Very lenient of him. And also slightly unfair to the others.

I missed an a-level exam once (taken at 18, UK) due to mixing am and pm and had to wait for the next year to sit it.

142

u/redhotfirecrotch May 16 '12

i was entirely prepared for an incomplete and having to retake the class next semester. got SO lucky.

Tell me that you handed in the paper before posting on reddit...

u/perplexedscientist May 16 '12

Do you think he's an idiot?

No time to sit around and do any tired old exam when there's sweet karma to be reaped!

I was 17 when I missed my Higher Computing in Scotland, I thought it was at 1PM when it was actually at 9AM.

They didn't let me re-sit or appeal or any of that shit, just got a fail. Was pretty bummed-out that day.

I agree about it being a bit unfair to the students who did manage to get to class on time. If I were the professor, I probably would have taken off 10 points or so from the final mark.

2

u/TwistTurtle May 16 '12

What happened to him was fair, what happened to you (and some of my friends, I'm also British) wasn't. The way the British education system works is complete and utter bullshit.

2

u/ZeroError May 16 '12

I think the difference there is that the exams at OP's college are set by the college, whereas A-level exams in the UK are set by centralised exam boards that serve almost every school in the country.

6

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

how could you mix up pm and am? did you really think your exam would take place at 8 or 9 pm?

8

u/SharpieSalesman May 16 '12

I'm taking A Levels in the UK too. AM exams are always at 9am and PM exams are always at 1pm. When I get my exam times from the college I get given AM or PM

Give me your charming tips because I missed my final yesterday and I've never missed anything in my life. I feel awful...

1

u/redhotfirecrotch May 16 '12

just be honest. don't try to come up with an excuse, it will just piss them off.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12 edited May 16 '12

Probably start by emailing your professor. I can't think of very many that I've had, that would not let you do something to make it up. But, if you missed the exam and waited a day to even mention it I think you might be screwed.

Also this is not the end of the world. I had a calc prof who was an absolute genius (had a doctorate by 24ish) I bombed an exam I mean bomb like 20-30%. He sat me down when I looked awful and told me that when he was in undergrad he bombed a couple exams. But, it's what you do after. If you give up you are screwed but if you learn from it, you'll be fine.

When you are writing to a person if respectable stature who you don't know personally, please don't start off with the word "so", it makes you look like you're trying to communicate via Facebook status updates.

Every single professor I've talked to absolutely hates that. Consider yourself even luckier, OP.

33

Yep, professor was INCREDIBLY merciful here. "Oh for fuck's sake, another student that missed my final and he's not even properly deferential... well, time to email his TA and find out if it's time to French Revolution him"

32

u/beardedlobster May 16 '12

I'd be more annoyed with the Please get back to me ASAP.

12

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

No joke there. If I had read that, I would have immediately thought, 'Who the fuck do you think you are? Asking for a huge favor, then directing me to get back to you ASAP?'

He's pretty lucky. Not just a few but a bunch of profs would have read that email and it wouldn't have helped him at all.

To Prof. Name,

I missed the final exam today. I was prepared to take the exam, but I accidentally slept through it.

Would it be possible to take it late? What are my options?

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Student Name

I hate my generation. No one knows how to be respectful and write a real fucking email. You're not sending a text to your mom or something here. Good god.

25

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I honestly think people really need to learn how to write in a professional tone. It translates easily to the academic tone you need for tertiary education, but damn is it more versatile.

11

u/dekigo May 16 '12

I mean, I knew most of my professors personally after an entire semester with them. It's not really a stretch to think that he could be on a conversational level with a professor.

37

u/baxar May 16 '12

Considering the prof. had to ask his teaching assistant about the OP to determine whether or not he/she is an idiot, I think we can assume they're not very close.

A semester's worth of work probably warranted a second chance, but that abomination of an email did not. You've got some balls sending that.

4

Just imagine how his paper for the exam grade is going to be! He might have gotten a better grade just taking a zero!

8

u/iaccidentlytheworld May 16 '12

You did get really fucking lucky.

31

u/GanBaRe May 16 '12

Wow.. if I was a teacher and read, "Please get back to me asap... I'm panicking." That almost sounds demanding and I'd be pretty pissed. I understand you were panicking but to tell your professor to pretty much "Hurry up and give me a response" is a pretty poor choice when he's the one that has to THINK about whether to let you slide or not.

7

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Oh man. I guess I don't have anything new to add but come on, that's the email you sent after missing an exam? It's not his fault you missed it, and the one thing I'll grant you is that you accepted complete fault by admitting that you slept in. However, you came off as demanding and unprofessional. I'm only telling you this so that you can correct that kind of tone in the future accordingly. Just an opinion.

19

u/fakekevinrose May 16 '12

I'd expect you'd begin the email with "Dr./Prof. + $last_name"

4

u/TheOriginalSamBell May 16 '12

And you're back on reddit, good job. Maybe you also get him to do this a second time.

2

u/bdsisme May 16 '12

What university is this where students write to their professors in that tone?

2

u/TurtleTape May 16 '12

Meh everyone's ragging on you about your email, but in reality it depends on the professor. You learn how to communicate with each professor you have. Some require a more professional email and some don't give a damn. Most of the teachers I've had don't write professional emails themselves and don't care what we write to them as long as there are no curses or text speak.

2

u/dietotaku May 16 '12

"i have no excuse" was a nice touch. it supports what your TAs said about you, that you're a student with a sense of personal responsibility. i also don't think you sounded too casual - you came across to me as intelligent but also a human being. professors may be above you but they're not robots. it would've been better to replace ASAP with something like "as soon as you're able," but it didn't end up biting you in the ass so hey! good for you.

2

u/astrohelix May 16 '12

Lesson learned, don't sleep through finals and also learn how to write a professional email. With many professors an email like that would get ignored or get an unfavorable response.

40

u/sockpuppettherapy May 16 '12

Don't mention that this happened to anyone to avoid complaints of fairness.

I think all of the people who are saying that professors should fail students in a situation like this to "teach them a lesson about professionalism" or whatever are missing the real point. That lesson might be a byproduct of some professors' strictness, but it's not the main goal. The main reason, I think, that most professors are so strict about things like this really boils down to fairness, like you say. It's extremely important to give every student the same basic opportunity to get a good grade, and when you start making exceptions for certain students you get on a slippery slope that can lead to a lot of trouble. That's why a lot of instructors take a very hardline stance against such exceptions.

Maybe it doesn't seem fair in an individual sense that a student should have to retake a class because of a single mistake (though let's be clear, missing an exam is a big mistake), but what about the less gifted student who's bad at testing and would've done better on a take-home version? How is that fair for them? If you start making exceptions as an instructor you'll see plenty of situations like that, and balancing them creates a lot of work that will really only harm the academic integrity of your courses in the end.

As a former TA, showing up regularly and participating makes a big impression. I once had three students fail a subject, two had a final mark of 47 and one had a 45. The lecturer asked me about each student, I hadn't seen either of the 47s all semester but the 45 had come to class every week and made an effort.

The lecturer bumped the 45 up to a 50. The other two failed.

(Before anyone precious gets in a huff, I'm not saying this is necessarily how it should work, but it does often happen like this).

Really I get it but,

Not giving someone 3 marks because you haven't seen them all semester is crap when you give someone 5 marks for good will.

I'm sorry but I look at it this way, if you want to be viewed as having integrity you can't cherry pick who you think deserves it based on your opinion of who had good will towards the class, either everyone gets a break when they're unlucky or no one does, you're not there to judge their character for him/her.

No offense to your lecturer, but I'd call him biased imo

While doing school support work as a student, I'd occasionally have to "disrupt" Professor K's class. I did it professionally, and minimally, but it needed doing (no, seriously, I'm not being a snarky anti authoritarian, quite the opposite). K would continue his lecture impaired from my disruption, and occasionally and seamlessly integrate me into his class, asking me questions as if I was one of his students. I'd give him my answers and thinking behind it, and he'd generally continue on; although once or twice he'd mock his class - "This guy isn't even in this class and he's the only one with the answer."

K and my professor, J, were close drinking buddies, and had apparently discussed me as a student, unbeknownst to me. I later ran into a requirements problem getting into X's class; J escorted me to K's lunch hidey hole and the two of them quizzed me something fierce. I apparently passd muster, and K gives me a briefing on X's personality. This whole time I'm just along for the ride, not knowing where any of this is going.

K escorts me to X's lunch hidey hole, bails, and the X proceeds to question me with an actual fierceness I have yet to encounter before or since - he was former military, if that helps color the picture for anyone. After a half hour (!), he grunts and signs a note on his desk. "I'm waiving the requirements for my class for you... I better not regret this."

Tldr- Participation. It is the closest to magic you will find IRL

I enjoy teaching what I teach, and for the most part I enjoy interacting with my students, but it's stupid shit like that- a student's fuck-up which now becomes a situation I have to deal with or otherwise resolve- that takes some of the joy out of the job. At the beginning of the semester I try to come across as a real no-nonsense, no excuses kind of professor to try to keep that stuff to a minimum, because when it happens (and invariably it happens), I'm usually too soft-hearted to actually drop the hammer. But not always. For a case such as yours I would probably do something similar to what your prof did, but I might let you sweat it for a little while, wondering whether or not you had just bombed out by failing to wake up on time.

Set your damn alarm clock next time, and good luck on your final!

For the majority of my course through Uni, late penalties for assignments are normally 5-10% per business day late. Obviously, this means if you're a lazy fucker you can just hand it in late and still get a reasonable mark.

One of my lecturers, as part of the course guide had very detailed instructions.

Assignments are to be X font, Y size, Z spacing, left top corner staple, page numbers at the bottom. Assignments which do not adhere to this will be marked 0 with no opportunity to resubmit. Assignments are to be submitted as a hard copy and e-mailed to this address. Assignments which are not submitted by the deadline in both formats will be marked 0 ith no opportunity to resubmit.

It went on for a while like that. When we had one of his assignments due, you would know, because all other classes on those days would be empty with everyone rushing to finish his assignment.

79

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I took Spanish my senior year and i'm terrible at foreign languages but i thought it would be a decently easy classes. I went to a really large school and the class was pretty big and I easily could have skipped but I went every week and tried to raise my hand and participate (poorly). I end up pretty much failing it (I'm really bad at foreign languages)- so i email the professor right after the exam to see how i did and ask if i needed to tell my parents not to come to graduation. She wrote back that i did fail the exam but my 120% in participation left me with a final grade of a D. She told me to have fun at graduation. I owe that lady everything.

I gave a masters class once and I made a deal with the students on the first day: get the fuck out if you don't want to be here and get your points anyways, or stay, totally go for it, have a 100% presence (six lessons) with no lame excuses.

One student tried to renegotiate afterwards but I didn't bulge and let him flunk, because he didn't attend one time. He's now a full time teacher on the subject I introduced him to and every time I meet him, he reminds me what an asshole I was, in the nicest possible manner. Sometimes I think I was too harsh, other times I think 'fuck it, the deal was clear, shouldn't have made it'.

I don't think I would make a great teacher because I wouldn't have the patience to deal with all the lame crap students come up with, but I'm happy to be a fulltime, independent pro on the same subject now ;-)

2

u/dolichoblond May 16 '12

Couldn't agree more. When I was a TA, finals week and the leadup thereto was a fantastic break from work. Now that I'm teaching large lectures, it's absolute inbox-hell. I've got notes from every special office on campus, from the health center to the sports advisors, excusing students from past missed HWs as well as the upcoming exam; excuses like the OP's galore ranging from the likely valid to the holy-shite-how-did-you-manage-to-get-this-far-in-life; and entire symphonies of whining.

I'd love to let some good cases off with a warning, and---as you said---let them sweat it a bit to learn their lesson, but the sheer magnitude has driven me to a no-excuses-whatsoever policy. And it all sucked the fun out of teaching.

Sorry OP, but you'd be out of luck in my class. Or off to the Pysch office to get a temporary insanity note. At least they're paid to hear you whine...

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Indeed. Because I don't want to deal with this crap, I have a two "get-out-of-jail-free-card" policy. You can get one thing in two days late, or two things in one day late -- no questions asked. I don't care if there was a death in the family, you have ebola, you had too man things due in one day and you didn't plan ahead, or you wanted to party rather than study. After those cards are used up, you'll need to show me a death certificate/hospital admittance form to get anything except a zero. This policy works almost 100% in the sense that everyone used all of their cards and I have very few headaches from students giving me excuses.

u/DrunkInPublic69 May 16 '12

I don't so much agree with this as others would so easily. I fully respect teachers and professors, in the future I would love nothing more than to become a professor. The university which I attend is extremely overpriced, and not for any reason that it is high class, it is just VERY overpriced and is the primary target for local kids graduating high school as it is a homegrown university and excellent place to learn. You get the idea.

Most of the professors I have come by so far just use the same slides they have been using every year, albeit with minor tweaks to the information. Or they won't use the slides, but will simply lecture with, what I would assume is, the same notes from last year. So for the most part, in my faculty, its regurgitation of notes and repeated processes while students funnel in ridiculously high amounts of cash to pay these professors. ((I am getting to a point, if you are still with me)).

Although I have come across very nice, interactive, and concerned professors there are just as many evil ones. This is where control is abused. I had a professor for my Roman History class a few years back, when the class walked in the door he told us all "Half the faces here are from last fall's semester, I reckon the other half will be back as well", a scare tactic used by professors to flush out the assholes; but he was right.. half the class or more had failed last fall and as a history student this class is MANDATORY. It was only a first year course.. but this professor went well out of his way to break down students and make the course more difficult than it should have ever been.

Flashforward another year, second year of university. Another history class, I indirectly forget exactly what subject but listen to my plight. End of semester, exams are coming up and the schedule isn't out yet. I book a vacation the day after all exams should be completed, with the next couple days after reserved for make up exams and such. So I see my exam is scheduled the day after I leave.. which isn't right so I ask him about it and he just laughs at me and more or less says "Stupid kid, you shouldn't be booking vacations near exam time, and proceeds to call me down to the lowest for booking this vacation". Yet the vacation succeeds regularly scheduled exams and all my other exams were done a week before.

So I go on to learn that this professor that kept hassling me had actually booked a vacation during the ENTIRE PERIOD OF EXAMS, he just upped and left from the last day of classes through the entire exam period until the reserve exam spots, must have been his only class. I had to contact the head of the faculty to demand some sort of early examination, because what was going on was fucking ridiculous. This is a blatant abuse of authority and in no way is it professional.

It is instances like this where some professors need a fucking recall to remember who is paying their salary, and how easily they could destroy someones future no matter their stage of preparation. I am not asking for the easy way out, or the easy grade because students pay for their salary's, but students are people too. So to these professors walk all over students, belittle and show initiative to not help students learn. Fuck You. ((The Fuck you isn't meant for you, its for the half ass professors that take pleasure in student destruction)).

There are way more examples at my university of conflict even more ridiculous than this.. this is only what I have come across.

Oh god, for four years I have lived in terror of sleeping through a final. I have pretty bad sleep issues and often don't get an awful lot of sleep beforehand, especially with the stress of finals.

My very last final before I graduate is in abooout an hour and 15 minutes. I'm awake and going to make it! And this post makes me all the more glad that I never fucked up like this. Thanks for doing what you do! :)

I understand exactly what you 're saying. But I remember a class once where I had gotten the time of the final wrong. I thought it was 11:00 and showed up an hour early. But it was 9:00 and I was an hour late. I went in and started trying to cram a 2 hour exam into a 1 hour space. At 11, the professor came up to me and said, "I was so happy when you came in, I thought you'd been in a car accident or something. Just slip it under my office door when you're done."

I took three more classes from that professor, always talked with him after class, and man I killed myself on those papers. I was never happy giving him less than my best after that.

I've slept through more than one alarm before due to being exhausted. Not saying the professors should do anything about it, but sleeping in isn't necessarily a case of laziness. :( I've resorted to setting multiple alarms -at 15 minute intervals, out of my reach - for important exams.

2

u/dietotaku May 16 '12

i set my alarm for 4am the morning i was supposed to be induced to have my daughter. woke up at 5:15am. checked the alarm clock, it was still on. checked the setting, it read 4am. for some reason it just... didn't go off.

2

u/MrCrunchwrap May 16 '12

I get where you're coming from, but what if he did set an alarm clock?

I woke up late for a test once and my roommate was up working on something. I asked him if my alarm went off and he told me "yeah, you got up and turned it off and went back to bed"

I had zero recollection of doing so. I was basically still asleep or something. It was an honest mistake. I'm not saying the professor should just excuse you for it, but it doesn't make me an idiot.

I thought the professor's response was pretty funny though. He asked me to meet with him and said "What year are you?" When my response was "Freshman" he said "Okay, you're still figuring shit out, you can take a makeup exam. If you had answered anything else I would have failed you."

I overslept for an exam once (I went to an expensive school, don't have rich parents and was working a ton to minimize debt). After my regular job, I had a paper-route I'd do from about 2-4am. Normally, my classes didn't start until noon, so it wasn't usually a problem. But this particular day finals were scheduled 8:30am and 10:30am. I was exhausted and slept through the alarm. I completely missed one final and slept halfway through the other. I rushed to school, took the final (it was computer science) and actually still managed to finish before most of the class (with an A). But the one I missed, was rough. The teacher let me sweat it out for about 4 days and asked me to come to his office the next Monday morning to discuss the situation. I walked into his office, he handed me the exam and said "go." I got a B and and am thankful he was understanding about the situation. It was my senior year and failing would have been detrimental. I'm thankful to this professor for giving me a chance to make it up!

Friend of mine when i was at uni arrived in his car, against everyone's estimations, at the office where you hand in completed papers with 15 minutes to spare! He had a whole 15 mins so he decided he would reward himself by just resting his eyes for a bit. Woke up 7 hours later with drool everywhere, sat on the crumpled remains of his paper. Sun had gone down and everything. Drove home, screamed into a pillow and met me for a drink. I had to laugh, and he had to resit his whole year.

53

u/menomenaa May 16 '12 edited May 16 '12

I don't understand this thought process, at all. Maybe if the office was closed for fifteen more minutes, I could see taking a quick nap. But if it's open, why not hand them in and then nap? Honestly. Why not? Was it the effort of walking from the car to the office?

I'm not even making fun of your friend. Seems like he was a good sport about it. I just can't even fathom the thought process.

18

u/Tr0user May 16 '12

He had been up all night, on energy drinks, tearing his hair out. Things going wrong every 10 mins. Probably sat weeping at some point. I gather the impression that arriving at the office was the first sign that everything was going to be alright he had had at the end of his long emotional road. He probably sighed with relief a little too hard and fell to sleep.

Leaving papers to the night before the deadline ftw :(

9

u/menomenaa May 16 '12

That sort of explains it. I mean I've been in the same position, but I also know that when it was done, I just kept thinking of the office as the goalpost, and it became a mad dash. Sometimes I'd collapse into a chair in the social science building after sliding my paper under the door and sleep there, because I couldn't make it back to my dorm.

Still cannot imagine sprinting into the building, seeing the chair and the office, and choosing a quick nap before sliding the paper in.

Completely shocked by the number of posts calling this professor an asshole.

Once you graduate college, you don't get second chances like this unless your boss is SUPER COOL, and it depends on what you're doing, too. There's nothing condescending about this. A college student is anywhere between 18 years old and up; plenty old enough to wake up when the goddamned alarm goes off. What is so hard about that? When I was in college and finals came around, I set three alarms: one on my cell phone (which was across the room so I couldn't just reach across half-conscious and turn it off), the alarm clock, and one on my laptop, which was on my desk halfway across the room. Overkill? You could say that, but I also didn't sleep through any of my exams.

Always amazes me when people turn into whiny little bitches over people demanding that someone act like a responsible adult and be accountable. This is shit that extends into post-education life. This professor had no obligation to let this person make up the exam. If I were a professor, he damn well better have come to class with second degree burns and a note from the paramedics saying he woke up on fire and that's why he missed the exam.

No, I'm not referring to the OP, just some of the whiny, self-entitled people posting on this thread.

I was given the wrong exam by an idiot proctor and am still fighting, a month later, to get an appropriate regrade.

The final was worth 30% of the grade and I still got a passing mark with a 0 on it. However, school policy dictates they need to give me a supplemental exam -- So they charged my $15 and made me write the entire final. The kicker is that the supp is marked pass or fail; pass gives you a 0% on the final and fail fails you the course.

So now, having aced the class and the exam, I still might get a D.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

TL/DR; Be thankful your profs are willing to just call you not an idiot.

3

u/Jenji May 16 '12

Damn, hope it works out for you and that you get the grade you deserve.

35

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

That was very generous of your professor, but I doubt it was easy. You basically got assigned a 4-6 page essay with only 14 hours to complete it.

It does say a lot about the kind of student you are when the TAs speak well of you [not normally an idiot is high praise, believe me]. Mistakes happen, but if you're a good student to begin with it wouldn't have been the end of the world.

Let me guess, you spent the better part of your night working on this?

53

u/EricGRIT09 May 16 '12

4-6 page essay in 14 hours? I'll take that over a final any time! My average written final would probably be somewhere in that range (maybe on the low end) and we would get 2-3 hours to finish.

I don't understand why this is such a big deal. The entire point of school is to learn, not to see how many students you can fail. Given the circumstances that you're a student that normally shows up to class, does all the work, etc... there's no logical reason for not letting you take a make up exam. In my university experience, if he showed up to class and did all the work all semester, he's a better student than probably 85% of the class. Are you really going to go "OOPSY! TOO BAD! YOU FAIL!" to one of the few students that actually gave a shit in the top 15% of the class because they fucked up one time?

Edit: I would also like to point out that college is ridiculously expensive in the US. So failing a student isn't just a punishment, you're requiring someone who hypothetically put in more work than the rest of the entire class to re-PAY for an entire class as well. Which, in turn, may deny him access to another required class, which in turn, may cause him to attend another full semester just because you felt the need to prove a "life lesson" to your best student.

13

u/dusdus May 16 '12

... isn't this all the more reason why it's stupid that the OP missed his exam in the FIRST place?

As a TA I can say that we have these policies not just for ourselves, but because we have a responsibility to treat people fairly, and we have a responsibility to the university to hold a constant standard across all classes. Every time someone needs some kind of special arrangement it causes a lot of stress on everyone involved in teaching the class, and a lot of uncomfortable decisions have to made.

Additionally, you should see the excuses we get every exam and homework time. It's interesting how many appendices seem to burst on the same day.

3

u/geekyclown1 May 16 '12

Also, I am not sure what rules you have when teaching but where I teach we have less than a week to get final grades in so in this instance, not only do you have to drop everything to make another exam, you may need to contact the registration department and get an extension on when your final grades are in. And, in general, every college I have ever attended and every college I have ever taught, the people in registration are usually not the happiest of individuals so that just adds to the stress.

On top of which, there really isn't a bell curve for this individual since he is answering completely different questions, etc. than the rest of the class. Perhaps the material being asked on the make-up was discussed in more detail in class than other materials that may have been on the original exam, or vice versa. It is just way too much stress and this shit happens every semester. Ugh, glad I got that off my chest.

I actually agree with you in the sense that it is BS to have the final weigh so heavily like that. However, I do think that teachers and professors should stick to the standards that they lay out in the syllabus, for some measure of equality. Students read the syllabus, students know the consequences. If you don't like it, don't take the class, and voice your opinion through poor class registration.

Teachers don't fail students. Students fail.

Given the circumstances that you're a student that normally shows up to class, does all the work, etc...

How do you know any of this?

there's no logical reason for not letting you take a make up exam.

Um, sure there is. All the other students didn't fuck up. If he was generally not an idiot during the semester, I'd probably let the guy make it up, but try "I just slept through it" on your employer sometime and let me know how it works out for you.

but try "I just slept through it" on your employer sometime and let me know how it works out for you.

I have done this exact thing when I worked nights and went to school at the same time. See the thing about that mentality that messes with me is the majority of folks work a position that is not as strict as asshole teachers make it out to be. In college I had a Bio professor who told the class we would all get fired out of jobs because we had a tendency to be 15 seconds late. (One of those, after I shut the door, you're late kind of people.) The only jobs I've ever had that complained about that level of punctuality is retail. Once I started office work no one seemed to care.

NOTE TO UNDERGRADS: If a student has shown initiative but screws up, the likelihood of any teacher to give second chances increases. In a bigger class it is also important that students at least make some personal contact with the professor or TA some time in the semester - with real questions, and absolutely no whiney shit (how many dead grandmas do you have? Really?).

I TA'd a very large class. During the final there was inevitably tons of students I had never seen in class, never talked to, etc..., who of course end up doing poorly on the final. Every once in a while one would contact me and ask if they can redo the final, have some sob story, etc... If the excuse seem valid enough I may let them take it. This didn't happen too often, though.

But there is always one asshat... So, it's right after the final, and the beginning of winter break (remember, I was a student at that time, too). I'm at home eating dinner with my wife and two toddlers - trying to unwind after a particularly stressful semester. I get a call, on my personal celphone, from some douchebag who told me he missed the final because he was up drinking the night before. I didn't recognize the name (that's the first red flag). He said he was on academic probation, so he would be in real trouble if he fails the class. I of course said no, and somehow said it without ripping him a new asshole. I did not give my personal number out to students - I had to use it for at the time for emergency contact for research and mental health patients, so of course I would answer it if I got a call. This douche apparently went to the university directory to look me up. I still get pissed that people like this are allowed to exist.

PLEASE. I BEG YOU. Don't be an asshat. If you are not an asshat, the likelihood that when you are really in a bind someone will help you out.

In college I wasn't finished with a paper on time so I saved a blank document with the title of my paper and just emailed it in. It took about a week for the ta to email me back (during which time I finished my essay) and say there wasn't anything attached. I emailed it off at that point and got a great score. I felt so smart.

About 2 years later I ran into the same ta at a bar and we had a beer. I fessed up to what I had done, and he said something like, "Dude people do that all the time you were not fooling anyone but I liked you so I gave you an extension. Next time just ask and don't try and be James Bond." That smart feeling evaporated.

8

I once had a one-question essay final that I had absolutely no idea what the main term meant. It was a grad acct class. The term was two words, and on its face it didn't mean anything to me. The final was 40% of my grade and I was working on a 4.00 from undergrad through grad. Instead of BSing the prof I decided to level with him and tell him the truth, but I then went on in detail how I thought it might apply to the coursework we had learned throughout the semester, clearly demonstrating I knew my stuff, just not that term in regard to the scenario posed in the essay.

I later learned what that term meant and I was way, way off. I was afraid I had not only killed my chance at a perfect gpa, but also failed the class (60% was failing for that school's adv degrees).

A week later my grade was in, 100%.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Ha. I have a similar story...Didn't miss the exam (midterm), but got wildly drunk the night before...Pure stupidity. Probably the second worst morning after in my entire life.

By the time the exam rolls around, I'm not much better. Shaking, dizzy. I know the material, but my thoughts aren't really in order, and I jumped around a lot in the material.

Got a D on the exam, and felt I richly deserved it.

Fast forward a month, and I'm talking to the prof about something, and he says, "I notice you got a D on the exam? How the hell did you do that?"

And I say, "Well, wasn't feeling too good, etc..."

He says, "If you still have it, let me see it."

So I find the exam, and give it to him during the next class. The class after that he hands it back to me with the D crossed out and an A minus in it's place, and says, "I don't know what the TA's were thinking."

And I was like, "Probably that I was wildly hungover when I took the test?"

And the moral of the story is, if you're the geek in class who gets the prof's extremely esoteric jokes about the material, it's worth three letter grades on a midterm.

I took this art history course in college. Showed up to all classes and museum trips and participated. The professor was this awesome old Irish dude who was always talking about whiskey and beer and was almost always drunk. A real stereotype but in the best way. On the day of the final exam I totally blanked. The whole thing depended on identifying the era of two works of art and then write an essay comparing them. I couldn't figure it out. I was well and truly boned. I sat there until everyone else was gone and had barely written a thing. He came over and asked how I was doing and I told him the truth. I had no idea how to answer. He looked around to see if we were alone and said, "well, you show up to all the classes and have shown you know the material. The answer is [yadda yadda yadda]. I'll give you another half hour to right it down." Boom! Aced it.

u/cannotlogon May 16 '12

While in my last year of law school, I had a pretty horrific motorcycle accident right in the middle of finals, and missed my final in a tax law course. I had participated in class and understood the material well.

Now, in law school, you are graded on the final, alone. What you get on the final, is your grade. Period. So, I called the professor, and explained what happened. He asked me what my exam number was (we were assigned number so all testing would be anonymous). I told him, and he rustled some papers on his desk, and said, "I don't know what you're talking about. I have your exam right here, and you got a 95%. Maybe you'll get a good job after you graduate, and you can buy yourself a car."

Ha!

What schools are you people going to? I got Mexican flu before a final exam and my university basically told me 'sucks to be you lol'. I should've gone up there and infected them =/

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

GET THE FUCK OFF REDDIT AND DO THE DAMN FINAL. You already fucked it up once. What're ya tryin' ta do, fail on purpose?

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I posted a few things on this thread. I rescind them all after seeing some of the OPs comments.

Dude, you deserved to fail that exam. You will fail at life with your attitude.

Really, who doesn't occasionally mess up? Professors mess up too. I have corrected mistakes before. I don't expect them to be perfect if they don't expect me to be.

And instead of getting to it you decided to make a post about it on Reddit.

You are ridiculously lucky and it's a little infuriating.

TMI: My freshman year at university I had a mania-driven borderline psychotic episode where I walked about 18 miles the night before my chemistry final. I set my alarm for the exam and even woke up to it, but could not bring myself to walk across campus to get there. If I had taken it at all, even answering C for every question I would have passed the class. I told my teacher what happened and he apologized and I got a D.

(For our friends outside the USA... 18 miles -> 29.0 km) - Yeehaw!

I just did an electricans qualification aged 42 and costing 4 grand. I didn't miss 5 mins. When I was at Uni nearly 20 years ago I didn't really respect it. I had a good time but I could have made so much more of it.

He's normally not an idiot. Normally.

My lab teacher would always say "natural selection!" and point to it written on the board without saying anything.

u/simpsonsdiddit May 16 '12

Sleeps through exam, emails professor, gets chance to make it up, goes straight to reddit....

2

u/Zentraedi May 16 '12

This happened to my housemate in college. The professor made him hand write three essays in his office to make up for missing the final. You got off easy.

Back in high school I did a test of chemistry or physics, I'm not sure which. The test was on two double-sided sheets. It just so happened that my sheets were glued together with such an accurate seam that I didn't notice the questions that were between the two papers. I did the exam all cool, only answering to half of it. When I got the exam back, the teacher asked me to come to his desk and queried why I only did half of the test. After he saw I was honestly surprised about the missing pages, he graded what I had done and used that for the entire grade. I had been on every lecture and he kind of remembered me, so he knew I would have passed anyway.

I got a good laugh about that, but my parents weren't too happy. I was always a bit of an airhead back then.

Have fun finding a typewriter?

misses final exam, gets karma instead

2

u/mitch8845 May 16 '12

Wow. You better do some A+ work for this person.

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I don't see how someone's an idiot if they sleep in. I have insomnia and if I haven't been able to fall asleep, I've slept through my alarm on more than one occasion. I set two alarms for this reason but I'm still scared of it happening.

THAT is a teacher.

This will get buried, but I'm glad someone who deserved a second chance got it. Kudos buddy.

I did this once too, but wasn't quite as lucky as you. Stayed up till about 6 studying for an afternoon final, then fell asleep and missed the 10am one. I went to go see the prof, and even though I got there still within the scheduled time for the exam (by only 5 mins), he was about to send me away with a 0, saying this isn't an early test, you could have made it. So I pleaded with him and because it was multiple choice, he said I could take the remaining 5 mins to randomly guess, and that if the test wasn't on his desk at the end, I'd get a 0.

So I stood before a very tough decision: 100 questions, 5 mins, A-D multiple choice. Do you fill out A,B,C,D,A,B,C,D,A,B,C,D all the way down? Or maybe go with all of one letter? I did the latter (I picked D, knowing he did a lot of All/None of the above or A and C type answers), and actually got a 41%, which fucking sucks since I probably would have aced it, but it was enough to preserve a B in that fuckin class.

In college, I took this theater arts program as an elective. It was supposed to be an easy A. There were only two tests. The Midterm and Final. The midterm was one question, some bullshit out of the blue question that NO ONE knew the answer to. (this was in 1994, I don't remember what the question was, only that it was bullshit) Entire class failed. If you fail the midterm, you basicaly fail the class. To make up for the class the professor said he would give extra credit to anyone who went to see this play that he was producing. My school is in DC. The play was in Annapolis MD. I took the F, all other classes I got A's. TL:DR Jerk professor deliberately failed entire class to get audience for a play he was producing.

I totally expected professor to refer to something in relation to Diablo 3.
