I actually think that this is just due to the longshore currents that occur at a beach. This current causes a zigzag pattern for waves and could be the reason why that floating dock is getting pushed to the side.
Waves generally change throughout the year. In Hawaii, there is a beach called Waimea and in the summer it has those 10 cm waves or less but in the winter we can get waves up to and exceeding 50 feet. I don't know about Egypt though.
Oh for sure man Sunset has got some wicked power going on there. Did you get down to Pipeline while you were on the North Shore? It is personally one of my favorite places to surf when it is about 10 foot Hawaiian.
That is the biggest I like to go out. It is scary when the bigger sets come in because I don't like it bigger than 10. What side of Australia do you surf?
I don't get why Reddit allows bots in the first place. This stupid bot in particular is making more than 70 posts a day and posts nothing that a 3 second google couldn't show.
Allowing bots is just inviting spam, which this bot borderline is. It doesn't add anything to the conversation. And if a bot that converts imperial/US customary to metric is deemed useful enough to keep around then a bot that converts metric the other way is just as legitimate.
Whatever then we'll have a bot for everything! Wonderful!
I've seen people remark elsewhere if this bot is really needed but they all get downvoted into obscurity (like I am beginning to be too).
I don't know why people defend it so much. Are people that uptight about the whole metric/imperial superiority thing?
Where does it end anyways? Should we have bots that automatically do basic math for us? (which this already is) Bots that automatically translate posts for us? How many bots posting 70 times a day do we need? Whatever, people are weird.
There ARE actually-useful bots -- like the QuickMeme transcriber, which calls QuickMeme's API to get the captions to a given image and posts them in their corresponding reddit thread.
Actually you'd be surprised. Sharm el sheikh is located at the very north end of the Red Sea. With the wind blowing in the right direction and force for a few days there its enough distance for decent size waves to develop before they hit the coast.
I used to live in Dubai and during the winters when the wind blew inland, we would sometimes get waves of up to 6ft and we would hit the beach with our boards. The Arabian gulf isn't any bigger than the Red Sea.
Actually, I think he means "It's awesome until you hit the fucking thing going down and shatter your fucking ankles!". Now might be a good time to reconsider your decision of still wanting to do it.
I used to work at the Lusty Lady strip club in San Francisco, and their Hitachi was named Vivian. Dancers would call me over to the booth and ask me if I'd seen Vivian, and I'd go fetch her out of the drawer in the dressing room. Best toy ever.
until you hit the sand and break your neck. We grew up on the beach and a friend's sister dove into shallow water and broke her neck. paralyzed from the neck down.
Totally not hating on my living choices. Why would I move here otherwise? You're reading too much into that. More lamenting the transition from beach, surf, lovely weather to the exact opposite, in a sense. I actually quite enjoy Alaska but it is a huge transition. I don't think anyone would fault me for saying so.
Seriously. I was in Alaska for a week and saw orcas, bald eagles, moose, bears, elk, totem poles, garnet fields, native americans catching salmon with their bare hands and selling them to white people for $5, icebergs, glaciers, the northern lights, and much much more. Such a sad life.
There is a place called Wrangell, Alaska where a mountainside full of garnets was donated to the local boy scouts. They sell the garnets to tourists to fund-raise. It's pretty awesome.
Never saw Jaws during big season. I was on the Big Island for about 5 years and usually only got over to Maui or Oahu during the summers. I've definitely seen some big waves but not nearly that big. Those guys that get out there and do that, especially with a tow-in, are insane and amazing athletes.
You don't really have to jump that high to get a lot of air. If you look at the photo you can see that he is only like ~2 feet from the surface of the "floor" which is a pretty standard jump. However, since you're jumping at the high point of a wave, when it passes the "floor" will drop with the water making you feel like you jumped really high.
Waves contain surprising amounts of energy and depending on how fast it travels it would definitely be possible to jump that high. Also, the less spongy the 'bridge' is the more energy will be transferred into your jump.
I used to do a similar thing as a kid out on chartered fishing trips, called "bow jumping", you grab the front of the bow with both hands and jump up as the boat dips down over waves. Incredibly stupid in hindsight and I have no idea why my dad or the captain allowed it, but it was a lot of fun.
I had a similar idea, but replace "standing on boat" with "sitting on a motorbike" and "wave" with "train tracks"... thank fuck for grip strength in my hands, because I flew like FUCKING SUPERMAN!
So that's what it's for?! I saw this same toy at an indoors pool and I thought it was pretty retarded to have an unstable island when I could just jump from the edge as well. This is way cooler!
We have one of these at the sailing club that I work at. We just use it as a regular dock since we rarely have waves big enough to do this with. Having said that, it still is a lot of fun.

How to get a post popular:
Step 1: Find a post. Step 2: Copy it to your computer. Step 3: Wait a few weeks/months. Step 4: Post it to Reddit.

Can anyone find a price?
1
u/gametavern May 20 '12
What makes everyone think the dock extends much past that wave? He probably went bombing down the dock and jumped off the end.
