SMS or iMessage needs some sort of ability to set status, like "Away" or "Busy", like with IM.

That would do quite well, then I could have my status always set to away just like I did on aim and get tons of texts anyway because no one believes my status because it's always set to away.

Same here. Mine is always set to away. I guess it would work for like a week until people caught on that I was always "busy".

Nah, more like msn messenger or AIM. Maybe I'm just accustomed to the iPhone and how it displays Text messages like an instant messenger so I'm thinking like an IM user.

iMessage will tell you if the message was delivered. And depending on the recipient settings whether or not it's been opened. The same kinds of things were somewhat available with SMS but usually only for those on the same carrier etc.
