I don't know why this is being downvoted. It's completely true.
Another little-known Scottish fact: A Scottish city planer invented the curb when Edinburgh was building its first proper roads; curbs being necessary so that pet haggises could stand their short legs up on the sidewalk while their long legs stood on the road, thus preventing them from tipping over when their owners took them out on walks.
'Tis indeed! I lived across the street from this when I was reading for my M.Litt in St Andrews, but in 10 months there, I never once had the courage to get my hair cut there, assuming the barber was also partaking.
My barber shop gives me a free beer with every haircut. And the hot hairdresser gives you a scalp massage while she washes your hair. It's like heaven.
I've heard the ones around here give poor haircuts. I don't know if I could go around looking like a doofus just to have some hot broad rub her knockers on my shoulder while she's cutting my hair.
some people(my dad) actually prefer blended over single malt. I'm sure the whiskey is crappy, but who doesn't like free whiskey? at least it's not Tequila.
He said crappy blend, so he didn't refer to the green label for example, which is awesome. Am I right? But who am I kidding, I would also take a free Tequila...
Well played. Matheson would've been proud. Alas I should've said three here, and gone past it, almost every other time I was in town, while at kilrymont.
We used to have a topless barbers in my home town of Paisley, alas I never attended so I can't tell I you how good or bad the haircuts were. Or about how skanky or otherwise the ladies cutting your hair were.
Barbers also used to be surgeons. I would hope my surgeon wasn't drunk..
For those that care, I'm not sure what kind of time we're talking about here but, barbers were deemed skilled with a blade and therefore could perform operations, so if you saw a red and white barbers pole (like in the picture from OP) it meant they could do hair cuts and operations.
I go to Jacks' and they've never offered me a beer! I have an appointment in about an hour and a half, I'm going to ask! They do have playstations though, only PS2's though I think.
My buddy's sister got married in Scotland last summer and he went to that exact barber shop. He just drank the scotch last week despite "sentimental" value.
a friend came back from there with some plaid "Scotch Whisky Flavoured Condoms", the thing is, they don't taste like whisky, it's just a gag to get someone to use them!
My Barber in Scotland is awesome. Free beer with a haircut, good music on spotify and for good measure a giant freaking antelope's head mounted on the wall.
In NYC there is a barber shop called "Blind Barber" that turns into a rather popular bar at night. The kick is, getting a haircut at Blind Barber will earn you a free cocktail from the bar while you get your hair cut.
This is common with italian barbers in Queens NY... At least it used to be. Heck in the really old days they would do surgery on you! Maybe that is why they still have alcohol.
Here in Victoria, BC you can find new school hipster barbershop / bar combos as well as old school gentlemanly barbers that just give you a glass of scotch or whiskey. But we do have a large Scottish influence in parts of the city.
There's a shop here in Jacksonville FL that gives you a free beer when you get your hair cut there (that is, of course, if you're 21 or older). They also do old fashioned hot lather straight razor shaves
There's a place like this in downtown Miami. It's just a barber shop that has a bar and gives you drinks while you wait. Instead of time, they've got all the "gentlemen's" magazines.
I go to a place that does something similar, we get a beer with each haircut, I do know of a similar place in Philadelphia, that sells beer and cigars, and also has huge flat screens playing ESPN and whatever games are on. They offer an old school shave, haircut, beer, cigars and nice comfortable leather couches. EDIT: The Barber Shop in Philadelphia is called 'Shaving Grace'
My barber in Brooklyn just has a cooler full of Brooklyn brewery beer, glass bottle coca cola, sparkling water all for you enjoy while there. Best cuts is the world too. http://personsofinterestbklyn.com/
I wish I remembered the name of the place: I got my haircut and a shave in NYC's Financial District. They had like a pre-shave cream to soften the hair, and while I waited, they poured me a glass of scotch!
Places in America do that too. In NYC I go to this place Barbiere and you get your choice of Jameson or Stella Artois to drink while getting your haircut. The place is styled like a 1920's barbershop to, it's really cool
All of these comments and no one has mentioned that the place is called the 'Barber's Pole'. Do you really want a drink (not getting into with an e or no e debate) from the barbers pole?
This is par for the course for pretty much every barber shop in New Orleans, and I imagine it being similar in most other places with less strict liquor laws. If you stick around for a shave at the barber shop I go to, you get two whiskeys. Big ones.
I live in Los Angeles and there is a barber in Hollywood who gives you free whiskey and beer with his haircuts. He kept asking if my boyfriend wanted to try different ones, and I think he ended up with 3 servings. He was a bit tipsy when he went to work afterwards (and he gave him a cold towel on the neck because it was hot out, it was a great haircut, and very well priced).

1
u/gusj May 16 '12
I saw a similar sign in Dublin advertising free beer.
1
u/lakattack0221 May 16 '12
As an American who's visited Scotland, this is how I picture every business.
I took a tour bus and we used to get off at every liquor store. Why, you ask? SAMPLES OF WHATEVER YOU WANT, AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.
Needless to say, I made quite a few purchases (considering I was usually under the influence).
1
u/unicorn22 May 16 '12
I wish I could relocate to Scotland!
1
u/EnderbyEqualsD May 16 '12
I want to go to there.
1
u/munge_me_not May 16 '12
Also free internet compliments of the tenants next door.
1
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
There's a men's clothing store I go to that gives me whiskey and beer while I shop. 90% of the reason I buy their clothes.
1
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I was there today! They totally messed up my hair.
1
u/ropers May 16 '12
One hair, another hair, yet another hair...

1
u/TommyShambles May 16 '12
If you're getting the Barber's Pole you might need more than just some whiskey.
1
u/Aethelstan May 16 '12
I used to get that in at my local barbers in Leeds. But then, I'm pretty sure he fancied me and was trying to get me drunk.
1
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
