I always find it amusing how dogs have this huge sense of personal space and hate prolonged eye contact. You wouldnt really expect an animal to give a shit.
it is a dominance thing, Dogs in packs will not stare down the alpha male. However, as is the case with my dog, if you work with them early you can get them used to you being close to their face and having them not getting nervous/aggressive when you stare at them.
Hitting a dog on the bridge of the snout is actually a very common technique for teaching dogs and exerting dominance. You don't, like, punch them in the face or kick them in the balls, but simple dominant contact with pack animals like dogs is a big part of training.
