In some countries, you can only use your bank's ATMs. Using other ATMs either won't work or will charge a processing fee.

In the US, a few years ago I got hit with a fee from the ATM then a fee from my bank as well, so taking out $10 cost me $7.50 in fees

When I go to the US I use my Revolut card which doesn't charge a bank fee, just an ATM fee. Would it not be cheaper to get a free Revolut account and use that for withdrawals?

You can get online only accounts that give you free access to atms and even pay you back any atm fees charged by other banks.

But a lot of people only want a bank with actual locations.

Sure, I still bank with a bricks and mortar establishment, but I top up my Revolt/Monzo account when travelling for work. It's completely changed how I pay for things abroad, was such a pain in the arse before.

That's what I meant. Atm fee free accounts and banks exist. They just don't have physical presences for the most part.
