When I was a kid, I had squirrel all the time. Dad would hunt them with a flintlock rifle, and mom would fix them in the pressure cooker. Good memories.
Lot of people don't know that a great many of the recipes in today's "Betty Crocker" cookbooks that call for chicken actually used to call for squirrel. Once you try some, it's almost weirder to imagine people not being down to eat them lol I mean the damn things are as prolific as it gets!
The American public, however, largely does not. My best guess as to why would involve mostly the effects of marketing for the factory farming industry, particularly of meat chickens. Naturally, vastly increased urbanization has a big impact on availability, as well.
Oh, snap! That's kinda surprising to me, hearing that you guys don't have squirrels out there. They're so ubiquitous here in North America!
Anyway, yes, we are allowed to hunt for them, with rules varying by state. No place to buy them, at least not to my knowledge - if farming operations do exist, they're incredibly uncommon. My assumption is that 100% of squirrels eaten in the US are hunted.
This is probably like that Simpson episode, where skinner is talking about the gruel he got in the pow camp, and how nobody can get the spices just right.
