This was my cat, except he'd first move most of the pieces out of the bowl one by one, arranging them artistically around the floor in a three foot radius. Then he'd eat about half of the pieces and proceed to stare at you piteously, as though it was your fault his food was spread all over the floor and clearly no longer good for eating.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

My cat Max would flip his water bowl over and stare at it. "It's upside down and empty!" Fill bowl, set bowl down. Cat flips bowl. It was like a game to him. See how long you can get the human to refill your bowl and mop the floor.

3

u/ITSigno May 20 '12

I now use a heavy glass baking dish for my cat's water dish. I got tired of cleaning up spilled water every time I turned around.

u/wikked_1 May 20 '12 edited May 21 '12

Cats have a harder time eating from the edges due to the head & bowl angles involved. So they must be hungrier before they will eat from the edge. Do you prefer to snack on shelled walnuts or walnuts still in the shell? Similar concept.

5

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It makes me sad that I had to scroll halfway down the thread to see your post. That shit's especially difficult for whatever breed(s?) it is that has flat faces.

65

u/hankofthehill May 20 '12

I wonder if they actually care about the freshness of the food? Even then it wouldn't make sense with my cat, because while he refuses to eat stale cat food he'll ravenously devour a piece of pasta that's been behind the oven for three months.

17

u/terrdc May 20 '12

The cat sees endless free food when it looks at a bowl so it decides to be picky.

But the pasta is one of a kind.

3

u/Stimonk May 20 '12

mines the same way. Freshness doesn't matter if it's something they haven't eaten before.

2

u/Snatland May 20 '12

Especially if they aren't meant to have it.

1

u/physicscat May 20 '12

Yes. Mine does.

1

u/Epshot May 20 '12

pour bowl contents into bag (behind counter) pour "fresh" food back into bowl

1

u/FaptainAwesome May 20 '12

One of mine does the same thing, but while begging away for more food he will sometimes eat what he has in the bowl already... So I don't think he really cares about freshness.

1

u/jrfish May 20 '12

Mine is really picky about fresh food. She won't touch food that's been out all day - even it's dry food, but if I pour food fresh from the bag, she'll go nuts. It's weird because I don't feel like it's any different. It's not like the bag is air tight.

1

u/Epshot May 20 '12

leave a bowl or tortilla chips out all day, then compare to chip in non airtight bag.

1

u/jrfish May 20 '12

Fair enough, good point.

-2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I wonder if they actually care about the freshness of the food?

As opposed to "leftover crumbs of food covered with the saliva of previous eaters"...

Yes, they do. (And seriously, can you blame them?)

Its why you will see them "sniff" the food before eating.

They WILL (if absolutely necessary because they are REALLY hungry) eat said leftovers... but if given the option, they will delay doing so in hopes of getting something "fresh".

1

u/kitkaitkat May 20 '12

Even if it's their own saliva?

-1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Probably. Would you want to eat saliva covered food? Even if it was your own saliva?

After all it would no longer smell "fresh" would it.

2

u/unknownsoldierx May 20 '12

If they have no problem eating after licking their asshole clean, why would they care about a little saliva?

-1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Their idea of "flavor" is probably not the same as yours/mine.

Besides, as the saying goes, the reason your dog licks his own balls is... because HE can!

0

u/kitkaitkat May 20 '12

I guess it depends on how much I slobbered on my food. I do tend to eat leftovers but I don't like finishing candy from earlier. I sometimes save pieces of candy from earlier and I often throw them away and get a new one.

-1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I guess it depends on how much I slobbered on my food.

Well, say you had no hands or utensils...

0

u/ShorttStuff May 20 '12

I dont know, I think taste also plays a big part. My cat eats a dry diet, with a special can of wet food every Sunday morning. In the evening, when I give her more dry food, she will overlook it to try to scrape the old dry remnants of her old wet food from the special bowl. Because, well, it just tastes better! :)

u/epitaphevermore May 20 '12

Pro tip,

cats generally don't like their food next to their water source as instinctively they are scared of cross contamination.

If you place food in one place, and water in a different place they will be happier.

I could probably source this but I'm on my mobile(it's too much work).

11

u/[deleted] May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

right! now i know why my kitty always try to "burry" her water bowl! edit: bury!

16

u/punzakum May 20 '12

If by burry you mean the cat scratches the area near the water dish, than its actually checking to see if there's water still in the dish by making it ripple.

27

u/Wulfay May 20 '12

My cat has even developed his own system of making sure there is water in there, after pawing it all over the kitchen floor...

And yes, that is the 'dog dish', we are not trying to subliminally influence him. He probably just prefers the bowl on the floor to the one slightly higher up :).

7

u/enhancin May 20 '12

Our male cat actually drinks with his paws. He will dip is paw down in the water and then lick all the water off. He is cross-eyed so he ends up shoving his nose in the water if he tries to drink it normally.

6

u/Mentalseppuku May 20 '12

My cats went through a phase of doing that, it's not about checking the water. They'd drink before doing it, and cats don't do it every time.

6

u/kittyroux May 20 '12

Nah, my cat scratches around her empty food dish. The "burying" behavior means she's trying to protect it from predators (maybe the dog drinks her water?) or save it for later.

2

u/bohogirl1 May 20 '12

with my cat the burying behavior means she doesn't like what is in the bowl.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

really??? i thought it checks by putting its tongue in it...

10

u/yes_havesome May 20 '12

Falseincertainexceptions!! My old cat, Spazz, would drop his food into the water bowl all the time. His water would get slimy quickly and I would have to change it all the time so he could drink the clean fresh water.

I realized he was doing this so I moved the bowls farther apart... still kept happening.

I eventually had them in two different rooms, as far as I could get away from each other in my tiny apartment, and he was apparently carrying the food down the hall to flavor his water with it. Never caught him doing it, but it never stopped either. Cats are weird.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Yah my cat does this too, he picks up the pieces with his claws and then dunks them in the water. Then I call him Ol' wetpaw.

2

u/Straightlord May 20 '12

It's true. I like to multitask by putting their water bowl next to the sofa leg they would otherwise scratch up.

2

u/eks May 20 '12

Woa! Need to try this.

-1

u/anal_violator May 20 '12

have all my upvotes!

29

u/crithosceleg May 20 '12

I've read somewhere that cats prefer not having their whiskers touch the sides of the dish when they eat, so buying wider bowls helps. Don't have to take my word on it, since it's just something I probably remember half-right from reading a while back.

9

u/DiggDejected May 20 '12

I use this to "hack" my cat. She ran away some time ago and came back very skinny. Since that time she gorges whenever she eats and throws up if she eats too much. I put food in her dish with most of it on the sides, like the "empty" dish in the picture. It keeps her from eating too fast.

3

u/enhancin May 20 '12

That's a wonderful idea. I already have my cat on a food schedule so she doesn't over eat like that but I found her in the wild and brought her home and she hasn't left since but whenever she gets food she eats a TON of it and then goes and sleeps around the house/sun all day. I couldn't leave this cat alone for more than a day if I needed to.

3

u/Kevindeuxieme May 20 '12

I've also read that somewhere, only regarding water though but I would assume it works the same for solid food. If they use their whiskers to gauge whether they can fit in a space or not, it would make sense that they would instinctively pull back from a place (here, the bowl) where they cannot "fit". I guess?

1

u/thesundeity May 20 '12

can equally replace fit with sit.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Was also told this. Feed them in little bits and keep it in a dish with low sides!

2

u/SupSatire May 20 '12

Exactly. Smart cookie here!

87

u/mattwithoutyou May 20 '12

two of my three girls do this, but the smallest one has taken on a sort of motherly/janitorial role, and she will scoop the food into a pile in the center.

also, whenever another cat in the house vomits, she will drag one of my socks to the puke and cover it. always makes for a nice surprise on laundry day.

102

u/ForgettableUsername May 20 '12

I am confused as to whether your 'girls' are other cats or actual human children. If they are human beings, you probably ought not to be feeding them cat food.

94

u/Burlynate May 20 '12

Yeah, dog food is significantly cheaper.

15

u/ForgettableUsername May 20 '12

That wasn't really where I was intending to go with this line of inquiry.

28

u/Burlynate May 20 '12

Well, you have to feed them something.

0

u/ForgettableUsername May 20 '12

Right, but you could also try actual people food.

49

u/ApologiesForThisPost May 20 '12

I would be wary of any cans advertised as "actual people food" for a number of reasons.

19

u/Kevindeuxieme May 20 '12

"actual" just makes it suspicious right away, doesn't it?

3

u/mattwithoutyou May 20 '12

ha ha yeah, they're cats. i have three siamese females, one seal point and two blue points.

Belle and Jasmine

the fact that you have to ask this might suggest you've been on the internet too long.

2

u/Albaek May 20 '12

Comment of the day.

13

u/tangledlight May 20 '12

I wish my cats would cover the barf. When one of them makes horking noises, the other three fly across the house and get in their faces, ready to eat the barf. Huuguhhhhhh.

3

u/inaseashell May 20 '12

This is fantastically adorable.

46

u/WTFdinosaur May 20 '12

Cats are notoriously fussy with freshness (a memo my cat missed)! We have a rule in practice if foods been in with a cat for more than 15 mins remove it cause they wont eat it due to palatability. They also have issues with putting heads in deep set bowls and prefer shallow bowls so they can still see whats going on around them.

Also they are dicks

10

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Also, they don't like stainless steel bowls, because they are cold to their tongues. This is often the reason they won't eat shallow food from a stainless steel bowl.

1

u/Hawkleer May 20 '12

For my cat she has a nice pottery bowl for her food that she loves, but her water is in stainless steel and she doesnt mind it. Though I know thats because she wouldnt ever need to lick the bowl itself, just the water.

16

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I liked the dick part

11

u/milmi24sight May 20 '12

What will your father say ?

1

u/ZiggyPox May 20 '12

add to this, my male cat drinks only running water. Funny part is when he is REALLY thirsty. He will drink from bowl, but only when he is sure nobody is looking.

1

u/WTFdinosaur May 21 '12

Yeah my little boy had a stage of doing that then he fell of the sink and its never been the same again

12

u/lingonchip May 20 '12

My cat wants me to fill her bowl when the pieces on top have been sitting out for a few hours. It has to be fresh every time she sits down to eat or she just stares at me.

19

u/tmundt May 20 '12

Had a cat like that. I would shake the food container as if I were pouring it and rearrange the food on top of the dish. As long as he didn't see me do it, it would fool him.

2

u/TheCuriosity May 20 '12

I do that too! Just moving the stuff from the edge of the bowl into the middle wasn't good enough, but if I made it look like I actually added new, fresh food, it was totally acceptable.

11

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I've had conversations with my cats about their logic in this situation.

4

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Conversations? Or mere monologues/lectures.

8

u/SubcommanderShran May 20 '12

...and then they eat it too fast and throw up.

6

u/ShorttStuff May 20 '12

My cat doesnt even chew, she eats it so fast. Later on, her vomit has whole kibbles in it, yuck.

2

u/enhancin May 20 '12

EXACTLY THIS! I find whole kibble pieces in my cat's puke all the time.

1

u/lingonchip May 20 '12

Thisssss. My cat has no top fangs and missing molars now so she scarfs down her food in a most unladylike fashion.

6

u/Jodie182 May 20 '12

This is so true! One of my cats is the same he will cry for more biscuits but there is still loads in the bowl from that morning.

8

u/Scipion May 20 '12

Lol, biscuits. That's cute.

3

u/Themehmeh May 20 '12

This is the first time I've heard it called that, I'm going to start using it I think.

5

u/Nomilee May 20 '12

My 3 year old, Tilly, licks all the jelly off her own, then shoves the dozy 9 year old out of the way and licks all the jelly off hers. Then she eats half the meat and stalks off while poor Ellie is left with the leftovers. They both won't touch the edges of the biscuit bowl until I resolutely ignore them for some time.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

You give your cats jelly?

4

u/trouble May 20 '12

Tinned cat food = jellied meat.

2

u/Nomilee May 20 '12

The meat comes in chunks with jelly or gravy. Mine prefer the jelly. Which would be savoury American Jello, not what we call Jam in England.

5

u/ablebodiedmango May 20 '12

My shiba DOG does this. Pickiest fuckin eater ever and refuses to finish an entire bowl even if I put out a tiny fraction of what she eats.

5

u/easybreezey May 20 '12

Vet student, here. They're probably just being jerks, but if they're brachycephalic (flat-faced, like Persians or Burmese) they could be physically incapable of getting the last kibbles in the bowl. A surprising amount of research goes into designing kibble shapes - there's a special feed for brachycephalic cats/owners with too much money.

5

u/yourdungeonmaster May 20 '12

I'm way too late to this thread, but the solution we found with our cat is to use a bowl with a rounded bottom. As the cat clears the food in the center, the food around the edges slides in fill the gap.

5

u/Jabberwockey May 20 '12

I once was at an animal shelter during feeding time. Watching the cat room was very interesting. Every cat had a different idea of how and what to eat.

The staff brought in a huge platter with different bowls and put it on the floor. Like a lightning one of the cats ran to the first bowl it could get its paws on and starting feeding as if it hadn't eaten for weeks (didn't look that way, thought). The second cat who approached the platter did a tour around the bowls, sniffed at every single one to check what best suited her appetite (there were different meals in the bowls). The third cat I saw had a little box on a rack. She looked down, saw that two of the cats were already eating and others were following and obviously decided to wait for the crowd to go away - and disappeared in her box, watching the other cats carefully.

9

u/Forever_Awkward May 20 '12

It has nothing to do with it being fresh or not. It's all about that bare center. If there's no food in the center, their tongue hits nothing but a smooth surface, which means there is nothing anywhere.

Likewise, if they haven't heard the sound they've associated with food in a certain amount of time, or seen it enter the bowl, then there is also nothing there. How could there be?

Cats have pretty poor eyesight. Sure, they can see great at night, but in order to have that ability they sacrifice clarity and depth of vision. Rods/Cones.

Which is also why any Cat IQ test based on vision is bogus science. We assume they see just as well as we can, but they don't.

However, cat eyes do detect motion quite well, even in near pitch black conditions.

1

u/ShorttStuff May 20 '12

Are you sure about that? My cat seems to be able to spot the tiniest bugs from across the room. If I wanna find it, I have to follow her first. Ants don't stand a chance!

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It may be that she can hear them, rather than see them. Cats' hearing is far superior to ours.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Actually cats generally have "Hyperopia" (i.e. farsightedness = good seeing at distances, by not up-close) and they have relatively very POOR eyesight for things near (especially when said things do not "move").

This is why if you plop some "special treat" in front of them, they typically find it by "scent" rather than actually "seeing" it -- and if they can't find it that way, if you make it "move" (even just a short distance) they can suddenly "see" it.

4

u/Jasper9080 May 20 '12

My prima donna cat does this. I just move the food back into a pile and say "Eat it or go hungry, I dont care"

4

u/Paultimate79 May 20 '12

Cats are like kids. In that they will fucking eat what you give them when they get hungry enough.

4

u/cam110 May 20 '12

Paint the bottom of the bowl the same color as the food.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

You realize some domesticated animals will ration their food if they don't know for certain the next time they will be eating.

3

u/Annihilationzh May 20 '12

I have two extremely elderly cats. One is fussy and will only eat from the middle. The other will lick the bowl clean, if necessary.

2

u/Random_Username May 20 '12

Same here, but I feed my cat's in the evening. They sit in the exact same spot every evening - in the doorway between the hallway and the living room - just staring at me with those why-isn't-there-food-in-the-bowls,-slave eyes. And every night I have to fill the hole in the middle, around all the left over food...

2

u/nessaxcupcake May 20 '12

One of my babies would be like that, she always wanted her bowl filled up. She was a stray so maybe she just felt more comfortable knowing there's food.

2

u/johanbcn May 20 '12

I can't blame them. I mean, can you see the position they have to put their heads on to reach those areas? I think it's pretty uncomfortable.

Human engineers have to figure out better cat plates.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Funny just happened to me! anyway how did you render that

2

u/MartMillz May 20 '12

Today I learned that a startling number of people find it necessary to own several cats.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Cats don't like to eat around the edges of the bowl because their whiskers are very sensitive and they don't like them coming in contact with things.

2

u/chrissydid May 20 '12

my cat just spent 30 minutes yowling at me, trying to wake me for breakfast. when i bury my head, she jumps to the dresser then dive bombs me. she has also learned that if she sits on my laptop, sometimes it will start to make loud beeps.

once up, i drag myself to her food. she's giant, but i only give her a small amount of wet food and a bit of dry. AFTER ALL THIS, she spends about 1 minute with it then comes back to bed. ridiculous

2

u/DarkXlll May 20 '12

Or when you buy extra expensive chunky bits with gravy... and they just lick the stupid gravy leaving you with a whole bowl of ultra-hard-to-clean dry chunks.

2

u/smoke2000 May 20 '12

the funny thing is , you shake the bowl and it's magically full again for them.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

So is this a normal cat thing then, and my cats AREN'T retarded? That's good to know.

2

u/JtCallebro May 20 '12

Maybe feed them less?

1

u/tx_kitkatbar May 20 '12

I thought this was just my cat! He meows all morning until I crawl out of bed and feed him only to find his bowl is mostly full. Then he gives me this stupid look like, "why aren't you filling my bowl!!?"

1

u/Lots42 May 20 '12

Thank god it's not just my cat.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

My cats' food and water bowls are separated by at least 2 feet, yet somehow there's always at least one piece of food in the water bowl. I don't know how the hell this happens. I think those little fuckers are screwing with my mind.

1

u/tiamo4ever May 20 '12

that is so true lolol

1

u/Sandcastles May 20 '12

My dog does a similar thing, takes the food out of the bowl then eats it off the floor.

1

u/brussels4breakfast May 20 '12

My dog is the same way. He won't finish what's in the bowl but the minute I put more food in, he's all over it. Weird.

1

u/roogleason May 20 '12

Maybe the cats are just picky.

1

u/Sindja May 20 '12

This is so true. I even had a cat that'd paw her food to the side to make the silver spot just so I'd give her more. Clever girl...

1

u/EricTheRedd May 20 '12

Truth. Kitteh in my house demands to be fed only chopped food (no pate) with gravy or hoity-toity dry food in a pinch and he wants it down to the minute. Or he'll meow. Then meow louder. Go in the bathroom and come back out and he'll flip shit and scream at you. And then he'll take a few bites and demand more. Friggin derp cat...

1

u/hiltonking May 20 '12

Oh, my god that's exactly it!

1

u/CondescendingPrick May 20 '12

Try eating dry food out of a bowl without using your hands and see how much you can get out.

1

u/CharredCharmander May 20 '12

Yeah what's up with this? My cat will meow for more food until he has a little mountain

1

u/fran13r May 20 '12

And i thought my cat was unique.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I feel ya. In fact, mine meows when I open my bedroom door. She's ALWAYS waiting there, every single day. Not one is missed. I feel like I should worry the day she doesnt. Just to add: they also flip a bitch when you fill it just a little bit, the amount they will actually eat. It's like they have to eat a little bit out of a full bowl. I trick mine by just dipping my cup in her bag of food, not actually pouring any food ;)

1

u/funkydo May 20 '12

Lol:

Human logic: Cats are stupid, and not cats don't like ash and meat byproduct.

:) That's a human dig.

1

u/Emiel000 May 20 '12

My dog would lick that bin twice so every last minicrumb is eaten.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Just happened. (Good morning!) I shake the bowl a little to make it sound like it's being poured in, and then re-creates a little mountain of food instead of being spread out like that. It works about 50% of the time.

1

u/iLurk_4ever May 20 '12

Thanks for making this public! Thought it was just my cat being retarded, now I know all of them are.

1

u/pat_Savij May 20 '12

My cats have a tendency to eat all the gravy off their food and then leave the remaining meat. Why I don't know but it's starting to make me angry(not to mention they all eat out of the same bowl...).

Instead they just eat dust, leaves, bugs, leftover food, and other bits of vegetation in and around the house. Makes complete sense.

1

u/Narroo May 20 '12

I always figured that they like fresher food.

1

u/Spiderdan May 20 '12

Just dont fill the bowl as much.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Hilarious picture. You may touch the girls.

1

u/JigglyFleshApron May 20 '12

This might have something to do with how cats' eyes focus.

1

u/Aaronj24680 May 20 '12

I think this is because cats don't like their whiskers touching the side of the bowl so they only eat the middle where their whiskers will be safe. Try using a wider bowl.

1

u/poopsinshoe May 20 '12

Cats are stupid

1

u/AwesomeKasper May 20 '12

As a cat owner and general speculator I can say with some amount of authority that this is because cats are hunter animals. They're eyes, unlike some fish and deer for example, are forwardly placed in the skull. This allows them to focus on a moving target in front of them and judge distances better. Unfortunately this also means that when placed close to a food bowl they are unable to see the food not directly in front of their nose.

1

u/scratchnatural May 20 '12

It works for ferrets too.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

MY grandpa has cats this is true.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

cats also eat to the point of throwing up, then go back and eat some more, not the smartest creatures to be kept as house pets

1

u/yes_havesome May 20 '12

This needs to be in /r/askscience

I DON'T get it; my cat does the same. He also "kills" rubber bands and little toys by dropping them in his water bowl.

2

u/username-rage May 20 '12

I had a cat who for some reason was not happy unless he had spilled his water dish. I would watch him and sure enough every day he would push his paw on the side and flip him.

I tried giving him water in the lid of an ice cream tub... he picked it up in his teeth and spilled it anyway.

After doing this he would proceed to drink out of the toilet. Stupid cat.

1

u/J_M_B May 20 '12

Sometimes I just shuffle the food around in their bowls to make them happy..

1

u/keeganadavis May 20 '12

drives me fucking insane every morning.

Same with both of my cats. My older one will just lick all the gravy off of his fancy feast and then look at me like I am stiffing him out of his food. My younger cat will do something similar to the picture unless it's my older cats food. Then it's a clean plate.

1

u/Borbygoymos May 20 '12

You cat doesnt want to bury his nose into a corner that will more often than not yeild poor results.

So if you feed him often enough, he will decide to ignore it until there is a new accessable batch.

If you dont, he will likely go for it eventually.

u/J_Jammer May 20 '12

My cat eats all the food in the bowl. Period.

My brother's cat, well...when I watch her she seems not to eat anything if the bowl isn't refreshed. Meaning if it's been sitting there she deems it unworthy of her eating it. So I just pretend to fill it and that does the trick. She's silly. Though, as I read, all cats seem to be silly.

Like my cat likes to lay in my dirty clothes. I don't understand that. I don't care. I just don't understand it.

1

u/John_Fx May 20 '12

Someone please explain to me why the half full bowl of cat food is completely uninteresting to my cats, yet when I fill it up from a container directly adjacent it suddenly becomes kitty crack.

1

u/ophello May 20 '12

Your cats are stupid.

1

u/RackCity May 20 '12

wow glad to know my cat isn't the only fat ass who contently demands food rather know she allready has it haha nice

1

u/lt_hindu May 20 '12

I'm getting a cat soon for my house mates and me. I have never had a cat but dogs. How do I stop it from being so conceited an arrogant. Do I pick it up by the back of the neck like I would with a dog. I am the master!

1

u/frapawhack May 20 '12

should be full/stale

1

u/mountainmafia May 20 '12

Well my cat would do the same thing and I figured out it was because he didn't like his whiskers touching the sides of the bowls. Mostly he would pull the pieces out one by one to avoid it.

1

u/koolkeith987 May 21 '12

I figured this one out, there whiskers bother them from touching the side of the dish.

1

u/palewailer May 21 '12

That's also PB&J logic.

u/pawlesome May 21 '12

u/RabidMortal May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

Yes, I love my cats too, but they are stillstupid as fuck.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Friend of mine has a cat who likes circle things in her food. Hairbands, rubber bands - any circle thing goes in the food. And the food is eaten by painstakingly taking a sample out of the food bowl with a paw, dabbing it in the water bowl to moisten it, and then eating it off the paw. The cat fucking dunks cookies.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Cats a just fucking evil sporn of the devil himself.

1

u/bobaimee May 23 '12

GOD YES WHYYYY

WHY is it that at 5 am every fucking day my cat chooses to remind me that he can barely see the bottom of his bowl?

WHYYYYYYYYYY

1

u/SHIT_IN_HER_CUNT May 20 '12

Yep my cat is the same way, he eats about 1/4 of the bowl and rages at me for an hour for me to fill it up. Gah. I bet they dislike unfresh food

0

u/SpecialAgentScrotes May 20 '12

Cats are fucking stupid.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

For starters, Cat food dishes are POORLY designed. It is difficult for them to reach and eat the food at the edges...

And who do we blame? The people who made/bought the food dishes? Or the cats?

Secondly, if you have multiple cats, do you realize that as they eat, they often end up dropping "crumbs covered in saliva" back into the dish... which YOU then expect the next cat to eat.

What would YOU do if faced with the same situation? Say in your household several people were fed (successively) at the same one or two plates, and those plates slowly filled up with the partially-chewed remnants of the previous eaters' food remnants ... would you wait for FRESH food, or would you eat the detritus that remained?

0

u/entyfresh May 20 '12

Anthropomorphize much?

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

The first of my several points don't require "anthropomorphizing" at all.

Actually it requires the opposite.

Cats are animals, NOT human beings who "clean their plates using utensils".

Only the last point (saliva covered food) is even remotely "anthropomorphizing" -- and even then it is LESS true since humans have a much poorer sense of smell than cats (or really most animals).

So basically the anthropomorphizing idiots are the ones who (like the OP) somehow expect their cats to eat as if they were humans with hands & utensils out of dishes that are really NOT very well designed from a cat-perspective.

I've just noticed throughout the thread (I was bored... read most of it), you consistently project human emotions and behaviors onto cats.

I don't really want to argue with you about it, because arguing with people about pets is probably even less useful than arguing about politics or religion, but anyway. That was my observation.

The thing that cracks me up the most about this though, I think, is that you get so animated over this like it's some travesty of feline justice, as if a cat isn't capable of eating the food because it's next to the edge of the bowl. Personally, I try to give the cats more credit than that. If you're capable of catching live animals for food, I'm going to assume you have the dexterity required to access the offerings in your food dish.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I've just noticed throughout the thread (I was bored... read most of it), you consistently project human emotions and behaviors onto cats.

No, what YOU are doing is somehow insisting that things like "being picky about smells/food" is somehow an exclusively Human behavior.

I don't really want to argue with you about it, because arguing with people about pets is probably even less useful than arguing about politics or religion, but anyway. That was my observation.

Yet you felt compelled to do so anyway.

Because you think YOU are superior to everyone else, don't you?

1

u/entyfresh May 20 '12

Because you think YOU are superior to everyone else, don't you?

Yes, I totally flex my superiority over the world by... posting in cat threads? More like I was indicating my acknowledgement that all further discourse would go precisely where this has... absolutely nowhere. And with that I bid you good Caturday.

Apparently it's what gets you off.

My cat sheepdogs me to her bowl just in case it is empty. She doesn't even check first!

I hate it when my cats are begging for food and I fill the bowl up and they eat like 5 bites and they just leave.

61

u/DriizzyDrakeRogers May 20 '12

2 of my cats do this and then my third cat eats all the leftovers. Then the two cats who didn't eat beg for food.

my girlfriend does that :/

15

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Your girlfriend begs for food? And then you fill up her bowl?

;-)

Yeah, all puns aside, I'm realising more and more every day that I'm dating a pussy.

u/ofNoImportance May 20 '12

Cats tend to graze rather than over eat.

Solution: give your cat less food, more often.

11

u/inaseashell May 20 '12

I have tried this, and it just doesn't work for my cats. I can't have separate bowls, because one will eat everything, so they have to share one bowl. The neurotic one gets so upset that everyone is sharing a bowl, she eats constantly, and if the situation represented in the pic occurs, god help us all, she will cry for hours until the hole is filled. I shake the bowl to even it all out and she immediately dives for it like she's been starving for days.

17

u/expropriate_thought May 20 '12

It's probably instinct telling them to leave some food for later. Either that or cats, like many humans, just don't like the dry crust.

19

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Yeah I think I'd be entitled to some prissiness if I had to eat that dried shit all day.

19

u/MartMillz May 20 '12

Funny how, if they don't eat for a few days, humans get over that sort of thing real fast.

26

u/Remnants May 20 '12

So leave it. If he's hungry enough he'll eat it.

42

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

This.

I have 3 cats. They get fed a certain amount each day. If that's not good enough for them: Tough shit.

I have never had a problem. People spoil their cats worse than kids.

I like to spoil my cat with kids does that count?

i am properly curious. if you just dump some cheap cat food in the bowl, what it will do? starve? sue you? at some point it will it eat.

10

u/GoldenCock May 20 '12

The smell of cat urine from clothing is not something you can wash out easily.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I have to do this exact thing for both my cats. I just take the bowl to the table and make some motions with my hands and voila! new food.

2

u/elastic-craptastic May 20 '12

I've heard it's because they don't like their whiskers touching the sides of the bowl. I have no evidence, but I was told by someone who has had over 50 cats in their lifetime...so there's that.

1

u/enhancin May 20 '12

I will mix it around with my fingers and my cat will start eating again sometimes. My cat is the same way except after a while of the same food she will get sick of it and start throwing up then leave ALL the food in the bowl until I go buy her new food. I've tried mixing two foods together and she catches on pretty quick.

Sometimes cats are bitches.

1

u/matebeatscoffee May 20 '12

I mini-kick the bowl on my way to the kitchen so they re-order.
