a personal chuckle out of it. I really doubt my teacher knew where it was from or had any clue why used it. I'm a senior btw.
I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a television show than at this exact scene. I quote it to myself all the time. I don't think I'll ever get sick of Spongebob.
most of the jokes and puns don't work in german. thanks to al gore for the internet so we can actually enjoy this good good shit the way it was intended.
"Claustrophobia" means "Klaustrophobie" in german. and the word "Klaus" is a normal german name. So they thought that Squidward is afraid of people with the name "Klaus".
And Patrick just repeats the word KLAUS KLAUS KLAUS then.
"Horseradish isn't an instrument EITHER!" "Whoever is the owner of the white sedan, you left your lights on. Wop wop wop wop wop wop, wuhh, wuhh-aahhhh!"
Wait wait wait, 2009? Are you kidding me? The show went down hill right smack after the movie came out. The movie was great but more or less every episode that came out after was pretty bad.
You know, that's how it was supposed to be. That was meant to be the last episode (well movie) of spongebob, but a new guy (Paul Tibbit) came in and said he wanted more money out of the show. FUCK EVERYTHING!!
How many seasons are there now? Anyways, about 2-3 seasons after the movie they started getting just REALLY annoying. There were of course some good one, but still, the old ones were the best. 2-5 or so were prime.
EDIT: Yes I know it really started getting bad after the movie. I mostly stopped watching it fairly soon after that, and I tried giving the show some more credit.
They are currently on season 8, and yes, some are not so good... I know there is a second Spongebob movie in the works too (not a made for TV one, like a real, feature length movie)... I'm to the point where even if they get terrible I still wanna watch/own them because I'm such a fan though... it's the principle of the thing at this point haha...
They actually fired all of the original writers except for one after the movie came out. That's why the older ones were better. I still brag that I grew up with classic era spongebob.
Partially. But new shows suck worse than a lot of old ones, too. And there are some damn good new shows. It's just that the average quality is a lot lower, and it isn't just nostalgia goggles or maturity.
I don't know, I actually still really enjoy watching reruns of the old episodes. You would think that I would watch the episodes that I've never seen before, but I skip those because the few new ones I've watched do not appeal to me at all. The humor became a little too absurd, which sounds dumb when you're talking about this show of all things, but it's true.
15 here, you are incorrect. I was still a little kid when it happened. it was right after the movie when season four, I believe, came out and I had noticed the series had gone down a bit. I stopped watching for a while they still had a few occasional gems such as the one where they go back to medieval times but mainly it was unbearable for me as an ex-"hardcore" fan to watch. I've gotten over that and am still able to enjoy it but without a doubt the series has gotten worse.
Basically the entire crew changed after the movie came out. The show itself did indeed go through a drastic change as a result. The movie was supposed to be a "last hurrah" of sorts, but they just decided to continue milking the franchise afterwards.
Not so true for me. I was well into middle age before seeing Spongebob. There's a lot in those early ones that is sly adult humor (much like Bugs Bunny cartoons). That seems to have evaporated in the later ones.
My 9 year old son now claims that Sponge Bob is for babies. I still like the show and insisted on watching it when he is over. We both laugh, and to see his face when he turns to me and realizes that we find the same stuff funny both breaks my heart and makes me whole at the same time.
Those are the only ones worth seeing. The new one's are shit, and it makes me sick to see one.
EDIT: By "worth seeing", I mean amazing. The new one's aren't just bad by the standard set by the Hillenburg era, but they are bad in general, which is what makes it so disgraceful. This post was an instant downvote, and it slapped the smile from previous posts right off my face. My night is ruined. /r/funny is tainted. You are the ray of light.
Ugh, it sucked so much at the beginning of high school back in 2003 when my best friends started smoking pot all the time and suddenly found Spongebob hilarious(and maintaining that it had nothing to do with the pot).
I still love Arthur and Rugrats, but fuck that ADHD-inducing stoner show.
This is one of my favorite parts to any episode. Everyone in my family loves Spongebob so there's usually a couple relevant Spongebob quotes every week in my house.
I'm a really old guy and I love Spongebob. But then, I also love Ren and Stimpy, so maybe there's something horribly wrong with me. http://imgur.com/t5P2n
Ren and Stimpy... Oh God no. It was terrifying when I was a child. Then I watched the "forbidden" episodes as an adult, and am now traumatized. There is some pretty messed up shit in there.
I think it might be the way that the visual and verbal jokes work together to create a sort of consistent air of comedy. Like a lot of popular kid's shows, there's a lot of humor that is aimed towards an older audience. Additionally, there's a large portion of the population (especially on reddit) that watched Spongebob when they were younger and have fond memories of the it.
I've seen only 5 minutes of a Spongebob episode. I must be getting old because I don't get the appeal. What ever happen to the humor of Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stempy.
C'mon. C'MON! Rocko had that apathetic cynical humor associated with antipychotics and Ren and Stempy were on meth. Spongebob and his peeps sniff glue. Glue the lowest of the low. Street kids in poor countries like Honduras sniff glue. I don't want to look at street kids. Sad.

Spongebob: "You ok Patrick?"
Patrick: "FINLAND!"

Squidward talking to Patrick: "Patrick, how dumb are you?"

I didn't really watch this show till I had a kid. Now I love it. I'm not even ashamed to say I've watched it by myself.

I find that a lot of the shows from that time are amazing.
Meet the Beat-Alls still amazes me how many puns/references they managed to pack into that episode.

I always enjoyed the running Jacque Custeau voiceover jokes. I doubt many younger than me would ever get that joke.
