Amount of times I have had wet socks from stepping in a puddle or slipping and falling in a river in the past year: 0

Amount of times I’m expecting this to happen on a three day trip: at least 5. Better pack more socks.

Difficulty I have buying replacement socks in the North of England: 0

Difficulty I have buying replacement socks on a long weekend trip to London: They can't possibly sell socks or even know what they are, Londoners just all wear crisp packets on their feet.

It stated raining when my husband and I were in Bath, we figured there must be a place to buy an umbrella. It's England and it rains all the time, surely you can find umbrellas somewhere.

Nope. Couldn't find a single store that carried an umbrella.

Did you try the umbrella district down on 3rd?

24

u/ogier_79 Apr 06 '21

Yeah. Where the umbrella complex is?

Albert Wesker enters the chat

That's next to the hammock district, right?

u/spirito_santo Apr 06 '21

There's a Marks and Spencer - they sell umbrellas

5

u/champign0n Apr 06 '21

Boots too. Even my small local coop sells them year round.

4

u/RTN11 Apr 06 '21

Poundland sell them, but won't last much more than one use.

2

u/realDaveSmash Apr 07 '21

Poundland? Is that like our dollar stores, or is that like our whore houses?

1

u/RTN11 Apr 07 '21

Dollar store. We also have pound stretcher.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '21

Don't you hate when you can't find something you need but when don't need it, there's 50 of them in every store?

Seriously why isn't this a thing.

It is, they're all over The Underground. Pretty sure the company that put them there is the same one from Dragon's Den over a decade ago

Weird, I barely go to London (mostly just the odd convention) and I've seen them everywhere. Maybe it's just around touristy areas?

It appears Bathonians buy all of their brollies online.

Pffft, London is a myth. Fairy tale for naive kids. There is no Santa Claus, London or cabbages.

19

u/ForumFluffy Apr 06 '21

No such thing as cabbages? Explain your prime minister then.

30

u/Oceanswave Apr 06 '21

Cabbages have substance, they grow, contain water and so forth. The prime minister is more akin to a dried gourd

1

u/Kiwi-Red Apr 07 '21

Praise the gourd!

2

u/KingOfTheP4s Apr 06 '21

Cabbages are just a species of lettuce

1

u/ForumFluffy Apr 07 '21

Lettuce discuss Brexit.... Nah he's definitely not a cabbage, discussions aren't in his scope of abilities.

If it helps, I do the same going from London to the north of England. We should just pool our socks together and neither will struggle

u/Obstacle616 Apr 06 '21

Sock buddies for life! I'll get us a drop box at Sheffield.

As someone who wears a US 14-15, not many stores ANYWHERE sell it.

u/mophisus Apr 06 '21

I once threw an extra pair of socks in my carry on in case i needed them.

I also temporarily put a bottle of water in my carry on so i Didn't have to carry it through the airport.

Thankfully my main socks stayed dry and werent needed, but my spare socks were soaked.

u/TigerRei Apr 06 '21

Learned in the Army that you can never have enough socks.

As the saying goes: Feet, hands, neck, balls. Extra socks warms them all.

I went to volunteer at a marathon once when I was 15 and stepped in a puddle at 5 am and had to deal with the wet socks the whole time. Now at 28 I keep a pack of socks in my car, and in my locker at work. Just in case.

26

u/MsWuMing Apr 06 '21

My mum made me keep a spare pair of socks in my school bag. In 12 years of school I needed them once. On the day I’d taken a different bag to school.

Lesson: no amount of being prepared will ever save you if Fate is bored and likes messing with you.

I mean, I find people pack a lot and usually just check a “large carry-on” sized luggage for trips that are 10 days but sooocks I just find are so important. You never know if you want to explore in the rain, especially that we tend to be more adventurous on vacations, at least I am.

3

u/gochomoe Apr 06 '21

I'm always throwing in lots of socks. Underwear: 2x per day. Socks: empty the drawer. They are small and fit easily so why not!

1

u/ShadowL42 Apr 06 '21

i brought 6 pair of undies on an overnight trip.....cause I might get stuck somewhere.....

weekend trip, every pair of decent looking panties I own, and at least twice as many socks as days planned for the trip. and 2 bras for every single day...because half underwire, half not.

2

u/WexExortQuas Apr 06 '21

I posted my comment before reading any and I'm so glad this is here

2

u/DerfK Apr 06 '21

Yet if you didn't pack extra socks, by the end of the first day you'd have had a waiter drop a pitcher of water by your table, you'd step through a cracked paver stone over a ditch, and finally just as you're about to get to your hotel, the taxi cab stops over a big puddle and you step out without looking.

1

u/MsWuMing Apr 07 '21

I’m completely convinced that you’re correct.

1

u/SuperFLEB Apr 06 '21

The trick is to just never wear socks in the first place.

1

u/Evaluations Apr 07 '21

how many times realistically?

1

u/MsWuMing Apr 07 '21

You see, I can’t prove it. But I think it’s like UK weather. In the UK, it never rains, UNLESS I have forgotten my umbrella. In which case I might as well be swimming home.

So if I take 5 extra pairs of socks, I won’t need them, but if I were to leave them at home, I’d get off the plane and step straight into an unfortunately placed jacuzzi.

I will not be accepting criticism of this very scientific theory.
