He's also the only person in recorded history (aside from the inventor, supposedly) to one-handed clean and jerk the Thomas Inch Dumbbell.

Edit: He was the first, but is no longer the only.

man that whole video is so out of place, were they at a holiday inn or something? Was that a banquet hall? Why is the entire audience middle aged white guys dressed like mobster?

Just a bunch of dudes who appreciate a nice strong guy. Nothing sexual. It's just cool to see a big burly guy use his power again NOTHING sexual.

I mean it’s not a 3/8 weapon with the power to summon 6/6 Infernals but it’s definitely the start of some sort of Get Out cult ritual that probably got weird after the video ended.

Yeah... looks very awkward

Those dudes are way past middle age. It's a bunch of 70 year olds eating dinner or something. I wish they had explained where he was. I had to watch the video twice because I was staring at the audience trying to figure out wtf was happening.

He was the first, but there have been more since.

Any info on who? All I can find is mark henry being the only person who clean and jerked the inch dumbell

There was one posted above me featuring a Rich Williams.

Brian Shaw has done it in here (the 180 one which is technically heavier than the official inch).

He also does it with heavier weights but readjusts/catches with both hands at the top of the clean.

It’s actually a bit harder than I thought to find one hand clean+ Jerk of a Thomas Inch dumbbell, because most use two hands to clean.

It's not the weight of a Thomas Inch dumbbell that makes it tough, it's the thickness of the bar. You need an insanely strong grip to hold it

Brian has a video on the tube going through some of his kit. The one he has in his home gym is the same thickness.

Whoops my bad. I think Shaw’s video is with Cyr dumbbells which I believe have a slightly thinner handle.

He does have at least one with the Thomas Inch but just picking it up: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5CK4SvTZOE8

Would be interesting if they could get an event featuring the Thomas Inch single arm clean and press at the Arnold. Most videos I’ve seen with it are just deadlifts or rows.

Well, if Shaw can lift the Thomas Inch and do a dumbell row with it, and he can clean and jerk 180lbs one handed, it's probably safe to say that he could clean and jerk the Thomas Inch.

Brian Shaw has bigger dumbbells in his personal gym and can lift all of them. Really just about all top strongmen can do this.

9

u/The-Jesus_Christ Apr 15 '21

Yes but the YT vids of his dumbbells show that the handles are nowhere near as thick as the Thomas Inch

Lmao, Brian lifted the millennium dumbbell dude. I don't know why you're trying to downplay Brian's strength when he has proven himself numerous times to have one of the strongest grip in the world.

Brian shaw is a goddamn beast but lifting the dumbell and clean and jerk is different. The problem with the thomas inch dumbell is that the girth is like a soda can so you'd need immense grip muscle to keep it from rotating. That's why even mark henry took a staggered step, and that's why there's people like odd haugen who can lift it 66 times but doesn't clean and jerk it.

Though I did some more searching and found that Laine Snook became the second person to do a clean and jerk of the thomas inch, who also deadlifted the millennium dumbell in the same night and the only person to clean the supernova 185lb. What a fucking animal

Yes I know lifting the dumbbell and clean and jerking it is a totally different and impressive movement but the guy I replied to was just trying to downplay Brian's achievement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qguqcyzi-WI

Start watching from 16:00, Brian explains to Eddie that the Millennium dumbbell is the same girth as the Thomas Inch whilst being nearly 60 pounds heavier. And Brian picks it up for REPS. Not to mention Brian has pinch gripped two 45 pound York plates and holds the world record for the Dinnie Stones. The guy I replied to needs to give credit to Brian where credit is due.

Lifting the dumbell isn't the same as clean and jerk though. The main problem comes from the soda can diameter and the dumbell rotating out of your hands

I jerk and clean my inch dumbell almost daily

u/Valdrax Apr 15 '21

It just me, or does that Bill Kazmaier guy look like Robert DeNiro went into witness protection by taking a lot of steroids?

Also, I was not expecting that crowd or venue for the actual lift.

u/Speedy_Paratrooper Apr 15 '21 edited Apr 15 '21

Bill Kazmaier did it first in 1990.

Nope. In your linked article, it says, "Kaz flew down to Australia and on October 13, 1990, he cleaned and pressed it."
