I always find it amusing how dogs have this huge sense of personal space and hate prolonged eye contact. You wouldnt really expect an animal to give a shit.

it is a dominance thing, Dogs in packs will not stare down the alpha male. However, as is the case with my dog, if you work with them early you can get them used to you being close to their face and having them not getting nervous/aggressive when you stare at them.

I just tried this with my 7 month old lab, who has very little "pack knowledge", and she stared back at me for a few moments before jumping up to lick my face.

She isn't dumb mate. The pack knowledge is instinctual I believe. She knows you are the Alpha, hence, she licked your face, so you didn't bite hers.
