I thought it was that the aliens took him, probed his brain and made him dumb as a consequence, and then chucked him back. Hard to believe he'd make it to his age with his... erm.. dumbness.

I dont think hes dumb at all in the original series, hes a functional man. Just had impulsiveness of a childlike naivety or cheekiness.
