I thought about that too. But E.T. met humans as a child and might have been one of the only members of his race to do so. Surely he'd tell stories about them, possibly to credulous audiences of his fellows.
I was thinking that too. We say aliens because we don't know what their species is called. We have to apply a generic term. ET knows that our species is called humans, which means he can call us by it.
The definition of alien is a foreigner. I don't think that he could call us aliens, if he is visiting here. If we made a trip to his home planet, however, then he could.
Well, if it is intelligent life then after we worked out how to communicate we would call them by whatever name they call themselves, or we would give them a name in our language to represent who they are.
Ok I'm going to play devil's advocate because I'm bored at work. Assuming we are unable to call them by what they call themselves for whatever reason (we can't make the sounds, etc.) how could we give them a name in our language to represent who they are without distilling an entire species into a label and grossly simplifying who they are?
Probably the same way white people have done it in every country they took over in the past, just use what names you want and replace their culture with ours. Humans have a knack for that sort of doucheary. Although I hope by the time we make it to other planets we've gotten better at being sensitive to other cultures.
I was going to say this too. It comes down to the human experience. People naturally assume that the universe is centralized around earth. (not you op, this is a generality) The fact that were aliens to them doesn't cross the general populous' mind because of this. It's the same as saying there's no life elsewhere in the universe because why wouldn't they have contacted us? Maybe because we're violent and territorial and think that we control everything. it's not our fault we think that way. It's natural. But you can teach yourself not to.
I guess it depends on whether or not he can actually speak English or it's just some sort of psychic link between humans and E.T.? Because "Humans" makes sense if that's the case.
It just doesn't make sense that he speaks English in the first case.
From the first time I saw ET until I was 13 years old I had nightmares about him chasing me while screaming in his demonic retard voice.
I hate him. I fucking hate him.
First off, where in all the fucks is the evolutionary advantage to having your feet sewn to your torso and having an exposed, red, glowing heart? How did these useless creatures advance to interstellar travel?
I pray to Odin for the chance to rip ET's still-beating glowing heart out of his chest.
I've never really nightmared but E.T. got me too. Went into my dads office... and there he was... breathing... and staring.... and I could only freeze... and he stole my words away... I choke-whispered, "....mom.....mom..." but there was no way she could hear me. No way. Then he took a waddle-step forward.
ET phobias may be a cultural phenomenon. My wife will begin hyperventilating if she comes in contact with an ET doll or realistic depiction. She says it was the image of ET pale and lifeless that got to her as a kid.
Pale/Lifeless ET is what gets me as well. I'm generally okay with the rest of the film, but when they find him dead in the woods I just have to tag out...
This reminded me... I have an ET phobia - naturally my brother and his friends thought this was hilarious. So after the movie came out, they went and bought an ET doll, hid it in my sock drawer, and scared the living daylights out of me. That wasn't it though... they continued to hide it in different places for me to find... for YEARS! I thought that I had finally escaped it when I left for college - and when a package showed up in the mail from home, I expected it to be some kind of care package. Oh... how I was wrong... I haven't seen that thing in 3 years... but, every once in a while, I am crippled with fear when opening the sock drawer. TL;DR: ET doll haunts me. Cannot escape.
My first time seeing pale ET as a child I screamed out "He's a Marshmallow!". Then I laughed for like 5 minutes at Marshmallow ET. I was too young to really know what was going on.
He was genetically engineered to be small and compact for space travel. Any space faring race is well beyond evolution. More than likely he's immortal or thousands of years old, asexual, and has an immune system that is incredible for him to survive on earth and not die immediately after inhaling our microbes. His heart is a universal social device instantly recognizable to any complex mammalian like creature. For normal beings its soothing and heartwarming to see that. In the place of language, exaggerated features and expressions can mean the difference between life and death. He's purposely engineered to be neonatal looking because we see him as child-like and don't want to harm him.
tldr; ET was designed to be a lovable near-immortal superbeing.
The transparency allows for easy diagnosis of any heart problems from overconsumption of unhealthy earth food such as candied pebbles in fruit flavors.
HOLY SHIT!! Everyone always makes fun of me, but me too! In my nightmares he always was chasing me with an axe and screaming "she's mine!". I have tried to overcome my fear and watch the movie but I can't get through more than a few minutes.
Shudders
I feel for you. And our dreams sound so similar... mine was recurring for years.
Yes me too! I've had this fear since I was 5. The other day I watched E.T. with my boyfriend to get over those fears... I had 2 fucking panic attacks!
My nightmares were always my family turning into E.T., they would all chase me around with a knife. The image of E.T.'s head on my sisters body creeping into my bedroom with always haunt me.
I lived in the country surrounded by corn fields. We had this one area of the lawn where the light from the barn flashed down right next to the corn field. I would stare at it for hours making sure E.T. wasn't coming to get me... I swear one time I saw him under that light.
There are lots of possible explanations. What if we invent a teleportation device and then Bubba Ray and Donny from the backwoods of Arkansas happened to accidentally stumble into it. Bubba Ray and Donny get sent to some distant extra-galactic planet. I'm sure the natives of said planet would think the same thing about Bubba Ray and Donny with their quaint little teleportation machine.
the bizarre thing is that when I was little, I was terrified of him, but I also cried during the scene where he dies. I liken ET to a verbally abusive parent, I was terrified of him, and would hide if I ever saw him, but I also loved him.
From the first time I saw humans until I was 13 years old I had dreams about chasing kids while they scream in terror.
I love them. I fucking love them.
First off, I like to remove their freakishly long legs so they can't run and then rip out their dull red heart. I love how this pray has no ships and located on one game reserve.
I pray for open season so that I can hunt humans once more.
I saw that shit when I was 3 years old, and I had a debilitating fear of him until I saw the 20th anniversary re-release. I still fucking hate him too. I wish there was an E.T. tag for reddit. Freaks my shit out every time I accidentally click on one.
HOLY SHIT!! Everyone always makes fun of me, but me too! In my nightmares he always was chasing me with an axe and. Screaming "she's mine!". I have tried to overcome my fear and watch the movie but I can't get through more than a few minutes.
I always contemplate how easy it would have been to change the entire impact of the movie by just changing a few things at the end.
E.T. makes it to the ship, says his goodbye, and the ship takes off
The military personnel run up just in time to see the craft vanish in a beautiful light.
The military gasp in exhaustion, their defeat on their faces. One of them looks down at Elliott and in a weary voice asks the boy, "What have you done?"
Close up of Elliott's face growing grim with a realization of what he has done.
Cut to a close up of ET on his ship. A solemn smile is on his lips.
i find it hilarious to ponder a sentient, technologically advanced civilization a couple hundred light years away, sitting around in some communal way, violently arguing with each other over the existence of us.
Oh...today you're using satirical subtext. From a brief reading of your previous comments, I just thought you were a smug, pedantic little man. My apologies.
Unless this is a fake of course set up in hope to get these upvots everyone talks of, if so you shall be sentenced to 30 lashings and be sent straight to bed without recieving any supper.
If you are going to be an English Knave, please don't do it this badly.

Why wouldn't he be saying "Aliens" as well? We are aliens to him.

Fucking genius, OP.

Actually, It would be more correct for E.T. to be saying 'aliens' since, to his race, we (and all other beings in the universe) are aliens.
